Getting Clayton involved

Head coach Brian Billick said Wednesday that it's in the game plan to get receiver Mark Clayton the ball more often. Billick said the coaching staff made that decision after the Oakland game nearly two weeks ago. The sad part is that should have been a major part of the game plan by the end of last season. Clayton was hot in the final quarter of the 2005 season and had a terrific training camp to open 2006. He is elusive and explosive right after the catch. The Ravens are a little late on this one, but at least Clayton should be a factor in the offense for the rest of the season.

He played a big role in the last game against the Browns. After the first 2nd game of the season they made the decision to make him a bigger part of the offense. He's only a second year player who did nothing the first half of last season. And all you can do is complain that it took them "too long."

Our problem has much more to do with a lack of execution than coaching decisions or a plain vanilla game plan. It doesn't matter how imaginative the plan or quick the coaching decisions if you are constantly throwing the ball over, behind, and at the feet of your receivers.

The bigger problem is finding a QB that can actually deliver an accurate pass to any receiver. McNair came up big in crunch time to dig us out of a hole in the 4th quarter in Cleveland. But, it was largely his fault we got in that hole in the first place. Hopefully, our "work in progress" QB will begin to improve soon, 'cause last weeks effort isn't going to work against Cincinatti, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Carolina, Atlanta or Denver and 5-8 won't get us in the playoffs.

Is it me or does Clayton always seem to loose yardage when they run him in a reverse? Is the offensive set too obvious or is it the lack of blocking?

I keep hearing how explosive Clayton is but have really not seen it. He did show a little of what he can do in Cleveland. Let's hope the offensive play calling and the sets and blocking can get him the opportunity he needs.

Clayton really gets a lot of YAC and seems like he could thrive in a west coast system. We supposedly run a west coast system, but where are our little slants that every other team uses. You know passes where the receiver isn't expected to make a somersault to catch the ball? It looks so hard to catch a ball in this system. I'm not asking for post patterns and deep routes, I don't see the line holding up for that sort of thing. I just want to see some slants to Marky Mark Clayton.

i totally agree with you on this one mike. clayton is a beast, especially on madden 07 ;P

All those cribbing about McNair - cross the bridge when you come to it. McNair played well enough to get us a win and will again. Stop mistaking real football with fantasy one

Mike, you're giving away intel to san diego. From the signonsandiego website: "Injury report... There also was a report on a Baltimore Sun blog that quarterback Steve McNair has sore ribs."
Any cheap shots on his ribs and I'm gonna blame you.

The Ravens were slow on this one. Clayton has exhibited breakout ability and an extra gear since the first time he touched the ball in Baltimore. Since he is the only raven who has that ability one would think it would be utilized. Since McNair has been somewhat inaccurate why not dump some short passes over the middle to Mr. Clayton and let him make something happen. It would work a lot better than Jamal trying to jump over the line on a crucial fourth and 2.

It is about time. He was pretty good and he does have decent speed. If they can get him involed more often, the ofense will be alright

Relax and cheer up KJM. We are 3-0 and our "work in progress" quarterback has already led us to 2 more road wins than we had last year.

If I remember correctly, Clayton was a little banged up halfway through last year. Regardless, he did have an awesome second half considering the offense he was playing on. It does make you wonder why they waited until week 3 to get him more involved.

It's time to be happy. We have a quarterback who can lead us to victory... including the ability to come back from a 11 point deficit in the 4th quarter on the road against a team in our division!

You say McNair got us in that hole. I didn't see him on defense. All I noticed was a) Mark Clayton dropped a few key passes (one would have been a TD) and our veteran once co-mvp quarterback did not turn the ball over. What would Boller have done??? Dropped a few snaps like Aaron Brooks? Get ancy and throw some picks?

I don't think we need McNair to run an explosive offense. I don't think we need a more elaborate gameplan. What seems to be more important is a consistent offense that can get our defense some rest while scoring a moderate amount of points. So far -- mission accomplished.

The Ravens are not stretching the field, so opposing defenses are beginning to cram the line and take away all the short passes underneath.

Clayton has the speed to stretch the field. Why don't they throw a long pass to him, instead of continually hitting him on the short stuff and hoping he'll break free after the catch? It seems like Billick won't throw a long pass to a WR who's shorter than 6-foot-4.

The O-line just isn't giving McNair adequate time to throw. Sure, he hasn't played great. But, he's protected the ball while running for his life. He seems to be rushing things a bit.

I still think the Ravens aren't running the ball enough to stay out of 3rd and long. And I don't know why they ran so many times up the middle against Cleveland, when clearly they were more vulnerable on the corners, just off tackle. When they ran off-tackle, most of the time it was for good yardage. Just when you thought they were beginning to see the light, back to the pass on 1st and second down again. And again back to 3rd and long.

Fassel's play calling isn't getting it done for me. He did such a good job when with the Giants. I don't know what gives. Maybe it was that guy under him in NY, whose now coaching the Saints, that made him look so effective. This offense just isn't playing to its strengths and protecting against its weakness - the O-line.

Can you name more than 1 free agent quarterback who came in and did well for their new team in the first year? QBs get used to the offensive system they are in, and when they are forced to adopt a new system they struggle. Give it time. I swear, if Peyton Manning came here as our new QB and threw 1 interception our fans would be all over him. Patience. Look at Steve's past work he has already proven himself. Give him the benefit of the doubt.
