Where's Ray?
The question among local reporters these days is: "Where's Ray?"
Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis has been curiously absent for the second straight week when players talk to the local media. After Sunday's 21-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Lewis fielded just one question, saying, "Bottom line, this team has to play better." He then left.
There's no question that Lewis will be remembered as an influential leader and one of the best middle linebackers in the game. But Lewis has a tendency to avoid talking to the media when the Ravens lose. It was the same way back in 2005 when the Ravens went 6-10. Lewis hates to lose and takes it personally. I understand that and even respect that. But there's an entire fan base that wants to know what Ray Lewis thinks about the team.
Plus, if Lewis can spend two hours talking on his weekly radio show, why can't he give the local media three minutes of his time? Other players -- Willis McGahee, Derrick Mason, Terrell Suggs and Bart Scott -- answer questions every week, no matter if the Ravens are on a winning streak or a losing one.
But if you went up to Ray Lewis' locker on Wednesday and Thursday, no one was around. Where's Ray?

Comments
Why should Ray Lewis talk anyway? There is no time for talking only time for winning. He probably feels that way and thats the way it should be.

"An entire fan base that wants to know"? I'm a fan and don't want to know - what good does that do? Yes, Ray is a Sports Writer's dream when he forgets the "team concept" and starts pointing fingers, but I personally LOVE that he has shut up. Hopefully now he can be a true leader and try to do what it takes inside the locker room rather then airing dirty laundry outside of it.

Jamison - I hate to demean your job in any way, but I could care less whether Ray ever spoke to the media again in his life. He shows up EVERY WEEK and plays his tail off on Sundays and that is the only thing that really matters to me as a fan. If you watch the Ravens Wired segments on MASN, you see that even when he is not wired, Ray is the pulse of this team and keeps them going. To be honest, Ray tends to create controversy when he speaks so the less said, the better. Most of what these guys say (and all of what Brian Billick says) is BS. They are rarely honest and usually just trying to be politically correct so who cares what they say during the week.

Personally, I think its smart of him to avoid the media. He's obviously a very passionate guy, and he doesn't shy away from the truth. The problem is, you can get in a lot of hot water when you speak your mind to the media. What is there to gain by telling reporters you're frustrated? The chance to be analyzed by a thousand people who can't do anything to help your situation?
It's better to keep your mouth shut, and keep it in-house. Besides, not talking to the media tells everything there is to tell anyways.

In Atlanta, our lasting memory of Ray Lewis is seeing him in his orange jump suit under arrest for being involved in a murder and lying to police. He expressed little remorse to our community and copped a plea when it became apparant he could go to jail. Ray seems more focused on the notion that the Lord put him on earth so he could be the baddest brother on the planet. Regarding his availability to interviews, I have never ever learned anything of value by listing to any athelete or coach respond to any reporter. It's endless blather of generalizations and trite sports talk ( we gotta take it to the next level!) for the reporters who are required to include quotes for their articles. Ray really needs to get over himself, stop pouting and realize he's not the head coach yet.

Maybe if you guys paid him and made an effort to advertise for his restaurant, he'd be able to spare 3 minutes of his time...

Ray is a winner, he has such a passion for winning that he works all year round for this time of year. He is frustrated. There is no reason for him to speak, because it could be detrimental. The defense has been excellent, the offense needs to come out and just try to have some fun, and not think so much.
Btw, Billicks comment regarding McNair shows what type of class he has. McNair deserves much better from the fans. The guy has taken a beating from opponents, and led us to a 13-3 record last year. He also has had a remarkable career. Give the guy a break and show some respect.
Fans here are pathetic and are clueless. You are not going to win every year, and this O line has been the problem, penalties and turnovers... that is why we are losing. Billick realizes the talent he has on offense. However, i will say that not running the ball on the one yard line vs. cincy week 1 and in buffalo were just horrible calls, and cost us 2 wins.
we can beat any team in the nfl and we can lose to any team.
DONT BE SURPRISED IF WE TROUNCE THE PATRIOTS, IT WILL BE OUR SUPERBOWL, AND EVERYONE SHOULD BE HEALTHY.
THE CROWD WILL BE PUMPED AND SO WILL THE PLAYERS.

RAY IS RAY - HE IS THERE ON SUNDAY AND THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. HE IS THE LEADER.

For Pete's sake, when he talks he gets criticized, when he doesn't talk, he gets criticized - what does he have to do to make some people happy? All he's done since he got here is play his heart out every week for this team. It's the only way he knows how and he leaves it all on the field, and he's as passionate about winning as they come. Occasionally he celebrates a big hit or play, and the fans who should be thanking the football gods for giving us a Hall of Famer like this whine. "Oh no, he's showboating again"
GET OVER YOURSELVES!
It's a part of who Ray Lewis is, we've been lucky to have had a player of his caliber stay for an entire career - in this day and age of free agency, mind you - play in Baltimore. He'll only be here another year or so, three tops. Can we just agree that all he wants is what you and I want - to win as a Baltimore Raven and bring home another Lombardi Trophy? He hates to see this team play poorly and it hurts him MORE than it hurts any of us "fans." I grew up learning who the best QB of all time was - the Golden Arm, Johnny Unitas. For me, the greatest defensive force I ever saw in his prime was Ray. Sideline to sideline, all day.

Dave has this one right. If he were to talk to the media and answer the questions truthfully, more fans would be ranting about how he needs to do less talking and focus more on the games. Now, he doesn't make the same mistake of causing a stir with his words in the media and we have the beginning of this entry of the blog which I now feel bad about wasting my time with.

Ray is one of the best defensive linebackers in the NFL. He doesn't have to speak to the media he's wrong if he speak and he's wrong if he doesn't speak can't win for lossing. Go Ray
