A backup for McGahee

Even with pressing needs on the offensive line and cornerback, the Ravens grabbed running back Ray Rice from Rutgers in the second round with the No. 55th pick overall. Rice is small (5-8, 199 pounds), but ran a 4.47 in the 40.

He was the rated the fifth-highest running back by Pro Football Weekly, ahead of East Carolina's Chris Johnson, who went in the first round, and Tulane's Matt Forte, who went higher in the second.

A little dissapointed in The Sun's coverage of the draft so far. Apparently there are 4 of you guys who write for the Ravens Central blog, and it is near the end of round 2, and you guys have written 3 small blogs. I guess I just expected better

The fat lady aint sung yet ...but she is on her last twinkie boys and girls ....time for Ozzie to go into a retirement home with Al davis....actually Al looks like he's on new and improved medication this year....Ozzie may be trying to take his title of most senile....sure hope Flacco and Rice can play corner......

Mike, You act suprised. They took the best player available. Why take a CB or O Lineman who's a reach and not worthy of that pick? It was a great pick considering how much McGahee get's hurt. We have plenty of 3rd picks to get a CB, OL, WR and beef up the defense.

a lil disappointed with our draft today.Flacco.Maybe ok,but Rice could be good.Jamal Lewis clone i guess. No CB,OL,WR,DE.I dont see to many blue chip guys coming in from day 2 that can replace any of the vets.Even Rolle.I hope im wrong. Why didnt we select an OL?????g

I love how some people are so down on Ozzie for not getting a corner immediately. Obviously, there's something that Ozzie & co. didn't like about the available corners at the time they picked. There's a lot to like about the two selections, not to mention our vast stockpile of picks for tomorrow (here's a hint rob - Ozzie is FAMOUS for getting quality players in these rounds, David Pittman notwithstanding).

I personally can't wait to see Flacco develop over the next couple of years. Just hope we don't have to rush him. Rice has the potential to be a monster producer for us. Time will tell, so lets give them at least a few months, instead of condemning them only a few hours after the picks are made.

ok, flacco at 18 was retarded! just think..mike jenkins from s. florida would be worth moving up...flacco? we could have gotten him at 26. ...disagreements?

ray rice? great pick. coming from a jerset guy watching him play. no character issues. unbelievable drive and heart! is compact with power and good speed like a jones-drew. why we traded?? 3 3rd rounders and 3 4ths.. .should have packaged 2 of those picks 2 get a desean jackson or smthn..idk, flacco is a stretch

Ozzie & company did the best they could with the options presented to us at every pick. Matt Ryan didnt fall to #8. The staff really saw something special in Joe Flacco and since they didnt agree to give up the asking price of the Rams for the #2 pick, they werent going to risk losing their second best QB. Dropping back in the first gave them an advantage in moving whereever was needed to take Flacco even if that meant not drafting one of the best CBs. By the time it was the Raven's second pick, the second tier of CBs had all gone so again Ozzie was not going to reach and decided to move back since the next tier of CBs would still be there in the late second and early third. Now with many picks in the 3rd and 4th rounds Ozzie could start drafting the best player available, and since Limas Sweed was just grabed by the Steelers, they assured our backup RB spot with Rice and this gives safety if Mcgahee goes down or needs a rest. The need positions didnt fall to the Ravens as they would have liked but they did the best that they could.

we passed on 1st round talent (granted doesnt always workout) for 6 players in the 3rd and 4th...betta hope 2 of them wrk out, plus can we even afford 2sign all of these players? great we havepicks, but these are things u hav 2 think about. igk rice anddesean jackson would have been nice...especially cause we lost sams....if we didnt draft rice i d grade the draftas an f.

all u doubters...just look at wat philly got4 trading their 1st rounder. thats value...just look!

OK that all makes sense but if they didnt release Musa Smith they would'nt need to replace him...... thus remain able to address a need not create another one and then have to fill it........

I would hardly call Rice the best player available. I agree w/ the notion of trading down for more picks to add depth to your team but this ridiculous. We could have picked up a solid DB or a WR to help with our anemic offense. Limas Sweed, DeSean Jackson and Malcolm Kelly were on the board. I dont know where our head was in round 2.

It's downright silly to gauge the success or failure of our draft now, when the Ravens have SIX picks coming in the 3rd and 4th rounds Sunday. Any team can make a splash by choosing an obvious stud in the first round, but teams are made or broken with quality selections in the subsequent rounds of the NFL draft.

No front-office enters the draft more prepared than the Ravens. Adalius Thomas? Bart Scott? Bet the farm no one heard of THOSE guys before they were taken in the 5th and 6th rounds.......hold your knee-jerk reactions until the draft is over.

It's really too bad that the management of the Ravens chooses to pay Mr. Newsome in the high 6 or perhaps even 7 figures, when experts who apparently know much better are available for consultation for so much less. If only Steve could identify "retarded" behavior that is the obvious product of someone senile, I'm sure we would have a much improved team. Get a life!

Most of you guys don't know what you're talking about as far as basking Ozzie. The man has set one of the highest standards in the league when it comes to drafting. What have you done? Flacco at 18 or 26 doesn't matter because he was the consensus 2 QB and was a MUST for us so you go get him. At that point, you can't know QBs will fall as far as Brohm and Henne did and who knows if that happens if Flacco stays on the board. As for corners, each of the top 4 guys were all labeled as having issues and none of them was a sure thing. Rice is an awesome pick and you should have seen it coming when he fell to us there. Musa and Anderson are gone which means we had no backup and now we have one of top backs in the draft and a high character guy to spell McGahee. I do think we should package some picks for Lito Sheppard, but no matter what, we'll do fine on Sunday and Ozzie will be proven right yet again.

Why did the Ravens trade out of the #7 position of the 2nd round down to the #56 position for a third round pick? Did we get another pick from Seattles 2nd round of 2009 or did I miss something

The Flacco pick at 18 may have been a bit early but we got the guy we needed. Why wait and get beat. There was a very good chance the Panthers would have taken him at 19. Rice was a great value pick and with 9 picks left there is plenty of depth available. No sense taking a CB early just to take one. Ozzie has a proven track record and I am excited to see what happens rounds 3-7. Hoping for that Haynos pick in the 6th or 7th.

Q:

"Maybe ok,but Rice could be good.Jamal Lewis clone i guess."

Rice is 199 lbs.; Jamal is 245 lbs.

Rice is a good pick. 2nd in rush yards last season . . . ya, you can't argue that pick at all.
