GM search: And so it begins ...

Everyone seems to agree that the Orioles need to waste no time in their hunt for a new general manager/VP of baseball operations, so it should come as no surprise that a subgroup of the eight-candidate list has been determined and calls have gone out to several teams for permission to contact current employees.

No one is revealing who has been contacted, but a source indicated that the first face-to-face interview could take place in Baltimore as soon as this weekend. It is not known whether the order of the interviews is going to be a significant indicator of priority, but there is some reason to believe one of the first interviewees could be Arizona Diamondbacks vice president for scouting and player development Jerry Dipoto.

Keep in mind that it is not as simple as just picking someone off the list and offering that person the job. Most of the candidates on the Orioles' wish list are highly prized by their current organizations, so some names could come off the list if the original team creates added incentive to stay put. There are also contractual restrictions that could cause candidates to refuse an interview.

Dipoto is a 43-year-old former major league pitcher whose front office career began as a scout for the Boston Red Sox in 2003. He was hired to be director of scouting for the Colorado Rockies in 2005, then joined Josh Byrnes in the front office of the Diamondbacks as director of scouting and player development. When Byrnes was fired, Dipoto was appointed interim GM until the D-backs hired Kevin Towers, then returned to his former position with the team.

Through a process of elimination, it's probably fair to conclude that the Orioles are focused on an initial group that includes DiPoto, Rangers assistant GM Thad Levine and Tigers assistant GM Al Avila, since no contact had been made as of Thursday afternoon to the other five names on the Orioles' eight-candidate search list.

Those other potential candidates include Jays assistant GM Tony LaCava, Marlins assistant GM Dan Jennings, Dodgers execs De Jon Watson and Logan White, and former Angels GM Tony Reagins.

If Avila and Levine are among the top three candidates, that would explain why DiPoto, below, might come in first, since the Avila's Tigers and Levine's Rangers are playing in the American League Championship Series.

I think the general attitude of the fan base is who cares. Just get somebody in there who can fix it already. 14 years in a row with a losing record is rediculous and inexcusable. Peter Angelos should be embarrassed. It gets harder to root for the team every year. The Nats look better and better every day. Fix it already!

Ditto J. P. {What he said.}

His resume, and big league experience, as a pitcher!, seems ideal. But why would a young guy in his first GM position automatically be made VP?

J.P.,
Who cares? I care big time. The guy calling the shots of my team means a lot to me. One other thing I will always be an O's fan. Not a nats fan or any other team for that matter.
Dipoto sounds like a solid addition though I would love Lacava

well jordan is gone, so my wish of seeing him and his scouts in a pay-per-view cage match to the death with the stockstills and the other buffooons in the player-non-development department is never going to happen.

Whoever they hire better have the sack, as his first order of business, to sack the sacks of deadwood and non-performers that litter this organization from top to bottom.

Someone will have to do the thing that AM could not or would not do-clean house.

When you think about it, if you gave the owner and FO of the Tampa Rays a 100 million dollar payroll, and a scouting and player development budget at least the size of their current, do you think that they could manage to field a winning team year in and year out? That guy that owns the Rays would buy the Os, even in the sorry shape that they're in now, in a heartbeat. A great baseball town, beautiful stadium, a cable network, and a fan base hungry for a winner.

Agree with J.P. The Orioles are in a constant state of "rebuilding", and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight. They need better representation in the Asian and Latino markets. Their player development system itself needs development...they seem to have more great "prospects" who turn out to be complete busts than any team in the majors. And with few exceptions, their "plan" for rebuilding involves signing on free agents whose value is diminishing, or they're hoping to "get lucky" with unknowns. Not sure how much more the fans can take. Attendance is at an all-time low not because of the Nats, but because the Orioles seem completely unable to put a winning product on the field. Pathetic.

Peter,

One thing I haven't seen mentioned one way or another regarding the hiring of a new GM is what part, if any, Andy MacPhail will have in the process of selecting his successor.

He is still in the Orioles' front office until the end of the month, as I understand it? If so, it would seem his input could be invaluable. Do you know anything in this regard?

Just what we need is a Rookie GM. We got one in the White House and you know how well thats worked out.

--

Just a thought, politics aside: Isn't every newly sitting president a rookie -- besides Grover Cleveland?
And Dipoto has been an interim GM, for the record.

The "nats" aren't in the AL east chief.

Definitely would love to see this guy running the show in the Warehouse! Several of the other candidates impress me as well, but Dipoto seems as promising as any. His relative youth would nicely complement Buck's veteran experience in the dugout... not unlike Epstein and Francona, or Jon Daniels and Ron Washington.

J.P.
Peter Angelos doesn't care about the team. All he cares about is money. As long as the Orioles turn a profit, he could care less about the product that is being put on the field.

Just as I figured!! They want a young GM who has not held a GM position before. The lack of experience will keep his ego at bay, and he will be more receptive to the orders he receives from the real GM.....Buck Showalter.

He isn't over 50. Cross him off the list.

Well, whomever they choose I'm sure it will take weeks longer than it has to, thanks to you-know-who.

This guy looks like he is still in college or maybe I am just getting old.

Same old, same old, same old.
it's obvoious that the Orioles have lost a huge chunck of their fan base. And why?
Rotten ownership by the name of Peter Angelos. How many managers? How many GM's? Wake up everyone untill Angelos sells the team it's a hopeless cause!

This won't happen, but i'd like to see Buck become GM and Field Manager, with a contract expert hired as Assistant GM.

--

You are right. Won't happen

Dipito sounds very good and is younger. Lacava I don't know much about but toronto isn't the type winner I would prefer.LEVINE, AVILA, AND OPPENHEIMER are all from winners with strong minor leagues and player developement and all are playoff teams. Maybe a new title for BUCK such as VP/MANAGER. NEW title for GM alone and quickly hire some new strong scouting and player developement people. OFFSEASON scouting of winter leagues and strong pursuit of power throwers in minor league FA could help a lot in the BP but I believe the starters will have to be trades or FA as well as FIELDER or PUJOLS or a VG 3B or DH . i WOULD PREFER A 3B to replace bells stats and fill DH from within. Concentrate the money on fielder OR pujols AND STARTING PITCHING.

It would be good to get someone with ties to the Rangers. They should be taking a better look at how the Rangers are preparing their pitchers. Ours are always breaking down. The Rangers implemented a solid offseason program when Nolan Ryan took over the club and have had very good success with their new pitchers.

No matter who gets the job he can probably do no better than the Andy did. I think Andy left because it is a daunting job and, if he listened to so many of the malcontents, a frustrating one. Theo Epstein brought the Red Sox, a team which had not been to the World Series in 86 years, or something like that, and he gets canned because the team had a bad month.
Baltimore has a major league team, which a lot of cities would like to have. The only way to try and create a team which is a perennial winner is to buy the best ballplayers available, like the Yankees, who, by the way, are sitting out and watching the play-offs and World Series from their living rooms.
Just sit tight and support the new guy, whoever he is.

I don't want Buck ANYWHERE near the GM seat, his coaching failures have come when he's had and/or wanted more player personnel power. I will say this, the list that the Orioles are choosing from is fairly impressive. The aren't looking at retreads, they are looking at what's essentially the cream of the up and coming crop. I'm posting a couple of links, Dipoto was regarded by other execs as the top up and coming GM, and he technically has GM experience as he was interim in GM after Josh Byrnes was let go. He appears to be the perfect mix of saber/scout. I would like Al Avila as well, he helped with the marlins championship teams as well.

One other thing that I would hope is that Matt Klentek gets a bigger role. Even though his role seems a big vague or broad, I have a gut feeling that he would be a good GM, so having him in a asst GM role could really help the team.

I forgot to post the links, lol

I'm impressed with the list as well. With Jordan gone and it appears the Stockstill's on the way out - it appears the cleaning of house is actually happening.

The one drawback to some of these young gun GMs coming here is the backwards organizational structure (owner -> Manager ->GM). I believe DiPoto will have his pick of spots - he wants a good situation.

Edgewater, that does bother me as well, especially since I don't view Buck as a championship manager. He's more of a "steer the ship the right way" guy to me. And one has to wonder how much will Uncle Pete trust a younger GM. But yes it looks like a total house cleaning. Which hopefully means improved player development. Because NOBODY, except for maybe Adam Jones, has become the player that we expected them to.

Dan Jennings is the new GM, Mac Siebert is the new scouting director. Deals are just about done.

First I would like to ask what does age have to do how well someone does the job. I undertstand that most believe an older person would have more experience and have a better time righting the ship, as some have eloquently stated. Discrimination is discrimination no matter what the terms. If a person can come in and have a good plan and a direct message and a great way to carry out the plan and the message I don't care if he's fresh out of high school, has three arms, 6 fingers on each hand and is near sighted. I hope you get the point I'm trying to make. Now on to the point. I hope for 2 things to happen here. I hope this process doesn't take a ridiculous amount of time and I hope that within said time they can hire the best candidate. The best candidate I believe for this job will have brass ones who will not be afraid to go into Emperor Pete's office, state his thoughts on a trade, an extension and /or a long term deal for a player and then when he is rejected not back down and come right back with it again. I could be just an eternal optimist when concerning this team but I honestly believe we are moving in the right direction and we could be closer to respectability then most people give us credit for. 14 years of losing allows people the free will to keep piling on and piling on with the,"oh they suck and will never win again" or "why care about the O's when the Ravens are doing well". I support my Orioles and I always will, no matter the scenario. A true fan sticks by their team through the good times AND the bad. I know things are not good and they need to be fixed. The system that is in there is broke and it needs to be completely torn down and a new direction needs to be implemented. We have a solid core of players that we can build around on the offensive side of the diamond. I think some of the pitchers were brought up too fast. This happened only because we are in the middle of 14 years of losing and the front office desperately wants at least that dubious distinction to end. The next GM, or whatever title they will have has an enormous task ahead of them but I will say AM has left it better then when he inherited the Syd Thrift regime. Our "confederate" money is finally being accepted and I for one believe "next year" is finally starting to become just that. It's always the darkest just before the dawn and the O's sunrise is beginning to happen.

Let's Go O's!!!

Cal Jr as GM, Bordick as third base coach and MCgregor as bull pen coach. Plain and simple
