Smith, Boller struggle on first day

I know it's only the first day of passing camp, but it was hard on the eyes watching quarterbacks Kyle Boller and Troy Smith throw in practice. Smith had the better day, not because he looked good, but because Boller performed so poorly. Boller had several passes knocked down and underthrew and overthrew receivers.

Smith wasn't as erratic, but he had no touch either. Smith's lack of arm strength was clearly evident when he had to throw sideline passes to the far side of the field. The objective is to throw high and hard so that if the receiver doesn't catch the ball, it goes out of bounds. Smith threw several passes inside, and they would have been picked off and returned for touchdowns.

The good news is that it can only get better. Right?

Yes, it'll get better once Flacco hits camp.

Hmmm, totally different from the other reports. Someone is wrong.

I have given Kyle boller every benefit of the doubt since they destroyed his career by feeding him to the wolves his first year. But the time has come for me and the ravens to cut there ties. He has been given every chance to improve but he hasn't gotten any better in fact he has gotten worse. Bite the bullet ravens and release him so they can devote more time to the other 2 QB'S.

Hey Mike,

Jamison Hensley had an article today that made T. Smith sound like he had a great day. He even said he showed great touch on threading a 15 yard pass between two 2 defenders. You seem to leave the impression that he was average at best and should have been picked off a couple times. So what's up with the difference between you and Hensley?

Lack of arm strength from Smith, or lack of journalistic credibility from Preston?

They stink. I can't sit in the stands and defend Boller another year. Smith might be nice to have around as a change of pace guy but he will never be a decent starter.

This is why the Raven's took a QB in the first round of the draft and why they should have taken a second QB in the second or third round. Kyle Boller and Troy Smith "MUST" go or it will just be more of the same crap this year as has been the past few years.

Ummm....no...they WON'T get better. Boller DEFINITELY won't. Six years isn't enough to evaluate that guy? CUT HIM and sign a vet to keep the seat warm for Flacco or Smith (who I also have no confidence in). Enough already.

Interesting comment on Smith. Were you and Jamison Hensley watching the same practice. According to Jamison, Smith had a pretty good day. His coaches have praised his performance, overall, as well.

I talked to a friend there. He said Boller looked bad, Smith had good moments but looked Ok. Smith is prob the best option till Flacco comes in. I think the line will need to get better before anyone does well.

Can you not comment on shoulda didn't happen events? Report what happened. Boller was horrible, Smith had a better passing day.

Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!

You're always drinking the hatorade from the sidelines. Not sure why you made a career out of Baltimore Sports. You clearly hate our teams.

Sounds like Preston is bored and he is just trying to ruffle new feathers......some people will never be happy! It was the 1st day of passing camp and some folks are already talking like it is mid season. Boller is over and if the line does not improve then give it to Smith, so he can run. Let's Harbaugh a little time to make some decisions before folks like Preston start giving up the season. If you do not want to support this team then go write for the Washington Post.

I'm hearing different reports as well. The part about Boller seems to be accurate enough but EVERYTHING else I've heard about Smith leads me to believe there's something wrong here.

So the Sun puts out an article by the main beat writer that talks up Smith and says how well he played but the "expert" columnist writes a blog the saying he looked awful. I understand that these are not facts, but opinions. However, do these two guys talk to one another? Do the editors at the sun have any control over (or even read) this blog?

Look, does Smith have a strong arm or doesn't he???

Kyle Boller had his chance to shine when Mcnair got hurt. He blew the Patriot game and blew his whole career. Flacco and Smith should be the quarterbacks to lookout for. Smith has mobility and he has the heart to get better. Smith should be able the start with Flacco waiting in the back. We'll see the battle between QB's in the preseason!

Great to see a post from you Mike.

For those of you who do not know much about journalism, let me explain something, Jamison's article on Smith was more of a "feature". In case you have not read the Sun lately, they tend to do this from time to time during training camp or preseason in order to educate the readers on the current roster. Notice Jamison only mentioned the productive things Smith did in practice the other day since his article was about the maturation of Smith. Mentioning that Smith (still looking for a sarcastic nickname here) has 0 arm strengthh or that he can't throw out of bounds would have been counter productive to his article.

Since Mr Preston is a columnist and the founder of this blog, he is allowed a fair amount of objectivity when analysing players. As for Boller, I look for him to have a big year. He is in a new offense, his contract is up and he has two young guys pushing him. Look what these scenarious did for Derek Anderson and Drew Brees.

As an Ohio State fan I can tell you right now Smith has a strong arm. Before the draft he won the long throw competition for QB's, and Smith used to overthrow Ted Ginn - not easy to do. A guy who can throw the ball more than 60 yards down field can throw a 15 yard out - and I saw him throw those perfectly to Ginn and Gonzales his senior year. He has an arm.
