Referee Pete Morelli explains controversial decision in Ravens game
A post-game transcript of the interview with referee Pete Morelli concerning the controversial ending of Sunday’s 33-30 overtime loss to the Cleveland Browns.
On the initial field goal being ruled no good:
“It was a ruling by one of the officials, not by me. One of the officials signaled incomplete, no good."
On the discussion among the officials:
“The other official informed me that the ball hit the back of the extension of the goal post, which is the backside of it, which is an object beyond the goal post. And, in discussion with the three of us, we have to figure out what the ruling was, whether the ball hit the bar beyond the extension or not.”
On whether he received help from the replay booth:
“No, no help from replay. I did not go under the hood or use replay at all.”
On how the discussion between the three officials -- the two underneath the goal post and the referee -- transpired:
“Basically, you have to trust one of the decisions of what actually happened on the play. One was very emphatic that the ball hit the extension and came back across which in Rule 11, Section 5C [says] ‘the entire ball must pass through the goal in case of wind or other forces cause it to return through the goal. It must have struck the ground or some object.’ And that object was that extension on the back. We determined that was what it struck. Therefore, it made the field goal good.”

Baloney. Yeah the kick was good, but Morelli definitely grabbed a headset from someone and went under the hood.
It's great that he can cite the rule which makes the field goal good, but I wish he would also cite the rule that makes the play unreviewable.

There you have it, Dundalk fans!
There's no conspiracy here. You guys lost and you suck.
Bye bye

Before one official signalled no good, the other one, who Morelli claims was so emphatic about the ball hitting the support, looked right at the one who signalled no good and said nothing to him. When the "no good" signal was given, he still said nothing. I don't understand how Morelli could "determine it was struck" after talking to someone upstairs but couldn't determine that beforehand. If they knew it hit the support, why didn't they say so before calling upstairs? And if that ref was so "emphatic" about it, why didn't he say anything when they signalled "no good?" It's obvious that the person on the other end of the headset told them what happened and Morelli concocted this business about one ref seeing it hit the support in order to get around the fact that they weren't allowed to review it. The right call was made, but that doesn't change the fact that you just can't change or alter rules and procedures in the middle of a game because you think it's the fair thing to do.

"I did not go under the hood or use replay at all". but he talked to someone in the booth who did. in my book, that's using replay.

The story Mr. Morelli tells us is not worth the time it takes reading it.
1. One official, then the other signaled "no good"
2. Mr. Morelli DID go under the hood
3. He didn't say a word or whistled, therefore the Ravens went running off the field. Imagine the emotional drain out that needed to be recharged after being in the locker room. This alone is a significant losing factor right there
4. The fact that Morelli didn't say a word for 5 minutes is not officiating but rather lack of command and authority and lack of control.
5. Browns' coach ran immediately after the kick and began shaking hands with Ravens players on his way to Billick
6. A rule is the same for all. The referee doesn't have the option to review the nonrenewable, nor can he stall time without announcing what he intends to do, let the game fall apart only to reverse a call that could not be reversed
7. To all the "righteous" people, including Marc Viviano, The Bulldog and Mr. Russell who was so concerned of winning the game because of a referee mistake, I'd like to point out that regulations and rules go both ways. How many times have the Ravens had to accept a hostile or bad ruling although the referee's mistake was obvious and visible, just because IT WAS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR REVIEW or COULDN'T BE CHALLENGED.
Is there anyone that really thinks that if it would have been the other way Browns coach would have told the press and the NFL that they won the game based on a referee's mistake, therefore he will ask the NFL to consider it a lose for the Browns and a win for the Ravens? give me a break !!!
An last but not least, is there anybody that believes that the referee would have done what he allowed himself with the Ravens if the same situation would have occurred with the Patriots? No, it's not the conspiracy theory I'm talking about, but the underlaying fear most of the referees have from certain coaches and owners. Obviously Brian Billick is not one of them, and it is sometime costly.
So bottom line, I would have taken the win as is, because as everybody keeps chanting, "it is what it is". The players didn't make the rules, neither did we.

The referree should be fired for lying. How many thousands in the stands and on tv saw him put on headphones and go under the hood? I did. Yes, the field goal was good, but the call was "no good" and the play was not reviewable. Not reviewable includes the headset, you simply cannot do that under the NFL's rules. So, Commissioner Goodell, you should at the least be firing the referee, and at best, you should be giving the Brown Stains the Loss. For years now, why has the officiating sucked so bad?

The field goal should have counted and the referees did the right thing by making sure it was the correct call. It's time to stop whining. How about instead of complaining, Billick goes out there and has his team make a play to stop the Browns??

Like all NFL teams the Ravens have benefited from bad calls and won games. They also have lost games to bad calls like all NFL teams.
In this case the right call was made the ball had gone thru. The real reason for the outcry is the poor record the Ravens have.

When obvious discrepancies arise in the game, the booth should always make the last call due to the camera angles they now have at there disposal. Sometimes we win sometimes we lose. Get use to the losing for this year. Man who's team has lost there way. Here's hoping for a top 5 Draft pick and Marty getting to do the due !!!!!!!!!

Okay I am from Cleveland and flew down to the game... I mean basically you Baltimore fans want to steal something else from us Cleveland Browns Fans... It was the right call face it and we won.... Have fun going 6-10 this year

Brian Billick is an obnoxious crybaby. Let him protest the call. The fieldgoal was good, any way you look at it. Now you know how it feels to have a play reviewed and reversed after another play has already been run, or the game delcared over.

sam elrom, your response is insane, and withno foundation... he didn't go into the booth... why perpetuate this myth... they followed an appropriate procedure, how do you know that the one official never said anything... were you there...because you could not tell from the replay on tv if the ref said anything or not... and i have HD... IF you were at the game, you couldn't tell either... come on ...get over it... you were beaten fairly... maybe look at your offense, defense, special teams, and ultimately your coaching decisions....

Wow, it's amazing a team with Ray Lewis on it, the self-proclaimed mad man gets emotionally drained after a football game and can't get motivated again. How much do these guys make? Let's face it, the kick was good, the replay is very clear. By the way, NFL can anyone in your over paid office explain way a field goal is not reviewable? Especially since so many decided the outcome of games.

All of you Raven fans lamenting the field goal are just a bunch of cry babies. Replay or no replay, the kick was clearly good. Show some class and get over it. The Ravens used to win fair and square by playing the game well. You were proud of them and rightly so. Now you are reduced to tears that you didn't win a game because the officials DIDN'T rob the team that should have won. Pretty sad state of affairs in Baltimore these days......

You know I'm really tired of the Ravens fans thinking that they've been cheated and they've been the victims of bad luck. Did Morelli put on a headset? Yes, but he never went under the hood and he did not look at a replay. They told him it was not reviewable. They discussed it as they should and came to the correct decision. The fact is that there is no bigger whiner among the coaching ranks than Brian Billick. He thinks everyone is out to get him. The truth of the matter is that the Ravens need a new head coach. He is supposed to be this "Offensive Genius", but yet his teams haven't been able to score since he became head coach. If I had the weapons he had in Minnesota, I would be a head coach today as well.
The Browns have had more bad luck than when it comes to these types of things and it is about time they got one call to go their way. Should I remind everyone of "The Drive", "The Fumble", "Red Right 88", Bottlegate, and the one you all should know well (on both ends), having your team stolen out from under you?
Could this have been handled in a better fashion by the referess? Absolutely. Did they get the call right? Absolutely.

Wah-wah-wah! That anyone would argue against the refs making the RIGHT call is pathetic. Instead, why don’t you argue about why Ngata wasn’t ejected for his cheap shot on Browns’ tackle Joe Thomas. The 51 yard field goal tied the game, it didn't win it. But it took the Browns just 10 plays in OT to march down the field for the game-clinching kick. Cleveland deserved to win; Baltimore deserved to lose. Each team got what it deserved. Quit your whining!

ravens fans what to win the game on a call. fact of the matter is the kick was good. browns won the game on the field

I'm waiting for someone to say "the right thing to do is stop complaining and say congrats to Dawson for a great kick. Hey, it was a great football game between rivals. See you next year and the year after."

According to rule 5c, the ball has to hit the ground or some object, like an obstruction like a camera or something unnatural that impeded the path of the ball. That was not only a horrible late reversal of a non reversable call, the call was right in the first place. The ball carreened around the goal post but fell in the feild of play. If there was time on the clock and a guy in the endzone he would have caught it and ran it back.
The judjement of the guys standing underneath the goal post is the last word period. The discussion and everything that happened after was outside the rules of the NFL.
Billick should have had the lights tuned off and went home as soon as they offically looked at each other and gave the signal.
The play should have been reviewable, but it was not. The call may have been a bad one, but maybe not. The Ravens would not have left the feild though, if they did not make the call before conferring about the rule. The guy was on TV on camera looking at replays both under the hood and on the big screen in the stadium that some moron was running on a loop.
The very least Goddel should do is call the game a tie and strike the overtime period from the record. What he really should do is rule that the kick was no good because it came back into the feild of play because it hit the upright and bounced around. The call on the feild was no good, the game was over. Players were in the locker room, because the refs sent them there not the coach.
Does anyone really think the officials would have broken the rules, to correct a bad call for the Ravens? Billick has a file cabinet full of those, Sorry we screwed you letters Romeo should have to be waiting on, but not getting. The kick was no good. The call was right. Evrything else about the situation was really wrong.

The Browns do deserve credit for the way they played. They were incredible in getting the kick in question off. It is a great rivalry and I also look forward to the next game, but they did not win this one. The Refs helped them too much at the end. The kick did no go through enough to convince the only ones allowed to make the call.
