Last night:
Now that some of the smoke has cleared after the midnight marathon at Yankee Stadium, we can take a look back at that controversial home run by Francisco Cervelli that was reviewed and confirmed by the umpiring crew in the seventh inning.
We weren't the only ones to make a Jeffrey Maier comparison. The good people at ESPN replayed that infamous Derek Jeter home run during the highlights of last night's 5-3 Yankees victory.
Manager Buck Showalter argued the call before and after the video review, and he still is wondering today what angles the umpires got to see that you didn't see on the television feed. The only replays that the Orioles and the masses got to see were from a home plate perspective, which made it difficult to judge. Still, it looked like the fan reached over the fence to contact the ball
Left fielder Matt Angle was slightly out of position when he leapt for the ball, and said today that he couldn't really tell whether it would have cleared the fence or not. Center fielder Adam Jones, who probably had the best angle on the ball, would not express an opinion on whether it would have cleared the wall, but he was sure of one thing. The fan reached into the field of play to interfere with it.
"I don't know if it would have gone out, but I do know the rules,'' Jones said. "That should have been called a double. The same thing happened in Florida (on the controversial interference call that went against Hunter Pence and the Phillies on Sunday). That should have been called a double, too, but they called it an out. No way you could assume that ball would have been caught."
Remembering 9/11
The Yankees are scheduled to hold a pregame ceremony honoring the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada took part in a news conference Wednesday morning to talk about their recollections of 9/11 and the aftermath in New York.

Comments
Saying Angle was slightly out of position is like saying it was slightly raining. He was a good 3 feet to the right of the ball. He's probably lucky there was interference ... otherwise, he would have looked like a complete fool, jumping high and having the ball hit the wall 3 feet next to him.
As for today, wow, looks like a spring training game. If an inning starts with the O's No. 6 hitter, the Yankees face a feared lineup of Davis-Adams-Hudson-Tatum-Angle. Not a a major leaguer in the bunch.

I don’t blog at the School of Roch, but I have always felt that some of the bloggers, not the blog author are half in the bag over there when they post. Especially, when someone stated this:
I think that Adams is the better 2b right now both on the field and at the plate. Andino has had a great season but, frankly, if they had not given Adams the short shrift earlier and played him all summer we might be in a better position - even of only marginally better - right now. At the very least we would likely know for sure that we do not need to spend a lot of time looking for a 2B in the off season I would love to debate some of these so called Orioles fans in a public setting and see who comes out on top. Not sure if the debate would be Lincoln/Douglas worthy, still I would love to give it a go. So let me take this time to reiterate my position of Robert Andino for “MVO”. He certainly did a good job for the O’s this year and saved Peter Angelos a lot of money by the way he filled in this season. Lastly, as for looking for a second baseman, I would seriously consider picking up Brandon Phillips if the Reds don’t pick up his option. In fact, I would do everything possible to get him to join the Orioles. I would do the same for David Wright as well, if the Mets are serious about trading him. That would be quite an infield if were to happen. Wright (3b), Hardy (SS), Phillips (2B) and Reynolds (1B). Oh and to comment on the line-up today. It’s simply madness. Madness, I tell you.One more thing Tony Tarasco did not have to leap, he was right there to make that catch. The umpire however really messed things up. He really did.
Oh and Peter, I hope your condition is well!

I'm enjoying watching Angle on the basepaths. It's about time we had a player show some aggressiveness out there. Jim Hunter said the other night that Hudson can really fly too, so hopefully that spark reminds the O's that the SB is actually an offensive weapon that can help score runs.
Monday night in the ninth they scored because of the SB, and Angle scored in the first today because of it. Let's get more guys in on the act.

If Chris Davis is on this team next year I may have to consider tendering my resignation as an Oriole fan. The guy is in a tryout for next year and can't hit the ball, let alone hit the ball out of the infield or out of the park. Who is worse, Josh Bell or Chris Davis is the only question left to answer in 2011.

Right on cue, E5
Does it get any funnier?

This team drives home the meaning of the word 'incompetence' every single time they take the field. I guess Britton has decided to pitch as badly as Burnett, and hey, let's walk the leadoff guy and see what happens. Britton, Matusz, the whole crew needs to go spend next year at Norfolk developing good habits and out pitches. Look at the Yankee lineup today...4 runs to that lineup?

nice job by davis today...glad he's off the DL showing what he can do. Sometimes I can't help but think that almost everything AM has done this year has been nothing short of a parting shot.

After watching most of last night's game, I find myself again watching this team play another game. It is almost like a compulsion. Basically, this is one of the worst Oriole teams I have ever watched. It is currently tied 4-4 in the 7th, but being of sound mind, I figure if I watch it to the end it will be a repeat of last night. Unless there is a change from top to bottom in this organization, the fan base will continue to be "slip sliding " away. We out hit the Yankees last night, but 4 of the 5 Yankee hits were homers. We had one homer, and seem to be unable to get a hit, let alone a home run with men on base. What do you think the probability of correcting that next year is? Davis, part of what we received in the trade to Texas for Koji, has struck out three times already in this game. No hope for this guy. Iam awaiting the end of the season with baited breath. I hope there will be more action in the post-season than there has been displayed on the field for O's fans during this season.

Look at that lineup for both teams - it's one of the most hideous things I've ever seen!

Pete's reply: What do you expect. They were up all night and have to travel for another day game tomorrow.

Pete, I think MLB.com is broken. It says Gregg just struck out ARod and had a three up, three down inning.
If that's true, I'm bracing for the apocalypse

Would it be fair to characterize today's strikeout total as 'a bit excessive'? Sometimes I just lose perspective, I know, but 15/30 seems a bit high to me.
Then again, I could be way wrong.

to mike who wrote-3,000 people died 10 years ago-get over it. i wonder how you or your family would feel if you or one of your family died a fiery death?
maybe you should think a little bit ,just as the steelers mendenhall, but than he was ten when the towers fell. how old were you?

Mike - could you be any more ignorant?
Posted by: Not Ignorant | September 7, 2011 5:54 PM
WOW...a golden and platinum sombrero in the same game outstanding fellas. Can you check with MLB and see if the 7 K's by Davis in less than 18 hours is an MLB record? Seven K's in 10 Ab's; is really worth letting Koji go to Texas ? Don't see much upside there
What's up with not using Fox? By far the best that came out of Norfolk. Why don't you ask Buck why the guy has not had a sniff of the field? If Bucky or whomever dislikes him that much he should let him go or play him for two weeks at DH. This season is already one to forget what's the big deal?

By the way; Stephen Strasburg (you've heard of him right? He's that rookie (real young inexperienced kid) who threw 56 pitches, 40 of them strikes, 45 of them fastballs and, guess what! He didn't allow a run OR a walk. Do you think he would come to Baltimore on his off days to, maybe, tutor our pitching staff?
Couldn't hurt.

I think "Mike" is wayne.
Think about it...a "die hard Yankee fan" who sneaks into an O's forum just to stir crap up?
He says Tarasco has no chance of catching Jeter's ball that Maier deflected...he makes comments about 9/11...etc. It's all attention seeking, so don't give it to him.
While his comments about 9/11 go well beyond the realm of sports, and are just callous and ignorant, clearly he's an insecure individual trying to draw attention to himself, so let's just not even acknowledge him.

"Mike - could you be any more ignorant? "
The irony here is that you are ignorant due to the fact that you are don't understand what the definition of 'ignorant' is, and you are misusing the word. 'Ignorant' does not mean 'rude.'

"I'm enjoying watching Angle on the basepaths. ... Hunter said the other night that Hudson can really fly too, ..."
My son could fly around the bases in Babe Ruth League. Problem was, he was not a good batter. He had to get on base before he could shine as a baserunner.
'Nuff said?

Hey Mike- You must not get out much or follow the news. 9/11 has had a dramatic effect on virtually every one else in the world...other than you of course. Those of us that travel experience this every time we step into an airport. Those of us who have family and friends in the military understand the impact of 9/11. The families and friends of the victims of 9/11 may take issue with your offensive statement. And certainly the innocent citizens in the middle east who have lost family members and seen their towns destroyed are going to have some difficulty "getting over it".
Pete, please do what you can to keep such disturbing posts off of this blog.
