Olson's departure not a surprise
The Ravens waived second-year quarterback Drew Olson, which is no big deal, and certainly not surprising. Olson was competing with Troy Smith, the rookie out of Ohio State, for the No. 3 quarterback job. Olson had outplayed Smith in the preseason, but it wasn't going to matter.
Olson was signed by the Ravens as a rookie free agent coming out in the 2006 draft. He came recommended to the Ravens by Rick Neuheisel, the team's current offensive coordinator. Smith was chosen in the fifth round by the Ravens in April and, of course, he won the Heisman. He also was picked by general manager Ozzie Newsome. So unless Olson dramatically outplayed Smith, he wasn't going to win the final quarterback spot.
Of course, Smith has the higher upside, and he is a lot more mobile than Olson, which you like in a No. 3 quarterback. But at least the contest is over, and Smith can get a lot more reps in the last preseason game now that Olson has been waived.

Dear Mr. Preston.
When was the last time that Billick picked a quarterback who worked out for the Ravens?

It's a real shame. I think that Olson has a pretty big upside. He's going to come back to bite us somewhere down the road.
And let's not forget that the Heisman Trophy does not guarantee a quarterback's success in the NFL.
How many Super Bowls and Pro Bowls have Vinny T been to? Then, answer that question for Kurt Warner.

Well, Olson had a QB rating of 107. Smith had a rating of 53. I guess Olson had to out-rate Smith something like 150 to -16?

Same old Ravens...another horrendous Quarterback decision...
Drew Olson, we felt was the only long term possibility for the team to discover some offense.
The young man has a rifle arm, pocket presence, excellent touch and a cool demeanor. Qualities the heir apparent Boller could never muster.
It did seem inevitable that ego man, Billick would never admit his mistake in time to redeem Olson, and make the only sensible cut of releasing Bolller.
Now we have an aged, an immature/ hyperactive and one way too small, contingent of QBs.
The opportunity has passed, and the Ravens loaded at every position, save QB, are for many years now destined to the same offensive mediocrity.
What an aberration

that really stinks, Troy smith is going to turn into another kyle boller. just meeting him at the first pre seasons games he already seemed to have an ego to him like he is better then everyone else. Kyle boller was the same way and look where he is now number 2 on his way out, hated by the entire state. Drew olson had something smith didn't, appriciation for being here. that is a shame and I have a feeling another good quarterback is gone from our team. I Think we've seen inthe past that Ozzie newsome can't pick quaterbacks so I feel we have another bust on our hands.

I hated to see Olsen waived. He has looked better and outplayed both Boller and Smith. Newsome does a great job drafting players but I think he has goofed on this one.

It was going to be a tough situation for Olson. I feel for the guy, who I think could be a capable back up one day. From what I've seen in the preseasono he's got a decent arm and good poise.
Does anyone see Smith realistically as a future starter? And in how many years? Is Boller going to be shown the door?

I can understand why they kept Smith. It only makes sense with him being drafted. My question is: Why didn't they keep Olson instead of Boller? I have backed Boller as much as anyone up until this year, but there comes a time. . . . I fear if McNair goes does, the Ravens become a .500 team from there on.

There seems to be a lot of sentiment for Olson, I agree. I like both him and Smith, but spending a 5th round pick made the difference. Smith absolutly has more in the legs, but I thought Olson looked a lot better as a passer and more in command. It is a shame we couldn't have kept them both for another year and let one emerge (as Olson has done in the 3 pre-season games). it'll kill me if Olson goes on to have a highly successful career elsewhere, any chance for the practice squad?

i have known drew my entire life, so my opinion is obviously biased but I can't believe that the ravens could cut him. Drew has more of the NFL QB intangibles needed to succeed than troy smith does. Drew has the arm and size but also has a high football IQ. He had three offensive coordinators in four years at UCLA with three different play books which shows he understands the game. What a mistake, boller is a bum and troy is to small but hell of an athlete. I hope drew returns home to San Fran and becomes a nagging reminder to all raven fans of what a mistake it was to let him go.

I can't understand why Kyle Boller is still wearing a Raven's uniform. He's been in he league how long and he still can't read plays or anything else for that matter. We should be keeping Olson and Smith both of these men out played Boller big time. What is going on in the front office? Why are we hanging on to Boller. Please end your pain and let him go, we need a winning backup quarterback and Boller is not the answer.

Mac, how can you be surprised at all? Despite Drew outplaying "Boy Troy" the entire preseason, training camp and every other organized team event, and demonstrating his physical tools in NFL Europa last year, he wasn't Ozzie's guy. Ozzie fell in love with "Boy Troy" as so many ex-GM's have for heisman winners in the past ( see Torrento, Ware, Wueffle, Weinke, White). Once a player has the love and respect by Ozzie, they are guranteed a place on the roster no matter how badly they play.
Besides, "Boy Troy" made an original contribution to the QB position in last years' title game: He invented the 12 step drop. It's kind of like doing a PHD, only without the intellect.
Whether Olson pans out in the NFL is something only time will tell. He clearly is as good as a lot of backup QB's in this league. But two years from now when "Boy Troy" is inventing the 21 step drop in the "Billick Ball" system, I myself will be thinking about what might have been with Olson.

I cant understand whythe Raven management give Rick Neuheisel the job of offensive coordinator and then not let him call the game or respect his choice of an excellant quarterback like Drew Olson. The Ravens will get nowhere until they learn to use Rick Neuheisels talent.

What is Drew doing now? Is he working out with a team or on a practice squad? Is he still playing football?
