Boller

Regardless of if you write or say his name, any mention of Kyle Boller in this town always draws a heavy reaction. Someone recently asked me why, and I tried to explain that this town wants a quarterback of its own so badly. The Ravens have brought in journeymen before, but Boller was a first-round draft pick. He had blonde hair, blue eyes and was a California dude. He was hand-chosen by head coach Brian Billick, and every team ideally wants to build its franchise around a quarterback, like Peyton Manning in Indinapolis and Tom Brady in New England. Ravens fans love Steve McNair, but he was groomed in Tennessee. Ravens fans are still waiting for a QB they can call their own, and Boller was, and still is, their hope.

Here's the thing about Boller . . . Is he what we hoped for? Not yet. Would I rather have a different backup to McNair going into 2007? Probably not. Boller has 4 years in the system, and knows it better than any QB out there. To be honest, if McNair gets hurt in 2007, which I hope he does not, there is no other QB in the "Backup QB" pool I would want in there above Boller. Who knows, if he gets extended time, maybe he will show us something and earn a shot for 2008

Hello,
As I see it Mcnair along with Brain lost the play off game with Indy.Boller did come in and replaced Mcnair when he went down and did a very good job.

Give Boller one more year under Mcnair and I believe he will be ready to go. Mcnair is a good QB for Boller to train under.

The Ravens allowed Anderson of the Browns to escape and I believe he could have been a good qb to build on.

Boller with a good front line, good receivers
and a good running game would be an
admorable QB. I just believe the media has given him a bad rap.

When he did qb, receivers dropped balls, the line did not hold and the running game was not there. Give Kyle the tools and the make judgement.

It would not hurt to draft another QB for the future.

There's always the dream that Kyle is another Sea Biscuit -- the horse that ran faster sideways than any other horse could run straight. When he learned to run straight, he became world champion.

I think the Raven fans just want a quarterback who has his years of playing in front of him not a temp.
I think the Charger owner did a despicable thing by waiting until all the coaching vacancies were filled before Schotenheimer is fired,

boller is the all american kid -but i thought he might be as good as bert jones -was not close...he should watch some bert jones and lydelll mitchell tapes and learn something for him and j. lewis....its almost like an inferiority complex...much like the ravens are facing during the off - season...
the highs in our 1st 11 seasons -
1 superbowl and 4 overall post season appearances...lows - what have we done in post season lately..
the ravens are still a team that was the browns, city for the baltimore colts till march of 1984 -and are 35 miles from where the redskins play...the ravens to be honest are still in the shawdow of all three...the only way to get out of the shell -is to win, and make the post season yearly...

Uh...maybe that speaks for some fans, but not this one. My gripe with Boller bashers is that Boller hasn't done anything to warrant the nastiness of the continual low blows from Mr. Preston and others. Yes, he is not what we need as a starter. And I am as dissapointed as anyone about how he panned out. But Billick takes much of the blame for putting him in a position as a rookie to attempt to carry this team. I have yet to read anything that indicates Boller has not worked hard and conducted himself professionally. As such, I think the apparent joy you take in slamming him should be left aside.

that is definitely the truth

Boller may not be the answer but, the Ravens won't get much return on the Boller investment via a trade. The guy knows the vanilla Raven offense system.. The Ravens are playing with fire thinking McNair will get through another complete season after last years' playoff disappointment and the potential Ogden retirement. Let Boller play out his rookie deal as a backup. They could draft a QB in the later rounds to groom. The RB/OL is more of a concern to address with an early pick and history has shown we don't have success identifying a QB of the future with high picks. Boller is a standup guy who doesn't shy away from controversy. He handled the demotion well and may benefit from a couple years as a backup which he should have received coming out of college.

The only thing I hope for out of Boller is that he never takes another snap for the Ravens.

Kyle Boller, regardless of unfair expectations and even more unfair criticisms amidst team wide adversity in the last couple seasons, has made phenominal progress since his rookie year. He has improved every season. He had the third best rookie record in NFL history (5-3) before being injured his first year in Baltimore. He had four games with QB ratings over 100 in 2004, leading his team to only barely miss the playoffs (one game out of the Wildcard). And while injury ultimately led to what would be an abismal season for the entire team in 2005, provided his late season heroics, one can only wonder what he could have done with another entire season under his belt. In fact, one could be led to wonder the same thing about the 2006 season, where he only played twice, but had phenominal showings both times, as well as having great play in the pre-season. Considering McNair's inconsistancy issues throughout the season and especially in the Ravens' painful playoff loss to eventual Superbowl Champion Indianapolis Colts, and taking into account Boller's greater mobility, cannon arm, and increased accuracy, one is left to silently wonder if perhaps we might not have won that game, and eventually held up the Lombardi Trophy ourselves, it Kyle had been our starting QB.

I guess we'll never know that, because you can't change the past. But you can change what happens in the future, and while big money contracts dictate that Steve McNair will most likely be reclaiming his spot as starter next season, if Baltimore decides to hold onto Boller, which they should considering he already knows their system better than anyone, the SMART money says that at just 25 he's only now hitting his peak, and that we already have our future franchise QB. You may not believe it now, but 10 years from now, just remember that SOMEONE was smart enough to say it.

I still love Kyle and believe he will become a good player. A couple more years with McNair should help tremendously.

Not to be picky, but I believe Boller has Brown hair...

...and I hate this weather.

Am I the only one that thinks this year's price increases are outlandish? My tickets went from $60 to $80 a seat!!!! That's an increase of $200 per seat for my season tickets. That seems way too big a jump for one year.

I must say when the Ravens win a game with Boller at QB it's pretty exciting. Stumbles and bumbles and a 70 yrd TD pass. What a guy! His biggest problem is he just can't win on the road.

I do like Boller's stong arm. If anyone can get the ball downfield to D. Williams, he can. Man, would that open up the field. If he can just learn to relax, be patient, and get he completion % up, I think they would be in good shape with him. Another year of learning under McNair and who knows?

Mike, we all know you don't like Boller, but even you can recognize that the man has brown hair, not blonde.

Oh my god!!! My only hope for Boller is that they put him on a fast train back to California. The Ravens do need a young and teachable quarterback... but Boller ain't it.

As I now start to come out from under the shroud of disappointment that was the premature end to our Ravens' season, it seems apparent that next year is a year of tremendous opportunity, and desperation. Time is running short, that is why it does not matter what it costs, Adalius Thomas must be brought back. the defense must remain intact and Thomas is a lynchpinand could be the key for the future. Ozzie, Bischotti, make it happen!

I agree that this town wants a home grown hero who can lead us to the playoffs for years, but any notion that this town believes Boller still has a shot at being that guy is completely ludicrous. Boller was given plenty of chances and every time he blew it. The very thought of Boller under center gives me goose bumps...will he fumble? will he trip and fall down? will he wing it as hard as he can into the ground?

How can you mention "hope" and "Boller" in the same breath or sentence? Hopeless is the case.

Mike, how many QB saviors did the previous franchise have? Elway pulled a punk move and claimed he didn't want to play in cold weather so he went to the warm state of Colorado. Then Bert Jones..well Yeah Bert Jones he won the affection of his offensive linemen so much that they began yelling "Olay" so the defensive linemen could get to him faster. And then there's this one guy...name escapes me..O yeah Unitas. So there you have it...we've had one QB to build around EVER!! Franchise QBs are hard to come by cousin...the only thing we can do as a city is buy into Boller this coming season because it's no way McNair stays healthy the whole year. Either we buy into Boller or another rebuilding offense by drafting a QB again.

Face it Boler has beengiven no real chance. O Line was iand is still ??? Without a little tie a newbie stand no chance. Look around the leaue at the newbies w/o O Line. the Great Roth faired real well 06 didn't he. No one really know what Boller has to offer yet.
McNairs ar showed age latter part of year.
raf a QB and get read for Boler in releif next yr.

s.s. boller has sailed

Boller is Boller...We all wish he was the guy, but he's not. Will this franchise ever get it's act together with the quarterback position - I doubt it. The recent playoff lose cut to the bone - I have no doubt that this was supposed to be our year. How disheartening to see McNair play so badly, and to watch Billick's pathetic offensive play calling. Am I the only one that realizes our offense played great and looked renewed whenever we played average or weak teams, and then stumbled and bumbled against the very good teams. It still has a long way to go and I am really sick of Billick's philosophy of "playing not to lose". Just like a prevent defense, his "Playing not to lose" guarantees a LOSS. I can only hope he watched the good offenses in the playoffs and learned from the head coaches who are not AFRAID to take chances downfield!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boller is as bad as any QB prospect I have watched in over 40 years of following the NFL. He is the anthesis of Unitas. He completely melts down under the slightest pressure.

The witch hunt that forever destroyed Kyle Boller in this town shows that Baltimore football fans (and perhaps all sports fans these days) are unwilling to go through the growing pains required to develop a young player, whether that be a point guard, pitching ace or quarterback. In this instant gratification world, we can only accept a proven commodity and that's a shame because it removes some of the best aspects of being a sports fan: witnessing the maturation a hometown player as he develops and, when he does achieve success, proudly calling him "our guy." Preston was right that McNair was groomed in Tennessee -- I wonder if we'll ever be able to say that a Ravens quarterback was groomed in Baltimore.

I support keeping McNair at QB next season and giving Boller another year to learn under him. These two quarterbacks are almost polar opposites to each other, so if Boller can learn McNair's control and discernment, he will be an assett.

What we can't compare is Boller under Billick's offensive coaching. Remember that the first part of the season was an offensive guessing game, but once Billick took over on offensive things looked a lot better (except that game against Indy where it really counted).

I think Baltimore should table this heated debate until after we see what happens next year - Billick's offense, McNair's health, Boller's opportunities...

Take what Marc said (at 06:45 am) and RACK IT!

I don't think under Billick even Johnny U would have developed into the Hall of Famer that he proved himself to be over the course of his career. Billick can only try to shove QBs into his small, BillickBall model -- which is to say...he is so personally afraid of his players making mistakes on offense, that he transfers that fear -- wittingly or unwittingly -- directly to the players. The result is a serious lack of confidence on the part of the players, which is the worst possible thing that could happen to a QB. Billick is a QB killer -- not a QB groomer.

Here is the thing: Boller has shown plenty of good play and explosiveness over his last 10-12 games to warrant being given a chance to be QB.

If we go with Boller again as starter, the key will be GAMEPLAN. Boller is going to be a Brett Favre type of QB, not a Steve McNair. You're going to have to let him throw it down the field early and often and take the good with the bad.

I think Ozzie and Billick have realized as much, as you see everytime Boller is in the game in the last 10-12 games the gameplan opens up. We throw on 1st down. Throws and more intermediate than short.

I like Boller based on his attitude, perseverence, and physical talent.

I like that fact that, if we keep him, it will hopefully KILL DILFER-BALL. We need a QB who makes us open it up.

I'd rather see this offense sink or swim than see another game like our playoff loss.

I was there and that was painful.

And there is no doubt in my mind that with Boller starting that game and NOT Steve McNair we win it. Boller's problem has never been at home, its been away.

Now if that game were an away game, at this point in their career's I'd want Steve starting.
