Gadget Guy
During the offseason, the Ravens need to find a gadget guy, a player who can pull off some trick plays. For years, the Steelers had one in Antwaan Randle El. The Saints have one in running back Reggie Bush. Even if a gadget guy isn't involved in a play, just their mere presence on the field puts added pressure on defenses. Plus, the Ravens could use a little imagination on offense. With the Ravens' defense, one touchdown makes a big difference. I thought the Ravens' gadget guy would be receiver Mark Clayton, but the Ravens performed their own magic trick, and made him disappear on the field for several games this season. - Mike Preston

Perhaps Clayton will get to return punts this coming season.

the ravens don't need a gadget guy they need to start the season off with a expanded offense. they have plenty of gadget guys like b.j sams, clayton, moore who is tall and if the quarterback can throw it high(steve mcnair) even champ cant get it but moore can. they just need to come out throwing the ball this year alot and stop running so many plays that dont go to the endzone and have no purpose. they need to stop eating clock and start eating scoreboards our defense scores so if the offense scores then we will have to be respected and as a diehard ravens fan im tired of getting no respect. they said we were good because of our record not because of our team. if we were a wild card team they would of had us out in the first round.if the ravens can do that and the d stays #1 look for a undefeated season and that comes from the sports fan in me not the ravens fan!!!!

What are these trick plays you speak of Mike? You know this kind of play calling would actually require creativity on the part of Brian Billick and the offensive coaching staff. Did you mean like some sort of play other than Jamal running for two yards and than falling down or Billick calling a 5 yard out pass on 3rd and 9? Could you please elaborate for all the Ravens fans who have had their minds warped from eight years of "Billick Ball"?

The Ravens absolutely need the gadget guy element. In the AFC North it's especially a must. The offensive plays needs a creative touch. I wonder why they don't mix BJ in on a direct snap or something. They should also try Clayton on a WR pass, maybe in the red zone.

A gadget guy would certainly be useful, but what would be more useful would be more aggressiveness on offense. As has been said by many, the Ravens simply much stretch the field by trying to throw deep several times a game. It is immaterial whether every attempt results in a completion is immaterial - what's important is that the opposing defense realizes that it can't just focus on the part of the field 20 yards and less from the line of scrimmage (that's how the Bengals beat us - we never tried to throw deep, so the defense was able to focus solely on runs and short passes, without worrying about the deep ball.) The threat of the deep ball is what makes the Ersatz Colts' offense so tough to defend - defenses always have to worry about Manning going deep.)
The first play of our playoff game against the Irsays should have been a deep pass attempt off play action. It would have made the statement that we were going to be aggressive, put the fear of the deep ball in the defense's heads, and opened up the field for the running game and short passes. Instead, we came out passive, and the tone of the game was set in the Irsay's favor - they got an easy three and out with no aggressive play on our part, and then marched downfield for a field goal and a lead that took some steam from the crowd and gave some confidence to the Irsays.
Gadget play - early in the 2004 season, we ran flea flicker. It was executed perfectly, and Boller (who is a good QB if given some protection) threw an easy TD pass. We never saw the play run again. Why not? It worked! Peyton called one against us, and it got them a first down.

i've seen the ravens try some of these gadget plays and they were a disaster. how many times did we see travis taylor and now mark clayton on an end around only to get swamped in the backfield for a major loss. how about mark clayton trying that half back option pass in the buffalo game. i think that pass is still hanging up in the air down there at m&t somewhere. there is a simple reason the ravens do not run gadget plays. they can't !!!!

Maybe the Ravens could start off with something small and simple – like a shuttle pass. (Remember, Cincinnati used it against us to gain a 1st down on 3rd & 14, 2 plays before the flea flicker/40 yard TD to Houshmandzadeh.) It's a decent way to avoid pressure on the QB and is relatively safe, because unlike a lateral or a pitch behind the line of scrimmage, if it's dropped it's just an incomplete pass. Think of it as training wheels for a REAL gadget play; sort of a lead up to a time when we can actually hang with the big boys.

The ravens undefeated sir!!?? How can a team with a quaterback with a wet-noodle for a arm go undefeated? Lets look at a real problem here with McNair, the reason to bring him in was to win us the big game. He looked like a lame duck out there against the Colts defense. YOU CAN NOT THROW A INT IN THE REDZONE IN THE PLAYOFFS. Sure it would be fun to see trick plays, but it would also be fun to watch a quaterback make throws down the field. Lets not all blame Billick here, he can only call plays that his players can make. This is the ravens fan talk here, and being honest with myself and the team.

SKAYBALTIMORE SPEAKS OF THE SHUTTLE PASS AS A SIMPLE GADGET PLAY FOR THE RAVENS TO START OFF WITH. I THINK THAT WAS ATTEMPTED ALREADY THIS YEAR IN THE SAN DIEGO GAME TO DANIEL WILCOX DOWN BY THE GOAL LINE. AND HE FUMBLED IT !!!!!!! APPARENTLY EVEN THE SIMPLE SHUTTLE PASS IS TOO COMPLICATED FOR THIS OFFENSE.
