Newsome on Ryan
I spoke with Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome today, and he was very adamant about the team retaining Rex Ryan as defensive coordinator. As a matter of fact, he practically guaranteed it. There was some truth to Jim Fassel talking to Ryan about becoming Washington's defensive coordinator, but it never reached the serious stage.
For it to get to that point, the Redskins had to contact Newsome, and they never did. But Newsome did admit that the Bengals wanted to speak with Ryan about becoming their defensive coordinator weeks ago, but the Ravens denied them permission. There were no negotiations between the Ravens and Ryan today, but they will heat up soon.
"We're going to get something done, even if I have to meet with Ozzie myself without the agents or anyone else in the room," said Ryan.
Ryan said he doesn't know when he'll become a head coach, but he'll be ready when the opportunity comes.
"I've had people say, Rex, you'll become a head coach next year," said Ryan. "I say, sure, right. It's going to happen one day. It might be three years from now or five years from now, but when it happens, I'll be well-prepared."

Do not be surprised If Synder(Redskins) offers Ryan 2-2.5 millon a year to be the DC of the Redskins. I do not see the Ravens paying Ryan the same amount as Harbaugh Is making If Rex Ryan Is going to be the DC this organization needs to get It done and move on. If Harbaugh and Ryan are comfortable with how things happened then we as fans and media have no choice but to be happy.

I think Rex Ryan didn't land a head coaching job this year because he has been unfairly tarnished with the Ravens lack of "discipline" this past season. I say unfairly, because it is the head coach (Billick) who sets the overall tone for a team, not the coordinators. Billick played favorites with certain players too often, didn't put enough emphasis on teaching the fundamentals (especially lacking on offense) and didn't demand a committment to excellence from his players or coaches.
The defensive players have always played hard for Ryan, he has an excellent understanding of what it takes to have a successful defense and he obviously works as hard as any coach in the NFL. I think it would be beneficial for both the Ravens and Ryan for him to be back as the Ravens D Coordinator in 2008. The Ravens get one of the premier D coordinators in the league and Ryan gets to prove that he was not the problem, but rather Billick.

How can the Redskins offer Ryan anything unless the Ravens grant permission??? Am I missing something?

Here is a thought: maybe Rex will be hired back, but with a different title: Defensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach.
They are going to have to give him a raise anyway. And maybe his football mind can benefit the ravens in ways other than defense.
With that title, it will also look good on his resume, since it appears he's the ravens DC only on a year-to-year basis.

If an undisciplined defense gets you a top 5 finsh every year I'm all for it.....cant have everythng but success is fine.

It's my understanding that Ryan is still technically under contract and therefore can't be a DC anywhere else. Lateral moves are prohibited in the NFL unless the two teams come to some kind of agreement.

Given what Rex Ryan has gone thru over the past few weeks, I think he has been a class act. His demeanor will not be overlooked when his time comes.
I honestly thought he would pout like most others would and take the "I'll show'em" attitude. He didn't and instead took the high road. He certainly has won over my respect. I'm looking forward to seeing him on the sideline next season.
I think all of us stand to learn something from Rex. We've all been in job situations where we were not the "chosen one". Rex has shown us how to behave in such situations. Go Rex...

Rich A you are on the money about this whole process having been unfair to Rex Ryan. And it should be recognized that we dont have him coaching against us in our own division. We got more breaks than we probably deserve.

The Redskins can offer to pay Rex $10 million a year, but it doesnt make a difference since he is under contract to the Ravens. So Danny boy can find another D coordinator for the Deadskins!

I agree with Doug, hire Rex back as DC/AHC. Come on people who can deny that HC: Harbaugh, OC: Cameron, DC/AHC: Ryan would be one hell of an intriguing coaching staff for next season?

It has become very apparent that Mr steve the successful owner of the ravens has become more reliant on Dick cass the account and less dependent on ozzie the GM.While i am pleased that they hired John h for the head coaching job , you can bet your last dollar that this was not ozzie's hire. he is way to old school for that i and it was apparent that he wanted Marty. Rex Ryan has just been caught in the middle of this power struggle, and for all of you naive ravens fans that don't think there is a problem with in the confines of the castle then you all are bigger idiots then i thought.Rex might still get hired but don't think for one minute that they aren't still waying all there options, Like williams of the redskins, riveria, of the chargers etc etc. If they weren't doing that he would have already been hired. And for all of you people that think cameron was John H 's hire then you are again kidding yourself. He wanted Pat surmur the QB coach of the eagles and they told him that he will have cameron instead. While i think cameron is a good hire this again indicates that there are disturbing smoke signals rising above that so called Castle out there on the HIll in ownings Mill.s After stating all these facts with which i am 100% confident of .the saddest part of all of this is the similarity that this organiztion has come to becoming just like the orioles.with Peter A relying on Joe Foss the accountant and not his baseball people. Wake up Steve before it's to late/

They don't have to give him anything but the money they already agreed to, but may look to give him a raise and an extension at the same time. Otherwise he walks after next year, but I think he will get a HC job if we have a top 5 defense again and make the playoffs.

its a real shame that it takes over a day to get your comments posted . by the time it does get posted another topic to discuss comes up.I really don't know why i get myself so frustrated with all this stuff in the first place,

Everybody calm down. There was no way Rex was going to the redskins. He still has another year as DC for the Ravens and will likely get an extension/raise. The reason why they havent signed Rex to an extensiuon yet is because, one they dont have to because hes already under contract and two Ozzie Newsome is scouting tons of college players at the senior bowl. All the other DC options would just be a downgrade for the Ravens and Rex has too much pride to let the hiring of John H effect him running his defense. This is going to be one of the best coaching staffs in football....top 5 defense and an offense that can only improve. Give me a break people...take a deep breathe, the Ravens will be just fine.

Rex Ryan is not a victim of the lack of discipline for his defense this year. Rex is a victim of Ozzie great drafting on the defensive side of the ball and the fact that this defense was great before Rex got here and it will be great after Rex leaves. This defense has been great through Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan and Rex Ryan. Let us not get carried away here.

I had considered that adding the AHC to Rex's DC title would be another team's ploy to wrestle him away without having to get permission. That would be a promotion, not a latteral move (right?). Thereby, the NFL rule would not apply (please correct me if I'm wrong)...
That being said, I don't see the organization voluntarily doing this as it may give the perception that our rookie HC is not the controlling force they want him to be seen as: The Man In Charge.
I don't think "The Biscz" and Co. want to send that message right out the gate (be it true, or not...).

Bob,
Where do you get all of these "facts"? How the Hell do you know that Harbaugh wanted Pat Shurmer for O.C.?The simple answer is you don't. So don't act like you're some kind of inside informant, when in reality you are nothing.
P.S., Learn how to type the English language, learn punctuation and sentence structure, then come back and post something.

The Ravens need to make the announcement that Rex Is coming back already this topic Is old. The secret Is no secret he will be John Harbaugh's DC this coming season. Mike Smith In Atlanta Is filling his staff out already and we just have an OC being named. Also the Redskins have a new DC and OC and Rex is staying LETS MOVE FORWARD FOLKS.

I just wanna know whats going to happen when a Raven's player dress's down a coach (Camerom--Porter- Miami) In front of the team and the coach does not reply or demand a repercussion for the Incident? Whos going to help him since he was unable to do this for himself at the time this supposedly happened?
Posted by: Joe Grover | January 28, 2008 10:53 AM
Bob L, have you seen some of the other hires around the league? Well, let's see, Parcells hired the quarterback coach, and the defensive coordinator before he hired the head coach. The has happened in Washington, Oakland and other teams as well. I am sure the new head coach had something to say about the offensive coordinator but isn't it about time someone other than the head coach in this organization was responsible for the offense? I believe the head coach, in most organizations, may be consulted; but may not be the last word on the hiring of coaches under him. Also, the Eagles may not have given the Ravens permission to speak with their coordinator. Give this staff time before everyone starts making comments about the offense or overall team will be next year.

I have'n been on the wb site since the ravens season ended! But i just need to say! There should not be any debate about th QB positon! You can take your choice on Kyle or Steve! but Troy Smith!! You know the one every beat writer & news media keep doubting and saying he's not a QB! ATTN: Like you do some of these others QB who's been in the league and hasn't produce and you still give them the chance to play, especially when they have at least 16 intcept for the season and still in the starting lineup. Troy is A Top notch QB and like you do the others let him play!! And quit using his height as an excuse! I've seen 6"3 and above that are STIFF.. I bet there are not over six QB in the league that has a stronger arm then Troy...And the only person i can think of right off the bat is Jamarcus Russell...Troy has speet and great vision & makes good decision. And his passes are money in the bank! Not throws that the wide receiver has to make, to make the QB look good! I guess if Troy was Brady Quinn I guess you would be saying there's are starting QB for 2008! So if you're not going to say anything good about Troy (or the QB) then just don't say anything! In the few gms play i think he show what he can do!!
