Tuesday: Off the field

Wide receiver Derrick Mason was the most notable absence during the portion of today's practice open to the media. Mason practiced yesterday and was not thought to be an injury concern for Monday night's season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. Defensive tackle Atiyyah Ellison, a member of the practice squad, was also missing.

Offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden (hyperextended toe), free safety Ed Reed (bruised thigh), cornerback Samari Rolle (sprained ankle), wide receiver Mark Clayton (sprained ankle) and tight end Daniel Wilcox (sprained ankle) did practice. Both Reed and Clayton had their right ankles taped.

One of the funnier scenes of practice: defensive coordinator Rex Ryan booted at least six punts, which traveled about 20 to 30 yards per kick. The form left a lot to be desired, but the distance for a 44-year-old was respectable.

Cant wait to watch the game, which comes on at 4 PM here in LA. wow!

Maybe the reason Ellison wasn't there is that he was getting his bags packed to head out to San Francisco, since the 49ers grabbed him from the practice squad. Best of luck to him there.
