Brian Billick

Only yesterday afternoon, everything seemed so chummy with the Ravens. They swore the window of opportunity wasn't about to close and they had pretty much solved any cap problems that might arise in the future. Break out the champagne and roll out the red carpet.

But it was strange today when news leaked out that head coach Brian Billick's contract extension was only for one year, which takes him through to the end of 2008. If you read between the lines, you have to believe owner Steve Bisciotti doesn't have as much faith in Billick as he tried to display Tuesday. Billick got a pay raise, but all the contract extension did was not make him a lame duck next season.

If Bisciotti had so much faith in Billick, why didn't he add more years to the extension? I like the idea of giving him only one year. It puts pressure on Billick, and keeps him focused, which he wasn't in 2005. Basically, Billick is on the hot seat again. One thing we have learned through the years is that general manager Ozzie Newsome and his scouting department will provide the Ravens with good players. A good coach should be able to get them to the playoffs. Scratch that. In this era of parity, an average coach should be able to get them to the playoffs.

There is no way Bisciotti could have been happy with the team's loss to Indianapolis in the playoffs. Clearly, the Ravens had the better team. Again, it came down to the offense and poor play-calling. I suspect Bisciotti will keep an eye on his head coach. You can't give Billick too much rope or he'll hang himself as well as the team. As long as he is kept in check, he's a good coach. The Ravens aren't giving him much room to go astray. - Mike Preston

sigh... I suppose you're right, he is the worst 13-3 is the league. What ever that is supposed to mean. If you think there is someone out there better to be the head coach of the Baltimore Raven's I'd love to hear who its is. Last time I checked you were spouting off about some college coach from Iowa. Those college coachs alway work out real well dont' they..?.

Brian Billick should have resigned and not signed that one year extension. He is going too let his ego and pride be the end of him. This owner really has it in for him after that press conference where he let the media in on business that should have been handled behind closed doors that told the real story.Brian usually is not stupid, but here in this case he is, he should let this owner see if Ron Riviera,Josh Mc daniels,or the "great"Kirk Ferentz can do a better job.He should have resigned after 8 years and moved on to the next NFL market. He most likely will be gone after this contract then you will get your wish and some other clown will be the coach. Not saying that Brian is Don Shula, but the Baltimore media and fans ran him out of town years ago and the Baltimore Colts never regrouped after that I hope that this football owner does not turn out to be a clown only time will tell.

I'd like to thank you guys for your football coverage over the last 2 weeks. Watching, reading or thinking about the Super Bowl with the Dolts is way too painful. You have given me something worthwhile to read while I wait for the dreaded game to be over.
I would be curious to know what kind of feedback you are getting from your readers about the game. I could not be less interested in watching this game. I can't remember if I've ever missed a Super Bowl but I will not be watching this one.

Mike,

Now before we all run off and start talking about "Billick Ball" lets remember that McNair will have something he did not have last year. Thats a whole off season to learn the playbook and perhaps this is a prime time to let Rick N put in some newer creative plays. I think the fact that the offense was dumbed down to compensate for McNair's late arrival is not being discussed much. Throw in Billick taking over play calling after game 6 and they really couldn't do much but the same old thing.

One year left for Billick to wake up this offense is prob more likely what this one year extension message is conveying more than anything.

Of course maybe Billick ball is all we get. I certainly hope not. I am getting tired of nodding off at M&T everytime the offense takes the field.

I wonder...how do details of a contract that is supposed to be kept secret just happen to "leak out"?

I don't think "lame duck" accurately describes the situation Billick will be in next year. He'll be a lame duck if they find themselves eliminated from playoff contention, but unless that happens he won't be in danger of losing his job. I doubt Bisciotti will at any point in the season rule out bringing Billick back.

It does mean he's still on the hot seat, though. If it produces another 13-3 season, that might mean one-year extensions are the way to go.

Maybe Brian doesn't want to stay here to much longer, maybe is knows he is getting burnt out like Cowher. He wants to make his last run or two and than take some time off.

I think people are making too much of this.

I have some unconditional faith in what Ozzie and Bisciotti do even if I don't understand everything. Maybe this 1 yr contract is designed to keep Billick on his toes like you say, ". . . keeps him focused." If the Ravens want to be a team that makes consecutive runs in the playoffs I would think they need to stick to one coach for a number of years. Maybe that is thier intent even though they go for the 1yr for 2007-08.

I agree with what F Smith is saying about the Ravens offseason scenario. We know that Billick is going to be calling the plays and McNair is going to be the QB. Now they have plenty of time to work on schemes. I like Billick calling the plays. He has mentioned that he missed doing it and he has fun with it. If the team has more fun playing the game I have more fun watching them.

Hopefully the Ravens figure out what they are going to do with JaLew soon. That way these guys can get to work. I'de like to see the Ravens draft a gadget guy like Mike mentioned in a previous article. If the Ravens can get these things accomplished the offense will be really different next season.

Dilfer is still upset over Billick's decision not to bring him back following the Super Bowl victory. I'm still upset Billick didn't pull Elvis "Gaarbage" out of the Steelers playoff game that following year and insert Randall Cunningham.

Most players are on year to year contracts, why not the coach.

5 million a year is a hot seat that many coaches would love to sit on.

Steve, Ozzie, & Brian are on the same page, understand, and believe in each other and in the process. That is more important to success than details about these contracts.

Baltimore fans ran Don Shula out of town? Although I was a lad of 13 at the time, I seem to recall Shula negotiated his Dolphin deal WHILE STILL UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE COLTS. In fact, the Dolphins were penalized a first round draft pick for TAMPERING. This is why I found it so peculiar of Shula to slam Saban so hard for his Alabama move. Mr Pot...meet Mr Kettle. Anyway, Shula left, Colts win Super Bowl and get first round pick. He'd have left once Irsay became owner regardless.

Why don't head coaches replace the starting QB when they stink, like any other position? Kyle Boller would of made a difference in the game with the colts. Like BACON said about elvis Gaarbage should of been replaced by Randal. hopefully we draft a good running back with good hands & say bye bye to jamal. Mike Anderson should be able to pass block better, knowing the playbook & Musa smith will get his turn.( unless hurt again) . Mr Billick your boy Kyle is better with a year under McNair, so don't hesitate to change QB when you have to especially in 1 and done games

Fellow Marylanders, give Billick a break please. He did win us a super-bowl if you recall and it was since the turn of the century. Sure he has made several mistakes such as drafting Kyle Boller, and his conservative playcalling against the hated Colts, but overall he is an intellegent coach and I challenge anyone to name someone who could step in and do a better job.

Billick will have a job 24 hours after being fired by Baltimore. He doesn't need us or our multiple year contracts

This guy has done wonders for your organization. It hurts me to even admit this coming from the midwest.

Ozzie is on to something here....and Billick is the answer!

Do you know how many teams would be dying for Billick's services right now?

How do you think they feel in Oakland?

Brian's days are numbered and unfortunately, he will be most rememebered for not inserting Randall Cunningham in the 2002 playoffs when it was clear that elvis could not get the offense and did not do well. It did not take an "offensive guru" to see that. I like Brian but that wasn't good coaching and denied the franchise a place in history among elite teams for two bowls. Instead the one super bowl will be considered a fluke. Remember, it was the defense that won it and not the offense. Randall will have better luck in Canton! God bless you Randall.
