Izturis to DL, Berken recalled

The Orioles placed veteran infielder Cesar Izturis (strained left groin) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled reliever Jason Berken from Triple-A Norfolk.

Izturis was just activated from the disabled list last Friday after spending nearly three months on the DL following right elbow surgery. He was playing in his second game Sunday when he strained his groin while running out a groundball.

Berken is 1-2 with a 6.27 ERA in 31 appearances for the Orioles this season. In five games (four starts) with Triple-A Norfolk, he's 0-1 with a 3.50 ERA.

NOT earthshaking news but could be signifigant if berken can produce .. IF we want to try johnson in rotation we need someone productive in that role .. At this point and with this record I would rather see J. johnson in rotation instead of MATUSZ being rushed back and prepare to shutdown britton for year to see what others might do next spring. TOO bad bundy not signed and pitching I wouldn't mind seeing him one or two starts before working his way thru system next spring. I read davis can play 3B as well or better than 1B MAYBE let him and reynolds switch and plug bell in at DH for now. I would still like fielder but know from our experience we almost never get the FA we want. I hope we get a chance to see Miclat and adams at 2B in sept. since roberts is not in sight. I like B. DAVIS on the bench because of his LH bat.. I expect REIMOLD OR A FA in LF next spring. I believe pie gone izturis gone(to coach I hope). I expect several coaching changes. I pray Andy and Jordan get it right with Bundy.. IF ANDY moves on I hope next GM will work with BUCK and more in international market.. I also hope he is a little quicker on the trigger on deals. I feel we lost out on FA sometimes moving too slow..

Nice job by Guthrie tonight. 8 hits, 6 for extra bases. Dopey Andy will rue the day he failed to trade him. If he loses every game the rest of the season, what the heck is he worth then? What good is he to the worst team in baseball even if he wins a few? Someone explain to me the reason he did not trade him. Are they going to pony up 7 million bucks next year to pay the losingest pitcher in baseball? If you're not going to make a sound baseball decision, at least make a sound business decision, and let people accuse you of that.

And Markakis is a real head case these days. I'll say that years of losing have finally beat him into the ground, I mean you just don't forget how to hit! It will be interesting to see what happens in his pre-walk year, when he can escape the insanity.

it is pretty funny though, 6 runs and the 3-6 guys are 0-14 without an RBI

2 of johnson's last 3 outings have been atrocious. At 63 innings with 55 games to go, the guy is approaching a career high in innings after pitching 26 last year.

Who wants to make jim johnson a starter?
kidding, right?

About the bloggers
A Baltimore native, Dan Connolly has been covering sports for 14 years, and baseball and the Orioles for 10 seasons, including the past six with The Sun. His first year covering baseball on a daily basis was Cal Ripken Jr.'s final season as a player. It's believed that is just a coincidence.

Steve Gould is an assistant sports editor for The Sun, overseeing Orioles coverage. The Columbia native joined The Sun as a sports copy editor in 2006 after graduating from the University of Maryland.

Peter Schmuck has been covering baseball for a lot longer than Steve Gould has been on this earth. He is now a general sports columnist, but has been a beat writer covering three major league teams (the Dodgers, Angels and Orioles) and also spent a decade as the Sun's national baseball writer.
