Edwin Mulitalo

Pro football is a dirty business, and Ravens left guard Edwin Mulitalo got a dose of it today. The Ravens cut him, possibly to make salary cap room to sign a linebacker. Pro football is a business, and everyone understands the economics. Mulitalo, though, was one of the most respected players in the locker room by both his teammates and the media. He spent countless hours working in the community and had a special place in his heart for children. It's tough to see him go, and everyone wishes him the best of luck. Hopefully when he is finished playing, he becomes a resident of Baltimore. - Mike Preston

First AD, and now Edwin what a shame. A dirty business it is. I undrestand how it works, and I trust in Oz. Edwin, good luck, AD, sorry I can't wish you luck, but thanks to both of you for everything you've done for the community!

As heartfelt as Preston's paragraph about Mulitalo was, the cold, harsh reality of this is that contributing to charities or being a good-hearted person mean nothing come September.

Cutting him was the correct thing to do. He didn't play last year, hardly at all at least, due to injury....younger play fills in, impresses FO. Guess who becomes expendable? And with good reason; charities and charm, regardless of age, don't win Super Bowls.

Hopefully this frees up enough space for a legitimate RB signing (excluding Jamal), or an FA LB.

Hey Mike, how come the Ravens aren't pursuing Jordan Black for right tackle? He's started 29 games the last three years, some at left and some at right tackle. He's a four year vet and obviously can play the run good. Is he too expensive for the Ravens?

why didnt the Ravens do this sooner? how long have they been sitting on this? Will this make JO want to go as well?

Nice piece. Everyone truly wishes Mule all the best.

In addition to the immediate loss of a classy player and respected veteran, I am forced to consider the impact of this move on the equally if not more signifcant contributor on the left side, Jonathan Ogden. Certainly Ogden's play did not diminish in the absence of his close friend on the field last season, but his overall passion for the game may be negatively impacted by his permanent departure from the organization. Particularly given the loss of Pashos and subsequent plans to move Terry to the right side, the Ravens can not afford to be insensitive to their only offensive Pro Bowler.

As nice of a guy as Edwin might be, It was time to see him go. Both Edwin and Mike Flynn are past their primes. Jason Brown has shown he is better than both of them at this point, and Chris Chester should be given a chance to develop. Lets also not forget about Briam Rimpf who missed last season due to injury, but looked good before injury. I think the Ravens should have cut Mulitalo and Flynn, and used that money to franchise AD, go after a RT, sign a CB, a FB and a RB. If Baltimore wants to be good, they have to start changing up personal - no matter how nice they may be

No Mulitalo could also mean no Jonathon Ogden. Bad move ravens

I hate to take away from what Multalo meant to the Ravens, which was undoubtedly alot, but I have to ask, what does this mean about J.O. coming back?

A lot of speculation had Ogden coming back if he could convice the ravens to keep Mulitalo and Mike Flynn, hopefully this isn't a bad omen.

Sad to see him go, but its time to get a RB. We have two guards that can play. He will be missed around town though. He was everywhere. A true adopted Baltimorean!! Thanks Ed....Good Luck.

that's 2 key players the Ravens have let go. Not just on the field and the locker room but also in the community. Edwin Mulitalo and Adalius Thomas are a prime example of the Ravens way. Two of the most respected players on the team no longer with us.

I met Mulitalo a few years back at one of Mike McCrary's charity functions. We sat down at a table and ate together. We talked a little football but the one thing we talked about most is the fact that I recently got married. He took a genuine interest in what I was saying and it was like hanging out with a friend you knew for quite a while. His skills may have declined a little, but he is still a good football player and deserved better from the team. This guy is class all the way.

Good bye Jamal, its sad to see you go. Hello hitting the hole full speed, its nice to meet you.

Seriously, I really think we should not trade a draft pick for McGehee and we should use those draft picks to start building a stong offensive line. Football games are won up front.

It is indeed a business. #31 took care of bizniz today too. I'm looking forward to the Cleveland games.

this is one guy that i will miss. he was dedicated to baltimore- both on and off the field. every tuesday he would be on 98 rock taking questions and voicing his opinions. the guy did tons for the community and was a great guy in the locker room. definitely worthy of the ravens hall of fame to me.

it was a smart move. the game has changed so much...

The fact that Ogden's return might have been based on whether Mulitalo stayed or not should have no bearing on what the team does.......this was a team that was starting to get long in the tooth at certain positions, and the offensive line was the most obvious......the key to their future is using the upcoming draft to help get the young fresh blood in here....I think their signing Johnson was a good move, and gives them the opportunity to use the first couple of picks on offensive lineman......rookie O-liners start quite a bit, and as long as they hold tough and don't give the Bills anything higher than a 3rd for McGahee the poor running game from last year could turn around in a hurry......keep the faith people, Ozzie does a pretty good job of keeping the teams long term success in mind and not just the short term......

Our whole offensive is pretty much gone. Not like they were all they great anyway. Time to concentrate on getting more O-line versus another RB.

it sucks that on the same day we get rid of one of the Ravens best oline men; we also say goodbye to the Franchise leading rusher. Many claim he had lost his speed and was not worth the money, but how can u say that when he still rushed for 1,100 yards behind a shoddy run offensive line lacking one of its big men up front. If only a majority of the fans weren't ignorant and understodd what it takes to get a running back through the line and how bone spurs affect the acceleration in an athlete. Good luck Jamal, thanks for the memories.

why didnt the Ravens do this sooner? Because they were hoping Jamal would take the 2 millions plus incentives contract we threw at him, and cutting Mulitalo wouldn't be necessary.

Once Jamal didn't bite on the wednesday deadline, cutting Mule was a necessary cap move to get ready for a new runner with a longer term contract.

Mulitalo was a great Raven and needs to be in the ring of honor for what he's done for the team and for the baltimore community.

But this move, sad as it is, is for the best of th team.

Likewise, if Ogden retires this year that might not be the worse thing ever. Free up cap room, start terry at LT, and get younger on the o-line.

This is what teams like the Patriots do that keep them in contention year in and year out.

Not a Ravens fan, but must congratulate you on a very good move in getting McGahee. With McNair and McGahee on the field together, you just added a whole new dimension to your offense. As for Mulitalo, I hope he pays the Skins a visit, would like to see a guy of his character join our team. Once again, Great Move.

Edwin is going to be missed.

Not so sure about Jamal. But I bet he gets up for the Ravens games..

I think Edwin will go to the skins. He'll be close by to see his old teamates win, win, win.
The skins like old geezers. He'll fit right in.

That was a bad move. Edwin was well liked. As for Jamal, he had a injure that might had handicap him. If he is healthy watch out ravens. Edwin should not come to the deadskins because he is a class act. A player like him should not be on a team whose owner like to play ring around the player

All human beings should strive for Ed's level of excellence...both on and off the field. The impact that he made to his community and the value he brought as a football player to the Ravens will be missed.

preston u are ridiculous! your article on how the trade for willis was a bad one was poorly written. I cant believe you expect those picks to be worth more than a running back. The kid can run a whole lot more than jmal. We gave jamal way to many chances and he should ahve been droped a year ago. If we have some what of a running game this year mabey just mabey we can have a better passing offense. This will make our offense so much better. I cant wait till next year. Look at the positive we ahve a young running back who has proven that he can run with a bad bills offensive line for his 3 year stay there. Now he comes to the ravens whos offensive line is much better. I am not saying hes gonna be a 1500 yard rusher but more of a dependable back than jamal. It was definitly worth the picks. You have seem willis run but you havnt seen these college offensive linemen we can draft with our misused picks perform on an NFL stage. Yes the 7 year contact for willis was a bad idea but none of us know whats going on with the ravens salary cap right now. Ozzie knows what hes doing hes a great GM and always will be. We seem to start to manage our team like the pats do even if we dont like who gets left go and who we cut. Id rather have a good team every year than try to be great for one year then have to rebuild. Ozzie is a draft pro and will work his magic with what we have come draft time. Im sure most of our picks will be offensive linemen and dbs but we will see.

Edwin ill miss you buddy and thanks for all the great years. I have to say that edwin was very professional about being cut.

How werid is it going to be seeing ray ray and ed lining up against #31 in a browns jersey.

I think it is truely sad to see how the Ravens have handled Jamal's situation. Jamal is a gifted that has given nothing but his all as a Raven. I think it is so sad to see how fans blame Lewis for losing a step in speed. How can fans say such stupid things Jamal never had a line decent enough to function even in the collegiate levels. We as fans only see speed in a running back. Speed is not what it takes to score touchdowns. I hate to see Jamal go, and I hope that he has a long lasting revival in his career, because with a decent Oline and a healthy start, a Jamal who "lost a step" is still one of the top eight backs in the league. Good luck Jamal, you are the man and you deserve a prosperous career where ever you go.

I flew from Oakland to BWI yesterday and Mr. Mulitalo (and his kids) were on the same flight. Interestingly he had a bag with him on the plane which looked as if it contained a set of pads. I've been looking for news about whether he had scheduled workout(s) with the Raiders and/or 49ers and can't find anything. Does anybody know his status? Thanks.

Ed was just in the Bay area to visit family. We wished he had a workout for the 49ers, since we grew up 49er fans. Heck even the Raiders would've been great. He'll probably play for Detroit. it was a blast watching him over the years play for the Ravens, but yeah this side of the business sucks. Thank you Baltimore for the memories...Family..
