Defensive Line

After two preseason games, the Ravens' defensive line has become more of a question mark than the offensive line. Defensive tackle Kelly Gregg is the only player who has consistently made plays. Defensive end Trevor Pryce was a non-factor in Denver last season, and hasn't been that impressive in Baltimore. Defensive end/outside linebacker Terrell Suggs is a good pass rusher, but often freelances too much, especially against the run. To become a premier end, Suggs has to play well against quality offensive tackles. He often disappears against tackles such as the Bengals' Willie Anderson. In these types of matchups, he has to at least come out with a draw.

Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, the team's top pick out of Oregon, looked slow last week in his debut against the Eagles, but that was his first game. He may have been thinking too much, but there were times when he was overpowered. Reserve defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin has played well in spurts, but not consistently enough to challenge for a starting role. There are two new starters on the defensive line, and it might take time to find the right chemistry. Right now, though, it doesn't look promising, and the Ravens will miss linemen Anthony Weaver and Maake Kemoeatu early in the season. Both Weaver and Kemoeatu signed free-agent contracts with other teams during the offseason.

P.S. Head coach Brian Billick didn't know where punter Leo Araguz was when Araguz failed to attend practice Saturday. Billick admitted Monday that Araguz was with his wife who was giving birth. If Matt Stover's wife ever delivers on game day, we're in trouble. There would be no one responsible for getting the field goal team on the field in the waning moments.

While I'm not sure that I agree with the DL being a bigger concern than the OL, I do agree it could be a problem. Pryce has made zero plays to my recollection, and counting on Ngata to be a big time player this year would be a mistake. Even with that, I do not think it's too much to ask to at least be as good as the DL were last year, which really shouldn't be too hard.

If Kelly Gregg is the most consistent force on our line this year we're gonna be in trouble.

Your constant negativity is starting to get embarassing. I used to like to read your comments to see what I could agree with or diagree with, but now your act has grown stale.

The Ravens' defense will be better at stopping the run towards the end of the games this year simlply because of their better rotation. They won't have to be on the field as much because McNair will manage the clock better. Lets see if Ngata will be able to create problems through the middle next year when he ll have a decent off-season program. Suggs is not a great rusher but is a good DE to have around.

So let me see if I understand this correctly. You simply assume the Ravens would not have a backup plan in the event Stover were to be injured or need to be with his family and then you write about it as if it were fact?

And did you notice that Ngata was double teamed against the Eagles. I thought taking up blockers was his role on the team.

Your glass is always half empty. It must suck to be you.

I see your back to taking childish shots at Billick nice work. I guess you can't gripe about Boller at the moment so he is the next best thing. Its a shame that when the ravens win fans are more excited at rubbing it in the face of the local hack media than in the face of their opponents.

I hope Ray Ray is noticing this as well because its going to be a long day for him in Tampa if our D line doesnt start consistently blowing off the line like we know they must.
PS. Kelly Greg is awsome. He is our trench warrior. The round man with the square hit.

Mike,

Dwan Edwards seemed to show much better mobility and was very sharp with his tackling. Don't you think he's been a bright spot, thus far, for the D-Line?

Ted

That last paragraph was NASTY, Michael. Downright NAS-TAAAY!! Priceless.

The Ravens seem to have a bit of young not-so-much talent on the defensive line. This group seems like it could really have some pretty good players in the future.

Dwan Edwards has shown a lot of potential and I think could turn into a real quality DT/DE lineman. He could turn out to be an excellent 4-3 tackle or a 3-4 run stopping end with his unique combination of size and athleticism. So far, he has looked impressive in his outings in the preseason. Do you seem him making any impact as a backup lineman this year for the Ravens?

As far as Trevor Pryce is concerned, do you think a lot of his ineffectivity right now is related to him learning the scheme under Rex Ryan, or is it mostly because he is past his prime (he has not been nearly as dominant in the last couple of years for the Broncos)

Underrated tackle Kelly Gregg looks like he could have a good season in this year's 4-3 defense. He struggled for a while as he wasn't really a very effective nose tackle when we emplyed the 3-4 a couple years ago, however he seemed to play much better last year. Do you see Gregg possibly having a pro-bowl calibur season?

Suggs has played dissapointingly as of late, what do you think it would take for him to have another pro-bowl season? It seems, like you said, that he needs to work on his run-stopping, but maybe it is because of his lack of bulk that he is struggling against the run as a defensive end.

Also what role will Roderick Green play in this year's defense? Will he be anything more than a situational pass rusher?

You have to be a real no life having idiot to come read a column from a media person you all claim to hate so much, then take the time to respond time and time again, basically, your like semi-retarded puppets. if you hate the guy so much STOP POSTING HERE geniuses!
