Ray Lewis
While the Ravens are downplaying the fact that they aren't trying to replace Pro Bowl middle linebacker Ray Lewis, they would love to find a prospect. Out of respect, and rightfully so, the Ravens won't dare approach the subject about Lewis having little time left with the team. But at the end of the season, when the coaching staff had their evaluations, the lack of impact plays made by Lewis in 2006 was one of many subjects that were discussed. Lewis is still a good player and he has done a lot for the Ravens, but they really need to start searching for his successor. As the old saying goes, there is nothing wrong with preparing for war in time of peace. - Mike Preston

This might sound sarcastic, but it's not. My question is, what is wrong with Bart Scott as a replacement for Ray? In 2005 when he filled in for Ray he did a really good job and played phenomenally well last year. Is it his size? Its certainly not his speed. Why isn't he already the heir apparent?

lack of impact plays? what more do you want out of this guy? hes still the best MLB in the game, hands down. you all saw what happened to urlacher in those post season games last year... the last thing id worry about this draft is linebackers

Ozzie will do what is right for the organization. No doubts there.
Personally, I'd like to see Ray mentor some young LBs over the next 2-3 years and retire as a Raven

Mike-- I entirely agree. The Ravens would benefit immensely from a MLB prospect. As you've documented, the team excels at developing defensive talent, and it would be great to season a young linebacker behind #52 for a couple years. I hope that Ray would help in developing this player, much like Shannon Sharpe assisted Todd Heap.

You can’t approach Lewis for the simple fact of what he means to his teammates in the locker room and on the field. It is evident that Father Time is catching up to him, but you don’t want to disrupt the team chemistry. Most importantly the Ravens have to quietly look for his predecessor - a predecessor that Ray will embrace and a predecessor that will embrace living in Ray’s shadow. Remember Cal Ripken’s predecessor - Ryan Minor? The Ravens can’t afford to do the same thing – it must be done quietly and gradually.

One thing about Ray Ray..he still raises the level of play of his teammates. He deserves to retire as a Raven...I doubt he pulls a 'Cal Ripken' and stays so long that he becomes a burden to the organization.

Has anyone heard any news on Ogden??

Why look for a prospect now. maybe in the very last round we have a pick in, look for a line backer but right now our main focus should be on a FB, OT, and G. Everyone know we got more problems than worring about our Depth for LB or actually even CB. Bart scott or T. Suggs are more than able to fill ray rays position however Ray aint gone yet. Last year he still led the team in tackles and is still a very feared force around the league.

Ray Lewis is undoubtedly the face of the franchise and single handedly put the Ravens on the football map. In his prime he was the most dominant defensive player in the NFL and will some day have a bust in Canton. I just hope that he does the right thing and retires after this season. I still have vivid memories of "The Bus" running him over a few years ago. That's when I knew Ray Ray was on the downside of his career. He should play out the season and then bow out gracefully while he still can play at a decent level. Otherwise Ozzie will have to cut him and the outcry will be neagitive, meanwhile Ray will sign with a Cleveland-esque team for a ridiculous salary and end up playing special teams. Do the right thing Ray, while we still love you.

I'll take 32 year old Ray Lewis over Brian Urlacher any day. He's still got it.

It might be nice to grab a MLB in the draft but it is not a necessity. The ravens have been very good at plugging guys in ray's spot when he has been injured over the years. Hartwell, Scott, and Polley all come to mind.

Lack of impact plays??? The man had 164 tackles, 5 sacks, 2 interceptions, 8 pd.........that is "decent" to me!!
Also the two games Lewis missed last season the Ravens gave up 135 yards rushing per game and 3 rushing TD. The 14 games he played we only gave up 75 yards per game and 2 rushing TD. Preseton just bashs Ray no matter what.

The "lack of impact plays" comment was from the coaches -- who might know a little about this game. The unfortunate thing is (according to the Draftniks) this is not supposed to be a deep draft from a MLB/ILB standpoint. I think CIMBOLIC is right: look at Bart Scott as the replacement. I'm still more worried about the OLine and CB positions.

Ray did play against LT, LJ and Fast Willie and they went to pro bowl by the way they didnt score, and Jamal scored 3 TD against those teams and went to Cleveland

I love Ray so maybe I am biased here...but shouldn't the Ravens be more focused on fixing their offensive line before trying to find a replacement for a player who is still great? Granted...Ray isn't going to be playing forever but the Ravens have more pressing positions to deal with than MLB.

Don't forget there is still Mike Smith. Or is he not the answer?
