Rex Ryan

Word around the league has Rex Ryan, the Ravens defensive coordinator, being interviewed for the head coaching job in San Diego. If Ryan gets the job, he'll do well in San Diego. First, he'll take that defense to another level. Secondly, Ryan is a basic football kind of guy. He might get a little too creative on defense, but that's because he always covers the basics. His approach will be different and accepted with the Chargers. They would be going from a hard nosed, strong disciplinarian type of coach to one who is considered a player's type of coach. The players would put out for Ryan because they would want to prove it was the previous coach that led to shortcomings in the playoffs, not them.

Mike,

I am kinda mystified how the heck can such a dysfuntional operation like the Chargers get to just pretty much "Late" in the game come and raid our talent.

I agree that Rex deserves a Job somewhere. Heck he should have been a head coach somewhere already. But this is just plain wrong. We are going to pay for this. I can't imagine this is going to go over well at the Palace.

The way it works out now is that we get knocked down a few notches and the Chargers get to be better. All because they lost all there coaches because they are such a crummy place to work.

Just not fair at all.

I think Rex would do well as a head coach. Perhaps the Ravens would look to Donnie Henderson possibly?? Either way it would be hard to overcome to lose your #1 player on defense AND the defensive coordinator.

Ravens fans everywhere should be in utter fear now that Marty is on the free agent coaching market. That means there's a chance Billick could bring him in as a special consultant to help tweak and perfect "Billick Ball". Afterall, no one knows how to run a conservative offense that looks stagnent and unprepared in big games better then Marty.

All this promotion of Ryan by Billick and the Ravens - and what could be the net result? Losing just about the best defensive coordinator in the league. While I understand the ego factor in sending your former assistants around to other teams in the league, I wonder how much real damage it does to the franchise which they leave behind.

Say it ain't so. If we lose Rex I'm going to be seriously depressed.

What a difference in personalities between hot head ego maniac Buddy Ryan (architect of the 1985 Bears league-leading "46" defense - named after Doug Plank) and his son, the humble & lovable Rex (architect of the 2006 Ravens league-leading "96" defense - named after Adalius Thomas). Buddy had some monster defenses after he left Chicago to become Head Coach -- but he never won another playoff game, let alone the Superbowl. Selfishly, I hope Rex stays.

Anything's possible; and it would be a loss to say the least if Rex were to become the head coach of the Bolts; but my guess is that Carroll from USC will get the job.

So what will it take to get Dre Bly here to replace Samari Rolle as a starter? Will a 2nd rd. and maybe a filler player do the trick? Can we rework some contracts and make this fit with our financial plans? I mean Bly would be perfect, because we won't have to worry about throwing a rook out there on the island and we play more man than that Tampa 2. Thoughts?

If San Diego was really such a bad place to work as one person suggests, then why would Ryan decide to make himself available for an interview? Or any of the other big name coaches who are being mentioned?

Truth is, we can have anyone we want, this is the best job available this year, anywhere at any level. A young 14-2 team signed for the long haul is about as attractive of a coaching situation as it gets. :) See you next year.

anyone ever worry Rex will get the job and than turn around and sign AD?

I hate to selfish too but it would be a shame if Rex left now. I know he deserves a head coaching position but we still need him here in Baltimore. We have one more solid year to get to the Super Bowl again before salary cap issues come into play and I know we would have a better chance at doing it with him on our side.

Why all the angst? The Ravens have proven through the years that the defensive coordinator position is an interchangeable job. Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan, Jack del Rio and now Rex Ryan have all had their chance and the defense has been near the top all the time. I have no fear that the next defensive coach will do same.

It will truly be one of the longest offseasons that we will face if it comes down to us losing both A.D. and Ryan. We should collectively be holding our breath!

Well...I don't think Rex didn't get the job because he wasn't the best fit...I think he didn't get the job because the San Diego organization is a bunch of morons. But their loss is definitely our gain. Welcome back, Rex!

:-)
