Willis McGahee

With all of the hoopla -- and rightfully so -- surrounding Ravens quarterback Steve McNair's first  comments regarding the unusual DUI charges facing him in Tennessee, running back Willis McGahee seemed like almost an afterthought during the team's first minicamp today.

But McGahee's first workout open to the media went without a hitch. In fact, McGahee, whom the Ravens acquired from the Buffalo Bills in March for two draft picks in last month's draft and a third-round choice next year, looked good, catching a few passes in the flat on seven-on-seven drills and running smoothly.

McNair and McGahee were the highlights of today's session. Equally noteworthy were the absences of linebackers Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs, cornerbacks Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle, offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden, free safety Ed Reed, defensive end Trevor Pryce, defensive tackle Kelly Gregg, center Mike Flynn and running back Mike Anderson -- which didn't seem to bother coach Brian Billick.

"I'm very comfortable with the guys that we have here. I'm excited about that," he said. "And those that aren't here, I'm very comfortable knowing what they're going to be able to do when they get here."

Several players who underwent surgery during the offseason returned to the field. Return specialist B.J. Sams (ankle), fullback Justin Green (knee), defensive tackle Justin Bannan (toe) and running back Musa Smith (neck) all took part in drills. Linebacker Dan Cody, who opted to avoid surgery on his left knee, also practiced.

The team also signed two undrafted rookies -- quarterback Cullen Finnerty from Grand Valley State and safety Bobby Blackshire from Tulsa.

You have to love Brian Billick’s spin. He really should run for political office one day.

McGahee is going to be one of the best offseason acquisitions in the league, next to all the moves New England made of course. Remember a few years ago when the PATs acquired Cory Dillon? The Bengals thought he was washed up but Dillon immeditially stepped up and became a legitamate player again. I think McGahee is in for a big season.

As for camp attendance, when there is something I don’t understand at work or I’m behind on one of my assignments I sure as heck show up at the office to catch up. Sure these camps are “voluntary” ( the biggest oxymoron in the NFL), but after Egg Rolle mailed in all of last season the least he can do is show up for mini camps and attempt to regain some of his cornerback skills.

The McGahee signing is the most under appreciated offseason move in the NFL this year. A team goes 13-3 without a running game, then adds one of the best RB's in football? If that happens in Indy, Dallas or Boston, it dominates off-season talk and McGahee's face is plastered all over ESPN. Jamal was a good soldier but he was injured the past two years (should run better this year in Cleveland just because he's healthy) and was pretty one-dimensional. McGahee opens up so many possibilities, it's scary to think about what this offense can do in 2007.

It's hard to believe that the McGahee signing is under appreciated when almost every NFL analyst has the Ravens winning the AFC North this year.

I agree with Marc that the McGahee signing would have been more heralded if other teams had made the move, but we have to remember, the national perspective remains that the Ravens were a running team last year that had difficulty passing. Therefore, someone viewing the move from afar would not see this as an upgrade. The reality is that we have been held back by the running game for the last two years because of Jamal's injuries. Imagine last year's offense if Jamal was healthy or, more importantly, imagine it with McGahee. If one looks at the Raven’s offense objectively over the last two years, one has to come away with the conclusion that the running game was the problem and, more specifically, that Jamal was unable to move laterally and had lost his initial burst. Both of those attributes are what made him effective in prior years. I agree that, once his injuries are healed, he will be effective again, but it was not worth the risk that he may never fully recover, particularly considering that he was one dimensional and limited the creativity of the offensive coaches.

I believe the McGahee signing would have been more heralded had McGahee put up more impressive stats while in Buffalo. His YPC average wasn't much better than JL's; he's not known as a great pass catcher out of the backfield; he has a reputation for not hitting the holes, preferring instead to run laterally along the line of scrimmage, looking for an opening while often losing yards in the process; he no longer possessed "home run speed"; he's not known as a great blocker; he has a history of injuries; and there are some questions about his attitude. Given the other running backs that were available, and the price we paid to get McGahee, I can clearly understand the prevailing "wait and see" attitude with regard to Willis McGahee.

Yeah, McGahee's stats are not that impressive, especially the fact he hasnt broken many long runs and if you take away the two games against the Jets last year...he was pretty bad, BUT he should have a better offense around him and a better line. I think i could have run through some of the holes that were opened for Jamal last year that would close before he got to the line. What little film i have seen of McGahee he does not seem to hesitate and predict, if healthy, he is a 1300-1500 yard back...the only thing is he wears out during the game and seems to by the end of the season if you look at his stats...i'd love to see Musa wearing people down in the second half to spell McGahee a little.

first off mcgahee is not the best back in football or top ten. But has the potential to be he was probaly struggling more to do with his knee comin out of college, than his line in buffalo. I look for him to gain between 1,200-and 1,400 next year if he is fully healthy. durablity is a huge concern. He was knicked up in buffalo alot.

Personally I think McGahee was struggling because he was taking handoffs from one of the worst QuarterBacks in the NFL. Since Buffalo had an anemic passing game McGahee was facing eight and nine man fronts on almost every down. This will most likely not be the case in Baltimore. With a balanced passing attack, McGahee's ypc and overall total yards will most likely increase.

all I know is I'm looking forward to seeing what Willis can do. We will be in much better shape then last year going 13-3 and it's just another log that goes on the fire that 'burnin' up those Steeler fans, I love talking about the upcoming season with them!

The ravens just need to figure out who will take his spot rushing in goal line situations because his ribs were his biggest concern in buffalo and you dont want him taking a beating on the goal line.

I recently watched a Bills-Patriots game from last year on NFL Network Replay, and, if nothing else, McGahee will bring a lot of versatility to the Ravens attack. On the Bills' first 7 or 8 plays from scrimmage, he ran out of a single-back set, lined up with a fullback, stayed in to pass block, lined up in the backfield then moved into the slot, ran a pass pattern (and not just a swing pass)...in other words, he can stay on the field regardless of the situation. Plus he just seems to move better than any back we've had here since Priest Holmes. On one play he was running straight ahead, made a 90-degree left turn, ran towards the sidelines for 5 or 10 yards, then turned back up-field for a long gain. Standard stuff for most starting NFL running backs, but something we haven't seen here in quite a while -- when was the last time you saw a Ravens running back gain significant yards when he didn't just run straight ahead?

I also think that mcgahee is going to bounce back this year .

this offseason aquisition remind me a bit of the trevor pryce situation last year...

everybody was thinking he was wasted and too old but he deliver a heck of a season that we don't enough pay the respect he deserve...

Mcgahee is going to do the same this year, perforating the opposition, breaking a lots of tackle and winning some game (like price's blovking winning fieldgoal!!!!)

Go D, go ravens go! ang good luck willis i trust in you...
