Simon, Atkins likely for Saturday, Sunday; lineups
At this point, it appears that Alfredo Simon will start Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox followed by Mitch Atkins in Sunday's series finale.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter didn't rule out another guy from the bullpen, like Brad Bergesen or Jason Berken, getting an opportunity, but he did say there are no plans to bring back Jeremy Guthrie on three days' rest to start Sunday.
Simon would take the spot of struggling right-hander Chris Jakubauskas.
In other news, Showalter said Cesar Izturis continues to progress and will go on a rehab assignment after the All-Star break.
Now the lineups:
ORIOLES
J.J. Hardy, SS
Nick Markakis, RF
Adam Jones, CF
Vladimir Guerrero, DH
Matt Wieters, C
Derrek Lee, 1B
Mark Reynolds, 3B

Vlad in the cleanup spot has reached the point of absurd. He has BY FAR the worst production in the 4 spot of any player in the bigs. Guys with 100 fewer ABs are right on his tail for crying out loud!
Buck Trembley for President

Jeff today is only july the 7th and we have 3 guys now in the rotation that couldn't pitch for calvert hall. Jeff what kind of professional organization do we have in this town. Andy m should actually turn in his resignation to save face for allowing this team to get to this point. It's absolutely amazing that we have gotten to this point.

Atkins will get shelled his second time out. Simon's escape reminds me of an old warren Zevon song about a man's hard times in the carribean: "Send lawyers, guns and money." I'm sure PA sent at least two out of three, and who knows, maybe all.

Jeff, good scoop!
The lovely and gracious Jim Hunter, plying his trade on the Orioles' flagship network, just said, as he closed the pre-game show, that they have no idea who is starting for the Orioles Saturday or Sunday.
Yet, here's a hard working newspaper man who finds out even before the Orioles own mouthpiece.
The only good thing about Hunter doing the pre-game is that the even lovelier and graciouser(?) but totally clueless Amber Theoharis is not doing the pre-game.
Once again, validation of my getting my Orioles news only from the Sunpapers and proof that Jim Hunter is only as relevant as his toupee and not worth my time

When Izturis comes back he should be packaged with M Gonzalez, and Pie and traded to who ever wants them. We'll take future considerations, a bag of balls, whatever. Next use the AllStar break to let the young arms catch their breath then bring them back up and tell them we are sticking with you come first place or last. Learn your last pitching lessons here. The Os won't finish above fourth place so let these guys gain the experience and learn. Oh, fire the front office and who ever is getting the players to constantly swing for the fences. Sheez.

Why is a HOT Reynolds batting 7th ?
I've been a Buck fan, but i'm beginning to believe that he is plain stubborn.

Walk the first two batters in an inning and then groove a home run pitch. Do the Orioles practice that play? This organization is positively hopeless.

O's fans everywhere!
Can we start a fund raiser to pay out the remainder of Lee's and Guerrero's contracts? These two need to be released outright.
As a side note: Does the pitching coach know how to coach?

Jeff, Dan, and Co.
Can we expect you guys, any time soon, do so an at-length piece about the state of the O's? How Andy MacPhail has failed the team from top-to-bottom? The lack of interest in the International Market? The lack of free-agent signings? The failure to grow any arms or buy any bats? The failure of ownership The failure to develop internal talent? The failure to properly scout players?
Seriously, this organization is in shambles. Who in the media here has the wherewithal to do some deep, dirty digging on how there is no light at the end of the tunnel for the O's and how the owner/gm/front office/players/etc. have all failed miserably.
Also, thank for acting civil towards posters here and not censoring comments, unlike your counterparts over at MASN.

Well, the embarrassment is nearly complete. Os fans in between Boston and New York are now met with a confusing mix of sarcasm and sympathy. We're confused, and fans of the other clubs are confused.
What can you say at this point?
Jake might be headed to Norfolk to join his brothers-in-no-arms after tonight's performance left Buck just shaking his head. What was Jake's game plan tonight? Was there a game plan tonight? If there was, I guess it had nothing to do with throwing strikes. Maybe it's me, but Jake is not striking anyone out anymore. Adair is like a dair in the headlights. This stuff is way beyond him. Divine intervention may be the only hope. Everyone, down on one knee...
Three runs off of Andrew Miller, who looked like an Oriole starter, is pretty remarkable. If remarkable can be bad. The only thing he had going for him is that he was pitching against the Orioles. If Andrew Miller were pitching against the Red Sox, he would have given up 10 runs in his 5 innings.
That first inning was vintage Orioles, circa 2010...
I know major league baseball has its hands full with the Dodgers situation, but how much trouble can it be to step in and take over one more team?
This is not good for baseball, to have teams so bad for so long. Somebody talk to the old man and see what can be done to get the club out of his hands.

Jeff,
I read this headline and started to laugh and shake my head. Simon and Atkins - wow, what progress.....

I thought after last year there is no other way to go but up. forget it, they may set the losing futility record this time. Itzuris, wow, I was hoping he was done for the year. We can have him bat clean-up. Simon starting? Lets forfeit the rest of the season, Endagered species: Baltimore Orioles.
