More Mason

Draft day is less than two weeks away, so there is going to be a lot of speculation about possible trades. Within the last several days, three or four teams have inquired about disgruntled Ravens receiver Derrick Mason. Mason basically said he wanted more action at the end of last season, and he suggested it might be time to move on. The Ravens should be able to at least get a third-round pick for Mason, but the Ravens are in a wait-and-see mode as far as trading him. This could go on right up to draft day. - Mike Preston

If we could get a very low 3rd rounder, it might make sense, but Mason is still very key to our receivers and overall passing game. However, I think theres no doubt that since Mason will not be that # featured reciever w/ Clayton & Demetrius around, he will have his episodes of disgruntlement & selfishness. I think it comes down to whether Billick either wants to put up with it or/and believes he can handle it effectively. But if for some odd reason these episodes are nonexistant or handled effecively, a third rounder does not match his value to this team.

A drawback to trading him is that we don't have a #2 receiver, then. I like Demitrius as a #3 right now. Unless we go and draft a Steve Smith or someone like that. I don't see us trading him, but it's a possibility.

Trade that Bama! And let him take his pacifier with him too so he won't whine so much when he leaves..

Don't get my hopes up like this! To trade away Mason and his whining? and to pick up a 3rd round pick?!? Throw in a fat guy in a red suit and I've got Christmas...

forget derrick mason. we shoulda traded ray ray and kept AT. why the ravens ever handed the future to a team like new england surprises me.

I know this might be a longshot but why not trade him to the oakland raiders for randy moss. I know moss and mason isnt a even trade for the raiders so why not throw in a 3rd round pick or 2nd round pick. Moss would do wonders for anybodies offense only if we could get him to restructure his deal

The Ravens are in a difficult situation here. Derrick Mason has shown signs of becoming a stereotypical selfish and divisive receiver. On the other hand, he only started doing these things at the tail end of the season and was a model citizen the previous two years. Even during the train-wreck that as ’05 Mason was a team player and kept quiet about things, especially the poor play of one Wright, Anthony. So if the Ravens act they are acting strictly on presumption and guesswork and nothing more. There is too little evidence to suggest that Mason will blowup at some point this season, but there is also not enough assurance that he’ll go back to being a quiet leader. Mason may settle down and never again make the kind of comments he did after the Colts fiasco. Or he might go T.O. and challenge Compu Coach to a 12 round street brawl after practice one day or worse yet insult and degrade his teammates and coaches to one of the so called “football experts” at espn.com.

As critical as I am of Ozzie Newsome at times, I admire the man for never being afraid to take a risk. At this point in time he has to keep Mason. He’s of more value to the Ravens playing for them then playing for another team. What Compu Coach and Ozzie need to do is talk to Mason face to face about his role in the offense and how that will relate to the roles of Demetrius Williams and Mark Clayton. I think Mason will fall into line once all of his grievances have been aired and his role in the offense has been explicitly defined.

Adalius is not the future of any franchise, he's only got a few good yrs. left in him, same w/ ray ray (sadly), we need to sign suggs, beef up the "o" line, get rid of boller and possibly draft a future qb 2nd rd. , all while maintaining the defense, not an easy job to do

id love a 3rd rounder for mason. draft tony gonzales he may be another tony gonzales. and DONT WASTE ANOTHER PICK ON A QB! listen to me newsome.

Here's another draft-related trade theory. . . Do the Ravens have an offer on the table for Suggs and want to see if they can sign him long-term before the draft; if not, they make the trade?

TRADE MASON FOR A THIRD, PACKAGE THAT WITH OUR CURRENT 2ND ROUND PICK TO MOVE UP IN THE 2ND AND I'M ALL FOR IT. MAKE IT HAPPEN OZZIE!!
PEOPLE LET GO OF THE PAST A.D. IS GONE WE DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY WHAT DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT THAT?

Out with the old, in with the new. A 3rd would be that additional offensive lineman we need and who knows, maybe some one who can become the next AT.

Trade him to the browns than he will REALLY have something to cry about. You know fill will want him to complement Jamal RIcard and Dinkins. Does Phil know Travis Taylor is available? Seriously though Mason is a leader on this team I don't want to trade him. Maybe next year.

Its funny to see how many people are so willing to get rid of Derek Mason. Mason is an excellent value at receiver on our team. The only reason, Clayton and Williams were soo successful was because of the presence of Mason. Mason is an excellent leader and mentor and a passionate warrior of the game. Why do we throw away a player who wants the ball that bad. Why do we praise players who do not show the audacity to challenge his team to give him the ball. All Mason is doing is expressing his passion for the game and the fact that his skills are not being used. I can only pray that we do not get rid of Mason for some lousy 3rd round pick and end up with a bunch of talented but young receivers.

Thomas is 30 and Ray is 32. Ray is a definite hall -of-famer and the face of the Ravens franchise. Though I have to admit I had similar thoughts when he was ripping the franchise last year, it'll be a sad day if Ray plays in a uniform other than the Ravens. I'm not sure about trading Mason for a 3rd rounder, especially considering the Ravens history of poor WR draft picks - Clayton and Demetrius aside.

I would think that a trade for Kyle Boller would be a more likely scenario. The Raven's have made it known that they are going to be looking for a new signal caller. Kyle Boller will be a good quarterback somewhere just not in Baltimore because the fan's hate him. I personally think Boller would be good for the Raven's especially now since he has had time to learn from a proven veteran like Steve Mcnair.

If AT (his nickname actually is AD) was the future of the franchise then the Glen Davis trade the Orioles made years ago has to be the greates trade ever. The future is still set with Ed Reed, Mark Clayton, Todd Heap, and Suggs.

Manson is still a very good receive who can put pressure on a defense. I like some have said, a third round selection may not pay the dividends that Mason offers the Ravens. However, "The Ravens traded their third round choice away to Bufflo for another has been. So, we could regain a draft pick in the third round." Does this mean that we trade Mason, not if we can not get a good quality player. So, who would you trade him to and who would replace him?

Wow - this is surprising that no one seems to care if Mason (a.k.a. that "bama") leaves the Ravens. Every play he helps us as at least a decoy, I don't think a 3rd round pick can garner that attention. We don't seem to have much luck drafting WR's either. Unless we can swing a trade with another teams disgruntled receiver ahem moss, I don't want to lose our bama.

I too would like the Ravens to rid their organization of all malcontents, like Belichick & Co. have been doing for years. But hasn't that kinda caught up with New England now? They've been lauded for being quick to get rid of players who voiced their opinions or wanted more money (Deion Branch, David Givens, Lawyer Milloy, Ty Law, etc.) but the past few years they've had to replace them with castoffs like Dwayne Starks, Andre Davis and Reche Caldwell. (We'll see what happens this year after their much-publicized free agent buying spree.)

I was also frsutrated when Mason spouted off, but the Ravens finally have a good receiving corps, and I'd hate to see them take a step back now. Clayton and Williams are great weapons in a strong 3-man package, but I don't see them as a top 1-2 combo.

After many years of fielding terrible receivers, the Ravens completely transformed when they signed Mason. He's a clutch wide-out who would give you an automatic first down every time if only the plays were designed that way (instead of 2 yards short). Don't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs -- even if he honks from time to time.

I think that Mason for Moss deal is in the works. Billick has wanted Moss here for quite some time. Do the Ravens provide a 3rd round pick with Mason or throw in Kyle Boller?? Boller would probably love to be back on the west coast.

I agree with a lot of the postings here. I'de rather not see Mason go. It'll be harder to replace this guy than people think, but if he really wants to leave . . . .

The remark about trading Boller is interresting. Why not? He's probably worth a pick.

Lets pull a Mike Martz and train Boller to be our 4th wideout (McCown)... we really need Boller next year to play at least 4 games when McNair gets hurt... McNair only got sacked 16 times last year and still came out of two games early... this year I bet with a more balanced run game he gets popped a few extra times

I find it hard to believe how many of my fellow bloggers want to run Derrick Mason out on a rail. Who can blame the man for being upset because he isn't getting enough work? At least he's not giving up on plays or running at half speed like some other premadonna wideouts (Plaxico Burress/ Randy Moss) for not being the star of the show. It would be a real shame if the rumors about Baltimore wanting to trade Mason for a third round draft pick were true. The Ravens need to come up to speed in the National Football League, and find more creative ways to use the offensive weapons that are at hand. They do need to get the ball to Mason more, everytime they do there is a positive result. Actually, the Ravens need to get the ball into the hands of all their receivers more! It's time to break out of the mold that every team in the NFL knows so well, it's time to start spreading the feild and stop running it up the gut. The Ravens offensive playbook is part of every rival teams library, our schemes are text book. Baltimore finally has a receiving corps that can get the job done, they've got the QB that can put the ball where it needs to be. Its time that they start using the weapons at hand. The running game is important, there's no doubt, but balance is equally important. Without it ships sink and planes won't fly. We have the talent it's time to use it.
Baltimore would be hurt rather than helped by Mason's departure

If the ravens trade Mason they will clearly take a huge step backwards next season and our offense will lose one of his studs. Cause Clayton will get better each year but he won`t have reached his prime next year and Demetrius showed some talent last year but he still has to prove he is a potential starter and next season will reveal his future roll for the franchise. Mason is an ambitious guy who will prove that he still is one of the league’s most reliable receiver. If we trade him for a 3rd round pick that will be ridiculous and clearly beneath his value. Randy Moss would be an option but I don`t think he`ll fit in our system as well as Mason do. So when we wanna make another run to a championship we need Mason as a part in our offense. DON`T TRADE HIM cause I want to see him wearing purple.

Trade Mike Anderson for a fullback and what happend to Pricard?

This comes from a very heavy source in Oakland. Sounds like coach Kiffin really wants a QB like Kyle Boller. Remember Kiffin is a product of Tedfords system himself...Getting Boller to back the west coast where he'll succeed makes a lot of sense. Billick wanted Randy Moss for quite some time. Oakland wants to draft CJ. Boller fits Al Davis' style which is to throw the deep ball...Andrew Walters/Moss/6th round for Boller/Mason....it's simple math !!!...Now Billick can groom Walters ! He'll be better than most QB's the Ravens are targeting in the draft. The offer is on the table now pull the trigger Ozzie !

Steveb, where did you get your info? Or, is this your theory? I for one would love it if this trade happens.

Trade Derek Mason for a third round pick is ridiculous. Trade for another Proven Number 1 receiver I'm ok with. As other's noted, he's the only proven receiver the ravens have. Mason is the best receiver the ravens have had since Michael Jackson! Yes, I said he's the only PROVEN receiver the Ravens have. Clayton is still on the cusp of being a GO TO NFL receiver and Williams is about a year behind clayton.

Weren't we all wondering why mason or ANYONE didn't have more ball's thrown to them in the Colts game considering Jamal had about 10 carries . The offense and Mcnair were HORRIBLE!

Lastly, Love him or Hate Him, Ray Lewis is the Baltimore Ravens and I hope he retires wearing Purple even if that cost's us in the playoffs. We'll definitely miss AD as a person but let's hope he has the same sucess that many other former ravens Defensive Free agents have found. NONE.

I just cracked my third bottle of Purple Kool-aid so I need to run

When Boller leads this team to the playoffs, b/c McNair hurt, hopefully the fans will back him. Boller has learned alot by watching last year. Give him 1 more chance. Just don't let him go like Derek Anderson. That was sad,to let him go for a wide reciever to play special teams ! As for Moss, forget about it !!!
