Looking in the mirror
The Ravens were looking in the mirror in the first half today against the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
They saw an offense that couldn’t score in the red zone and settled for three field goals.
They saw a defense that barely bent, let alone break.
They saw a 9-0 deficit staring them in the face as they trudged off the field at halftime.
How bad were the Ravens in the first half? They looked like the St. Louis Rams did at M&T Bank Stadium last Sunday, maybe worse.
They had the ball for a total of seven offensive plays in the first quarter.
They committed three – count ‘em three – offside penalties, including one on which cornerback Samari Rolle reached out and touched the Bills receiver across from him.
The second quarter didn’t get much better.
On one of Kyle Boller’s rare completions, tight end Quinn Sypniewski fumbled at the Ravens' 22. It set up the third field goal by Rian Lindell.
Just to show they weren’t through making dumb mistakes, the Ravens got called for another offside penalty.
The only thing that helped the Ravens was the fact that they were playing the Bills.
It didn’t help that left tackle Jonathan Ogden returned for his first action since the season opener in Cincinnati and linebacker Ray Lewis played despite speculation that he would sit until after the bye week.
Nor did it help that center Mike Flynn appeared to reinjure his knee, wide receiver Demetrius Williams left the game with an injury and Boller, well, played like Bollerre injure.
It added up to the first half shutout for the Bills.
And it didn't help that the fans, not to mention the Bills, were fired up for the return of running back Willis McGahee, who was held to 41 yards on 18 carries in the first half.
Some might think it’s time for the Ravens to look at themselves in the mirror.
But that’s exactly what they were doing in the first half today here at The Ralph.

Briab Billick's playcalling on crtitcal times of the game is killing us. Seriously folks....the genius is so friggin smart...that he figures he can out game plan everyone.....or maybe he still thinks that building a high powered offense is the true testament of his ineptitude. Whatever the case, dating back to the AFC divisional game...every crucial play to put points on the board of extend the game, Billick calls a pass. Today's game....2 And 1...yes, I can see going for a deep throw...but then on 3rd and 4th down...passing for one yard????? McGahee runs 19 times....6 yards per touch....and he doesn't get it once. Is this why we brought him here? Why can't Billick simply run the ball? It's worked for years. Got us a ring.....what gives? It just seems that he really isn't devoted to running and good defense.....

I'm sick of hearing about "one yard passed on 3rd and 8". Has anyone ever heard of a checkdown? Does anyone think that the head coach of an NFL team would call a play that wouldn't result in a first down?
I know everyone is frustrated about the offense and their lack of production, but lets flavor our criticism with a splash of common sense. It is ridiculous that we couldn't wipe the floor with a weak Bills team, but every game is going to be a struggle until this team discovers their offensive identity.

Billick = Loser. Too much talent, bad mangement. Too many excuses year after year. If he ran a division in my company I would have let him go two years ago. Other companies take the same personal and achieve results. He changes this manager or that employee or this system.....the results are always the same....come on Biscotti , your a business man, cut your loses.

Today's game in Buffalo is yet another testament to the ego of Brian Billick. While the team at large looked unfocused and lacked passion in their play, this game was not out of reach at the end. However, it has become incredibly apparent that after reestablishing himself as something of an "offensive genius" with the turn around last season, he has become obsessed again with building his old Vikings passing game. Only problem is that, first of all, Kyle Boller is not the answer to such a design. While he has played much better in recent memory, his play is reminiscent of a Trent Dilfer, not a Vinny Testaverde. As well, the game plan has become so apparent to opposing teams, there is absolutely no surprise when we throw the ball 37 times a game vs. 19 rushes. The team has to play better, but I would also point out that it may have been a bit premature to give this self-absorbed coach an extension last year.

Point Blank Steve needs to fire Brian Billick now. Enough of is words speaks louder than actions. His play callings are nothing but crap. Billick lack disciplines so does his players. Don't expect any surprise after the bye week if Billick is not fired. The team and the coaching staff will still be the same garbage we saw before going on bye week.

Just an utter train wreck. "Billick Ball" strikes again.Passing three times when you need a yard and the game is on the line. Penalties left right and centre. No fire on special teams. Hardly running the ball.
Compu Coach sacked his Offensive coordinator during the bye last year. Will he sack himself this year?

I don't know what to think - its just a heart breaker. I may be a little crazy but; it seems to me that the Ravens just play offense "scared". They are way to conservtive(IMHO).
golly run hard, throw the ball down the field if it gets intercepted it gets intercepted, watch the other teams that score lots of points - they play full out. These guys can't learn to get free unless they learn to get free - you do that by playing the game - geez your losing anyway - so go for it.

Brian Billick might be the worst coach in the history of the NFL to ever win a Super Bowl. I have maintained this since the year after they won it. He has produced a consistently inconsistent team, and an unstable, boring, predictable, generally ineffective offense since he has arrived in Baltimore.
The defense was good before he got here, and he has had little to do with the success on that side of the ball, but even the defensive dominance has started to fade as teams have learned that all they have to do is get rid of the ball quickly, and avoid turnovers, put up a 2 or 3 scores of any variety, and the impotent offense won't be able to make up the difference. This is a simple recipe for defeating the Ravens, and now the whole league knows it, from the Bills to the Browns, good thing we don't play the Raiders this season. We have the talent at every position except quarterback, but even that's no excuse because the Bills proved that you can beat a dominant defense with two rookie playmakers in the backfield. Sooner of later, the coach has to be held accountable, he's coasted for 7 years off of one Super Bowl victory, it's over now. Time is up, the thrill is gone, as should be Brian Billick. I plead with Ravens ownership to free us fans from the burden placed on us every single Sunday of viewing a talented team consistently underachieve. Brian Billick is the antithesis of a good NFL coach, his team is consistently unprepared to play football on Sunday, see him out the door.

This is crazy. The Bills game reminded me so much of the Colts playoff game. Offense lays an egg, fumbles in our own territory, beating ourselves, throwing away opportunities, defense plays well enough to win.
The only difference is we were playing the Bills not the Colts. I think that pretty much says everything right there.
..and why did Billick wait to put Ogden in??Is it becasue at that point he knew the Ravens better get their s% together or the playoffs were out of the question? If that is the case, why not start Ogden. Why wait until we were down??Makes zero sense.
The insertion of Ogden along with the gadget plays shows the Ravens are a desperate team.

Face it folks: they're just not that good this year. There's no one person that the blame can be pinned on. Billick made some bone-headed play calls, Boller overthrew at least a dozen passes, the defense looks old and tired...they just don't have it. I'll keep my fingers crossed that some miracle occurs during the bye week and they get their ducks in a row before Pittsburgh, but I'm not counting on it. And neither should you.
