Jamal Lewis

It will be interesting to see how the Ravens negotiate with running back Jamal Lewis. Few knew the ankle injury was still affecting Lewis' performance, but general manager Ozzie Newsome said he was aware of the problem the entire season. My feelings don't change. I still say they offer him a reduced contract from a season ago, and I certainly wouldn't provide him with a $5 million roster bonus. But deep down inside, I don't think Lewis is finished as a runner. There is still something left in the tank even though he's not the Lewis of old. - Mike Preston

Mike : I say it's time to break ties with Jamal.

I agree with Ozzie's assesment of Jamal. What I saw was an offense designed to establish more passing this past season (duh)and did not generally provide Jamal lead blocking with most of the formations he ran on. On occassions where he had his FB in front of him, he generally had good success. The work still needs to be with the O-Line. As D schemes get more complicated, I think the Ravens need more creativity with the blocking schemes and technique. John O (or the new L.O.T.?) is a concern!

The biggest problem I saw out of Lewis had nothing to do to with his running ability, but rather style. He never seemed to just hit the whole. He had a tendancy to stutter step, look for the big play, then go. This allowed the defense to close whatever hole was there. There were a ton of 1 and 2 yard gains that could have easily been 3, 4 or 5 yard gains. Unless the bones spurs caused the stuttering, he shouldn't be re-signed.

Even though the 2003 Lewis will never return, I hope he stays. I don't think he is owed anything by the Ravens, but he has done so much over the years that it feels like we need Jamal back for one more year, just for sentimental reasons.

No it is not his ankle it is all those other hits he has takes over the past years. He is a "Back up" running back now.

I feel the same way. I think the issue with the ankle ( bone spurs) may have given some insight into the season and his running or lack there of. I think the Ravens should make a decent attempt at bringing him back and pairing with a fresh set of legs in the back field. If not I'd still follow his career where ever he lands.

I would like to see Jamal come back. He knows the team and what the Ravens are capable of. Unless there is a knock down great back in the draft or someone surprising shows up for free agency, then let's make a play for Jamal. On the same point, Jamal needs to pull a "Jerome Bettis" for the team, take a cut and show that you are worth extra bucks. Tie an incentive to his pay. Our offensive line played well and should be getting better. We need a ball control game and I think that Jamal can give us that.

Oh no! Jamal bashers will have to speculate whether this newly publicly disclosed injury is the reason for his so-so year. I'm rooting 100% for Jamal to prove the nay sayers wrong, whether it's with the Ravens or another team. Just hope he doesn't haunt the Ravens by going to another AFC team. I think the Raven's might be in the Superbowl if they gave Jamal the ball more in the Colts game. (As did Ogden think so!)

So, really, what are the fans supposed to think now? Jamal was playing injured the whole year and that is why the running game suffered? And if he is completely healed and ready to go next season how can anyone be 100% positive that he will be the Jamal of old? I don't want to be the one making that decision! Before this new injury revelation a majority of Ravens fans would probably agree that Jamal was done as a Raven. Now? Who knows?

I think that bringing Jamal back would be huge. He is a great game controller and when given sufficient carries, maximizes and tires the defense. I agree with the fact that with more carries he would have tired out the Colts, giving the Ravens more of a chance. To all those people who say Jamal Lewis is done I say look at it with an open mind. He still managed to crack at least 100yrds over 1,000 this year. I have a feeling that his game will shoot up again next year and Ravens staff will be kicking themselves if they let him go. Five million dollars may be a little much, but in my opinion, bringing him back next year is a necessity.
