'Skins game
The Ravens have played two preseason games, and we're still wondering what kind of Ravens team will appear in 2007. Because most of the players return from last year's 13-3 team, we expect a good year, but most fans would like to see some assurances in the preseason. The game against the 'Skins is a big one. It's the third game of the preseason, and the last chance we'll get to see most of the regulars on the field before the opener against the Bengals. I know the Ravens still have one final preseason game left against the Falcons, but that game is a wash, like the first preseason game against the Eagles.
I expect the Ravens defense to re-establish itself against the 'Skins because it was so sloppy against the Giants last week. But I would like to see Steve McNair go down field more in this game, and get some zip on some of those passes. I'd like to see some acceleration out of running back Willis McGahee, which I haven't seen in training camp or preseason games. I want to see the Ravens score touchdowns, not field goals, just to make believe this season is going to be different than past ones. I'd also like to see second-year cornerback David Pittman play well because I don't think Corey Ivy is the answer if starter Samari Rolle gets hurt and has to miss time during the regular season.

Comments
I would love to see the Ravens actually do something different on offense like they seem to say every year. I have a great idea...when it's 3rd and 7 throw the damn ball at least 7 yards, not 2-3 yards and expect the receiver to wiggle out of 5 tackles. Go Ravens!

I couldn't have said it better myself Mr. Preston. Right about now, I'd take any good thing out of B.More after watching my O's turn in another season. I'm probably on the wrong blog but this hurts and I'm going to really need my Ravens to answer some of the comments you posed.
Peace From The Middle East!

Bill, you realize that the plays are designed to work right? And that the defense knows the down and distance too and just maybe they set their defense accordingly only leaving open the underneath stuff, right? And that maybe it's a safer play to check down to the underneath route, the only guy open, and see if he can make a play as opposed to throwing the ball to a guy who's double covered or otherwise blanketed thereby risking an interception. Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor and rather than turn the ball over, sometimes it's better to just punt the ball, play to our defense, and try and get better field position for the next series. I'm no Billick apologist, for sure, but you can't throw the ball 100 yards for a touchdown on every play.

I disagree with your statement that Corey Ivy is not the answer if Rolle goes down. I believe that if he is put in as the every day guy Ivy will do a great job. Ivy is tough and smart. Something that we desperately need.

I don't disagree with you at all.
However, is it true that you haven't seen ANY acceleration from McGahee in camp?

C'mon Geof, enough with the same ol' tired excuses for this LAME offense of ours. Watch other teams, even teams that shouldn't be on the same field as the Ravens, and they come up with more explosive and creative plays than we have yet to see in the Billick Era. BORING!

Willis will be fine, the offense will be good. The pre season does not matter, so you may not see it tonight, but they finally have balance. They will be beating good teams like they spanked Pittsburg last year.
Good post Geof. Billick sort of convinced me, but I still think he needs to take a few more chances. You can't always take the check down.

Geof - I hear you, but I agree with Bill. I am sick of 3rd and 7 and seeing the 3 yard pass. Kyle is especially adept at checking down quickly to making that play if you watch him. The quality offensive teams throw the ball to or past the yard markers on 3rd down, not short and pray for broken tackles or plays by the receivers. If the DB's/LB's are sitting on 7 yard routes, throw it behind them not in front of them so that if you get a play, it's first down. Willis will be fine. He is of the generation and mind set that only works hard when his meal is on the line - regular season. He's the starter walking into camp, has nothing to prove, and doesn't want to get hurt.

Tonight, for me, the biggest question remains on the O side of the ball. The running game and the ability of throw the intermediate andd long balls accuratly are still questions. The Redskins will really test the passing game too. I believe the running game will come as the O-line starters get into a rhythm. I do worry about McNair, even though I love what he brings to the huddle. The DB's are pretty talented into the bench, Sapp, Ivy, Prude and even Pittman. They all show me something as strong backups and our starters are tremendous mentors to the younger guys. Also lets not rush Gregg and Ngata back too soon, a sore bad knee can really slow them both down for the season, let them recover.
