Minor leaguers take the field at Camden Yards

Fifteen Orioles minor leaguers, including 2010 first-round draft pick Manny Machado, are participating in the team's two-week fall instructional program at Camden Yards.

The workouts, which are being held in Baltimore due to ongoing renovations at both Ed Smith Stadium and Twin Lakes Park in Sarasota, Fla., started on Sept. 20 and are expected to continue until Oct. 2.

"It starts at 7:30 a.m. and goes until 2:30 or 3 o'clock [in the afternoon] every day," Orioles director of player development John Stockstill said. "There's work indoors. There's work going on at all times."

The purpose of the fall program -- to give the minor leaguers an opportunity for extra work on the fundamentals, including hitting, fielding and base running -- hasn't changed because of the location, but a lot of the players notice a difference in holding the practices at a major league park.

"Other teams are doing [instructional programs] at their spring training facility and we're out here on a major league field, taking [batting practice], catching ground balls," Machado said. "It's a great opportunity."

Other players included in the program are: infielders Mychal Givens, L.J. Hoes, Connor Narron, Jonathan Schoop and Tyler Townsend; outfielders Xavier Avery, Glynn Davis, Kyle Hudson, Trent Mummey and Brenden Webb; and catchers Riley Hornback, Tanner Murphy, Michael Ohlman and Wynston Sawyer.

Erbe scratched from rehab start at Aberdeen

Orioles minor league right-hander Brandon Erbe's forgettable season keeps getting worse.

Erbe was scratched from tonight's scheduled injury rehab start for Single-A Aberdeen due to tenderness in his throwing arm, the team announced earlier today.

The 22-year-old was 0-10 with a 5.73 ERA in 14 starts with Triple-A Norfolk before going on the disabled list with shoulder soreness in June. Erbe gave up two runs, two walks and one hit in three innings during his first rehab appearance with the IronBirds against Hudson Valley last Saturday at Ripken Stadium.

Right-hander Bruno Sanchez will start in Erbe's place for Aberdeen.

Report: Orioles sign 16-year-old Dominican prospect

It looks like the Orioles are taking a dive into the Dominican Republic talent pool.

According to Baseball America's Ben Badler, the Orioles have signed 16-year-old Dominican third baseman Hector Veloz for $300,000. Badler cites Veloz's trainer, Victor Baez, for the information.

Here is more information from the Baseball America report:

The bonus is a franchise record for an amateur player signed out of the Dominican Republic and is believed to be a franchise record for all of Latin America. A club official did not return calls seeking comment.

At 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, Veloz, who is from Santiago, stands out for his plus raw power from the right side, though he has been inconsistent hitting in games. He also shows an above-average arm and solid hands at third base.

The deal is not official yet, as Veloz still has to clear his age and identity check and pass a drug test, which in his case could get interesting. Veloz has also already tested positive for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol when he took a drug test in mid-May as part of Major League Baseball's new registration program for 40 of the top Dominican prospects in this year's international signing class.

As it mentions in the article, Veloz tested positive for steroids in May.

Last month, Baez told Baseball America that the steroid use was unintentional because the drug came from an over-the-counter supplement that did not list it as one of the ingredients.

Rocky night for Pie, Gonzalez in Bowie

With Orioles players Felix Pie and Michael Gonzalez participating in injury rehabilitation assignments with Double-A Bowie, there was an extra level of excitement from fans to kick off the holiday weekend at Prince George's Stadium.

Pie, Gonzalez and the rest of the Baysox didn't give the crowd much reason to celebrate, however, as Akron cruised to a 9-4 victory in the second game of the series.

In his first at-bat, Pie showed some solid plate discipline as he walked on six pitches.

Pie struck out in each of his next two at-bats, however. In the fifth, he was punched out on four pitches.

Akron second baseman Jason Kipnis robbed Pie of a single up the middle in the seventh as he ranged well to his right and threw out the Orioles outfielder by a step at first base.

With one run already scored in the bottom of the ninth, Pie tripled into the left-center field gap in his last at-bat to finish 1-for-4 with a walk. He was stranded at third base as third baseman Ryan Adams flied out to end the game.

Gonzalez entered with two outs in the fifth inning after Baysox starting pitcher Nathan Nery allowed five consecutive hits -- a home run, two doubles and two singles.

With a runner on second base, Gonzalez forced Akron shortstop Cristo Arnal to fly out to deep center field to end the threat in the fifth.

In the sixth, Gonzalez retired the first two batters before ending his night on a bad note.

Aeros third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall hit a long home run over the first layer of signs in right-center field. Chisenhall fouled off four consecutive pitches before unleashing the bomb against Gonzalez.

According to the radar gun at the ballpark -- which isn't always accurate, by the way -- Gonzalez was in the upper 80s for the most part with his fastball. He touched 91.

Another radar gun had Gonzalez between 90-93 during the outing.

Overall, Gonzalez threw 15 of his 20 pitches for strikes.

I thought Gonzalez looked OK, for what it's worth, but he looks far from the dominating closer that the Orioles envisioned when they signed him as a free agent in the offseason.

Frederick's Moreau talks about his no-hitter

Single-A Frederick's Nathan Moreau pitched the second no-hitter of the season for an Orioles minor leaguer in the Keys' 7-0 win over Salem on Wednesday, following Chris Tillman's gem for Norfolk on April 28.

Moreau, 23, was the organization's Pitcher of the Month in May. He was 2-3 with a 2.98 ERA in 16 games (seven starts) for Single-A Delmarva before being promoted to Frederick on the day of the no-hitter.

"I started thinking about it in the fourth [inning]," Moreau said. "There had been a few times this year at Delmarva where I had gone four no-hit innings, and somehow I always messed it up.

"It kind of just got into my head then to take it one inning at a time," he added.

Moreau's accomplishment, which was the first no-hitter for the Keys since Brandon Erbe and two relievers combined to complete the feat in August 2008, happened after an active 24 hours for the young left-hander.

"I found out [Tuesday] after our game [with Single-A Delmarva at West Virginia] that I was coming up," Moreau said. "I got to Salem about 2 o'clock in the afternoon [Wednesday], stopped at the hotel briefly, got my baseball gear and headed to the field."

Moreau credited the Keys' defense, especially the three outfielders, for preserving the no-hitter.

"Kyle Hudson made two great catches in the outfield early in the game," Moreau said. "Ronnie Welty made a catch jumping at the wall in right field, and Xavier Avery tracked down a really good ball right at the wall."

In order to replace Zagone with the Keys, left-hander Nathan Moreau was promoted from Delmarva. In case you missed it, Moreau threw a no-hitter in his debut with Frederick.

Finally, right-hander Brian Parker was sent from the IronBirds to Delmarva.

Tides starting pitcher Chris Tillman and outfielder Jeff Salazar were both selected to represent the Orioles' affiliate in the Triple-A All-Star Game.

The game between the Rookie-level GCL Orioles and GCL Red Sox was postponed.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Charlotte Knights 2, Norfolk Tides 1 (Box score)

Recap: Starting pitcher Troy Patton (5-9) gave up two runs (one earned) and five hits in six innings as the Tides suffered a 2-1 setback against Charlotte.

O's prospect Moreau throws no-hitter

Orioles pitching prospect Nathan Moreau was promoted to the High-A Frederick Keys from the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds on Wednesday, and he celebrated his ascension in a big way.

Starting on the road against the Salem Red Sox, Moreau thew a no-hitter, striking out six while walking none in Frederick's 7-0 victory. If not for two Keys errors, including a throwing miscue by the 23-year-old left-hander, he would have completed the perfect game.

Moreau, whom the Orioles drafted in the 11th round of the 2008 MLB draft out of Georgia, was 2-3 with a 2.98 ERA in 16 games (seven starts) for the Shorebirds before being sent to Frederick. He struck out 70 batters in 60 1/3 innings for Delmarva.

Last season, Moreau was 5-3 with a 3.61 ERA in 20 starts for the Shorebirds. He struck out 95 batters and issued 43 walks in 87 1/3 innings in 2009.

It was the first individual, nine-inning no-hitter in the Carolina League in six years. It was the Keys' first nine-inning no-hitter since July 3, 2003 when John Maine threw one against Winston-Salem.

Also, the Shorebirds placed third baseman Tyler Stampone on the disabled list with a left hand injury and transferred infielder Michael Mooney to Delmarva from the GCL Orioles in order to take his roster spot.

Orioles release two minor leaguers

The Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds announced a series of roster moves earlier today, including the release of left-handed pitcher Tony Butler from the organization.

Acquired along with Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, Kam Mickolio and George Sherrill, Butler was the only player in the February 2008 trade that sent Erik Bedard to the Seattle Mariners who didn't contribute for the Orioles in the major leagues.

Butler was 1-4 with a 7.66 ERA in 12 games (eight starts) for Delmarva this season. He struggled with his command, walking 35 batters and allowing 60 hits in 44 2/3 innings.

The 6-foot-7, 220-pound left-hander, who was selected by the Mariners in the third round of the 2006 MLB draft, battled a shoulder injury after being acquired and never lived up to his promise.

The Orioles also released left-handed pitcher Jake Smith and added right-handers Kevin Landry and Tom Phelps to the roster of the Shorebirds from the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds.

Smith was 3-2 with a 4.54 ERA in 18 appearances for the Shorebirds this year.

Looking back at recent Orioles' first-round picks

The 2010 Major League Baseball amateur draft begins tonight at 7 p.m.

As Jeff Zrebiec wrote in today's newspaper, the Orioles are expected to choose between Texas high school right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon or Florida high school shortstop Manny Machado at No. 3.

Also, Dan Connolly wants to know who you, the Orioles fans, would choose with that selection.

Below, I've listed a quick recap of the Orioles' first-round selections since 2001. They've selected 13 players during that period, including six who've made it to the major leagues.

While we're at it, here's a photo gallery of assorted first-round picks in the team's history.

Shorebirds' Givens out 'at least 4-6 weeks'

Single-A Delmarva shortstop Mychal Givens, the team's second-round pick in last year's MLB draft, is expected to miss "at least 4-6 weeks" with a sprained left thumb, according to Orioles assistant director of player development Tripp Norton.

Givens injured the thumb in the Shorebirds' 8-4 loss to Greensboro on Tuesday, and he was placed on the disabled list Thursday. In seven games since joining Delmarva last month, the 20-year-old infielder is batting .222 (4-for-18) with four RBIs.

Norton also provided health updates on several other Orioles minor leaguers.

Single-A Frederick second baseman L.J. Hoes, who has been out of action since May 15, is recovering from mononucleosis and has started participating in light baseball activities.

Delmarva first baseman Tyler Townsend and catcher Justin Dalles are both rehabbing in Sarasota, Fla., and are expected to return to action later this month.

Dickerson named interim manager at Norfolk

With Norfolk Tides manager Gary Allenson heading to Baltimore to become the Orioles interim third-base coach, the Triple-A team needed a replacement.

Enter Bobby Dickerson, who was named the interim manager in Norfolk today.

Dickerson, 44, was the Orioles minor league infield and Latin America field coordinator this season. He is 525-462 in eight seasons as a manager in the minor leagues.

Most recently, Dickerson managed the Triple-A Iowa Cubs to a 72-72 record in 2009.

Dickerson served as the Chicago Cubs minor league infield and bunting coordinator from 2006-08, and he managed the Double-A West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx from 2002-05, where he twice led the club to the postseason. He also served as a minor league coach and manager in the Orioles' minor league system from 1993-97.

Allenson was 228-254 in three-plus seasons as Norfolk’s manager.

Rowell temporarily removed from Frederick's roster

Billy Rowell, the Orioles’ No. 1 pick (ninth overall) in the 2006 MLB draft, has been reassigned from Single-A Frederick to short-season Single-A Aberdeen’s roster.

It’s temporary. Rowell will be back with the Keys this week, perhaps this weekend.

Rowell has been dealing with a sore thumb and that, combined with an undisclosed minor disciplinary issue, predicated the reassignment.

Rowell, 21, is in his third season with Frederick, switching back to third base this year after experimenting with a move to right field in 2009.

He is batting .256 with four homers and 22 RBIs this season. But he has been in a tailspin lately, with three hits in his past 29 at-bats (.103 average).

In a corresponding move, Frederick activated shortstop Greg Miclat from the seven-day disabled list.

Minor league game recaps -- May 24

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides picked up a one-run victory over the Rochester Red Wings, and the Double-A Bowie Baysox outlasted the Harrisburg Senators in a marathon. The Single-A Frederick Keys fell to the Wilmington Blue Rocks, while the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds defeated the Hickory Crawdads.

Mychal Givens, the Orioles' second-round pick in the 2009 MLB draft, was assigned to Delmarva on Monday. He didn't play in the team's game against Hickory, however.

In order to make room for Givens with the Shorebirds, infielder Tyler Kolodny was transferred to the roster of the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds.

Also, there were four transactions for the Tides on Monday.

The team officially added left-hander Alberto Castillo back to the roster from the Orioles, and right-hander Jim Miller was added to Norfolk from Aberdeen.

Tides first baseman Michael Aubrey was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to May 23, with a right hip flexor injury, while right-hander Ross Wolf was transferred to Aberdeen.

Wolf, who is 0-2 with a 2.70 ERA in 15 appearances for Norfolk this season, is believed to be one of the relief pitchers under consideration to join the Orioles' bullpen if Koji Uehara or Alfredo Simon (or both) are placed on the disabled list Tuesday. Castillo's name has also been mentioned in the discussion.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Norfolk Tides 2, Rochester Red Wings 1 (Box score)

Recap: Starting pitcher Chris Tillman (5-4) held Rochester to one run and eight hits in six innings as the Tides grabbed a 2-1 victory at Harbor Park.

Tillman struck out seven batters and issued one walk, throwing 78 of his 117 pitches for strikes.

Norfolk third baseman Josh Bell was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and left fielder Jeff Salazar added a double and a run scored. Salazar also threw out a runner at home plate to preserve the one-run lead in the eighth inning.

Tides relief pitcher Armando Gabino tossed three scoreless innings for his first save of the season.

Designated hitter Nolan Reimold was 0-for-4 with a strikeout for Norfolk. In 10 games since his demotion, the 26-year-old outfielder is 3-for-34 (.088) with one home run and two RBIs.

Minor league game recaps -- May 23

First, I wanted to apologize for the lack of minor league updates over the past couple days. I had some technical issues with my laptop, but the problem seems to be solved -- hopefully.

One of these days I'll invest in a new computer.

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides fell to the Rochester Red Wings today, while the Double-A Bowie Baysox topped the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The Single-A Frederick Keys were edged by the Kinston Indians in extra innings, and the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds lost to the Hagerstown Suns.

Also, there have been a series of roster moves over the past few days in the organization.

Here are the final landing spots for players involved in the moves:

UTIL Miguel Abreu -- Demoted to Frederick from Bowie
RHP Ryan Berry -- Promoted to Frederick from Delmarva
RHP Zach Clark -- Transferred to Aberdeen from Bowie
RHP Jake Cowan -- Placed on disabled list at Delmarva
UTIL Paco Figueroa -- Added to roster at Norfolk
LHP Chris George -- Activated from disabled list at Norfolk
IF Mike Mooney -- Promoted to Frederick from Delmarva
RHP Kenny Moreland -- Transferred from Frederick to Delmarva

Minor league game previews -- May 21

If you're looking to catch a game tonight and don't feel like driving to Washington D.C. to watch the Orioles face the Nationals, I'd highly recommend making the trip to Prince George's Stadium in Bowie.

The Double-A Bowie Baysox take on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in former Orioles first-round pick Adam Loewen's return to the area. He's also playing a different position than he did with the Orioles, in case you weren't aware of his switch to become an outfielder.

If that's not enough, the pitching matchup is Baysox left-hander Zach Britton against Fisher Cats right-hander Kyle Drabek, the son of former Orioles right-hander Doug Drabek. Both are top 100 prospects.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Record: (18-24)

Opponent

Pawtucket Red Sox (7:15 p.m.)

Probable pitchers

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides routed the Pawtucket Red Sox, and the Double-A Bowie Baysox beat the Binghamton Mets. The Single-A Frederick Keys lost to the Potomac Nationals, while the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds were beaten by the Hagerstown Suns.

Earlier today, the Keys placed infielders L.J. Hoes and Greg Miclat on the disabled list. Hoes' move is retroactive to May 18.

As I told you earlier, Miclat injured his ankle sliding into second base last night. Hoes has been battling strep throat and hasn't played since May 15.

Score: Norfolk Tides 8, Pawtucket Red Sox 1 (Box score)

Norfolk second baseman Scott Moore was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored, while designated hitter Brandon Snyder also had two hits and three RBIs.

Shortstop Robert Andino hit a solo home run and scored twice for the Tides, and right fielder Jeff Salazar added two hits and an RBI.

It's the second injury to Miclat this season. He also broke his nose last month and spent time on the disabled list. In 26 games, the 22-year-old infielder is batting .298 with six doubles and six RBIs.

The Single-A Frederick Keys won two games against the Potomac Nationals, while the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds split a doubleheader with the West Virginia Power.

The matchup between the Double-A Bowie Baysox and Binghamton Mets was postponed due to rain. The two teams will play a doubleheader on June 8 to make up the missed contest.

Yesterday, the Baysox made a series of roster moves.

Right-hander Brandon Cooney was promoted to Bowie from the Keys, and left-hander Mike Hinckley was added to the team's roster. Left-hander Chad Thall was placed on the temporary inactive list.

Also, left-hander Brett Bordes rejoins the Keys to replace Cooney.

Shorebirds' Cowan experiencing shoulder tightness

Shorebirds starting pitcher Jake Cowan is being replaced in the rotation for the first game of tonight's doubleheader against the West Virginia Power by left-hander Nathan Moreau.

Cowan, a 10th-round selection in the 2009 MLB draft, is experiencing some shoulder tightness, according to Orioles assistant director of player development Tripp Norton.

The plan, according to Norton, is to skip Cowan's start and reevaluate him in the next couple days.

Cowan struggled in his last start, giving up six runs and nine hits in five innings against the Kannapolis Intimidators on May 12. He struck out six batters, but allowed two home runs.

In seven starts this season, Cowan is 3-1 with a 3.51 ERA. The 21-year-old right-hander has 40 strikeouts and 18 walks in 41 innings. Opponents are batting .261 against him.

Where is Mike Costanzo these days?

That question was asked to me a week ago and I now have an answer.

Costanzo, 26, signed last week with the Cincinnati Reds organization and was assigned to the Double-A Carolina Mudcats.

Costanzo was one of five players the Orioles received in the December 2007 deal with Houston for Miguel Tejada (the other four were Luke Scott and pitchers Matt Albers, Dennis Sarfate and Troy Patton).

The burly third baseman made an immediate impression with his power during spring training 2008 and had an outside chance to make the team. He didn’t, and then languished in the Orioles’ minors, batting just .202 with three homers in 82 games with Bowie and Norfolk last year.

This spring, the club released him after asking him whether he wanted to attempt to convert to pitching. He decided to stick with hitting, signed with the Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League and, after hitting .278 in 16 games, was signed by the Reds.

I caught up with Costanzo in the spring and we chatted briefly about his future. He’s a real character, a tough Philly guy with a great sense of humor. Hopefully, he can rediscover the power stroke that made him a legitimate prospect a few years ago.

O's option Hughes to Norfolk

Struggling first baseman Rhyne Hughes has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles announced the decision after Saturday's 8-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians and said a corresponding move would come Sunday.

Hughes, 26, hit .213 (10-for-47) with no home runs and four RBIs in 14 games with the Orioles. He had four hits in his first nine major league at-bats but was just 6-for-38 (.158) since his first two games in Boston.

Hughes did not play in Saturday's loss to Cleveland.

He is the first player in club history to record a hit and an RBI in each of his first three games with the Orioles.

Minor league game recaps -- May 6

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides won the first game of their series against the Toledo Mud Hens, while the Double-A Bowie Baysox fell to the Harrisburg Senators. The Single-A Frederick Keys edged the Winston-Salem Dash, and the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds inched past the Savannah Sand Gnats.

Earlier today, the Shorebirds placed catcher Justin Dalles on the disabled list with a sprained right ankle. To replace him on the roster, Delmarva added catcher Jason Stifler.

It's unclear how long Dalles will be out of action, but the Orioles are thankful the injury wasn't more serious following a collision at home plate Wednesday night. The other player involved in the play -- Savannah first baseman Sam Honeck -- reportedly suffered two broken bones in his leg.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Norfolk Tides 12, Toledo Mud Hens 7 (Box score)

Recap: Third baseman Josh Bell hit a three-run home run in the first inning as the Tides topped Toledo, 12-7, at Harbor Park.

Minor league game recaps -- May 5

The Double-A Bowie Baysox pounded the Harrisburg Senators.

The Single-A Frederick Keys and Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds both failed to score in their games against the Winston-Salem Dash and Savannah Sand Gnats, respectively.

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides didn't play tonight.

Also, earlier today, the Baysox switched the format of their website. They'll now use a similar layout to the majority of teams in Minor League Baseball, including the rest of the Orioles' full-season affiliates.

"The Baysox are really excited for the new website. I think our fans will particularly enjoy the expanded [game information] section," Tom Sedlacek, the team's communications manager, said. "It has probable pitchers, in-game scoring and promotion news."

"The new site also gives fans easier access to game stories and updates roster moves more quickly," Sedlacek added. "I think our fans are going to love it."

Bowie Baysox (AA)

Score: Bowie Baysox 7, Harrisburg Senators 1 (Box score)

Recap: Catcher Caleb Joseph was 3-for-5 with his first home run of the season and three RBIs as the Baysox topped Harrisburg, 7-1.

Despite the good game offensively, Joseph committed two throwing errors.

Bowie starting pitcher Steve Johnson (1-2) dominated the Senators to earn his first victory of the season. The 22-year-old right-hander struck out nine batters and scattered one run and four hits in seven innings.

Baysox second baseman Ryan Adams was 4-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and three runs scored, while center fielder Danny Figueroa added two hits and an RBI.

Figueroa left the game after an outfield collision with his brother, Paco, in the bottom of the sixth inning. No injury update at this time, but he was replaced by Miguel Abreu.

Left fielder Tyler Henson also collected two hits and an RBI for Bowie.

Norfolk designated hitter Josh Bell and third baseman Scott Moore each collected a home run and two RBIs, while second baseman Blake Davis added two RBIs.

Tides starting pitcher Jake Arrieta (3-1) earned the win, but it was far from a dominating performance. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed two runs, two hits, five walks and a hit batter in five innings. Arrieta struck out three batters, throwing 49 of his 92 pitches for strikes.

Tillman earns weekly honor

After throwing a no-hitter Wednesday night, Triple-A Norfolk Tides right-hander Chris Tillman earned International League Pitcher of the Week honors.

Tillman walked one hitter in the Tides' 6-0 victory over the Gwinnett Braves and another reached on an error.

In five starts for Norfolk this season, Tillman is 2-3 with a 4.05 ERA. The 22-year-old starting pitcher has 21 strikeouts and five walks in 26 2/3 innings.

It was the first nine-inning no-hitter in over three years in the league, and Norfolk's first since Dave Telgheder beat Pawtucket in May 1992.

As expected, Bergesen scratched at Norfolk

Brad Bergesen was originally listed as tonight's starter for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides in the series finale against the Gwinnett Braves, but he won't pitch.

Instead, veteran left-hander Chris George will start for the Tides.

Bergesen is expected to start tomorrow night's game for the Orioles against the Boston Red Sox at Camden Yards. There is no word on the roster move that will need to be made in order to clear a spot for the 24-year-old right-hander, but we'll hear within the next 24 hours or so.

Bergesen allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings Sunday against the Charlotte Knights during his only start for Norfolk. He struck out four batters and didn't issue any walks.

In three starts for the Orioles so far this season, Bergesen is 0-2 with a 12.19 ERA.

Quotes from Koji

Koji Uehara says he's ready to return to the Orioles after tossing a scoreless inning for the Double-A Bowie Baysox, but it's not his decision to make.

After his second injury rehabilitation appearance with the Baysox, Uehara says there are no physical issues with his injured left hamstring.

"Ideally, I could have thrown more, but what can I do?" Uehara said through interpreter Jiwon Bang.

The 35-year-old right-hander threw eight of his 13 pitches for strikes, walking one batter.

"I'm not really interested in the results," Uehara said. "I just want to make sure my hamstring feels good."

While he says his hamstring is healed, Uehara says he needs to make sure he is ready mentally in order to avoid future injuries.

"There's nothing much I can do to avoid it," Uehara said. "If I think too much, then I'm going to injure other places. I don't want to do that."

Quick inning for Koji

Orioles relief pitcher Koji Uehara encountered little trouble in the first inning against the Erie SeaWolves during his injury rehabilitation assignment for the Double-A Bowie Baysox.

The 35-year-old right-hander retired SeaWolves leadoff hitter Chris White on a weak groundout to first base before walking Erie's Wilkin Ramirez on six pitches.

Ramirez was caught stealing by Baysox catcher Phil Britton, and Uehara got SeaWolves right fielder Josh Burrus to hit a ground ball to shortstop Pedro Florimon to end the inning.

Uehara threw eight of his 13 pitches for strikes.

Koji set for morning rehab stint in Bowie

We're about 30 minutes before game time here at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie.

Orioles relief pitcher Koji Uehara is scheduled to start for the Double-A Bowie Baysox in their 11:05 a.m. matchup with the Erie SeaWolves.

In Tuesday's game against Erie, Uehara allowed one hit in one inning. The 35-year-old right-hander struck out one batter and threw 11 of his 15 pitches for strikes.

After he's done pitching, I'm going down to the clubhouse to talk to him about his performance.

Look for an update later this afternoon on Orioles Insider.

In the meantime, today's Baysox and SeaWolves lineups are listed below. Orioles prospect Zach Britton will follow Uehara in today's game.

Minor league game recaps -- April 23

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides grabbed a much-needed win over the Charlotte Knights, and the Double-A Bowie Baysox topped the Akron Aeros.

The Single-A Frederick Keys beat the Salem Red Sox, while the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds fell in extra innings to the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

There were a couple injuries involving first basemen in the Orioles' minor league system recently.

In Thursday night's game, the Keys' Joe Mahoney tweaked his hamstring while running out a ground ball. According to the team, he is day-to-day and won't go on the disabled list.

Also, Delmarva's Tyler Townsend suffered a hamstring injury Thursday and was placed on the disabled list by the team. It's unclear when he will return at this time. In order to take his place on the roster, the Shorebirds activated catcher Michael Ohlman from the DL.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Norfolk Tides 5, Charlotte Knights 3 (Box score)

Recap: Finally, Tides starting pitcher Chris Tillman (1-3) earned his first win of the season in a 5-3 victory over Charlotte.

Relief pitcher Frank Mata retired the side in order in the ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season for the Tides.

The Single-A Frederick Keys travel to meet the Potomac Nationals, and the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds wrap up their series against the Hagerstown Suns.

One tidbit to note for today's game between the Baysox and SeaWolves -- St. Paul's graduate Steve Johnson pitches for Bowie against Erie's Jon Kibler, who is a Calvert Hall alum.

Shorebirds third baseman Tyler Kolodny was selected as the South Atlantic League Player of the Week for the opening period of the season (April 8-18). The 22-year-old infielder leads the league with six home runs so far this year.

Also, there were a series of roster moves in the organization.

The Shorebirds placed catcher Justin Dalles on the disabled list after he was injured in a collision at home plate in Sunday's game against Hagerstown.

In order to replace Dalles on the roster, catcher Luis Bernardo was transferred from Frederick. It's unclear how much time Dalles will be out of action.

In order to make room for the two players, the Keys placed Greg Miclat on the disabled list with a broken nose. Jason White was added to the temporary inactive list for personal reasons.

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides held on for a victory over the Durham Bulls, and the Double-A Bowie Baysox pounded the Akron Aeros.

The Single-A Frederick Keys lost to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at Harry Grove Stadium, but the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds edged the Greensboro Grasshoppers on the road.

I was at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, so here is a link to my live updates from the Keys-Pelicans matchup.

A quick injury update -- Keys shortstop Greg Miclat, who left tonight's game after he was hit in the face on a freak play when the ball ricocheted off his foot, was diagnosed with a broken nose. He's listed as day-to-day.

Also, Keys starting pitcher Oliver Drake is likely out for at least a couple weeks with a shoulder injury that landed him on the disabled list today. Kenny Moreland is expected to take Drake's spot in the rotation.
