Matusz gives up 8 runs in 3 1/3 innings
Brian Matusz’s awful season continued with what was the statistically the worst start of his season -- runs-wise anyway.
Matusz lasted just 3 1/3 innings, chased after Jon Jay hit a three-run homer on Matusz’s 71st pitch.
He allowed eight runs on nine hits and a walk.
He gave up two homers – also a 422-foot bomb to Lance Berkman in the third – and has served up nine in his past four starts totaling 14 2/3 innings.
It was his second shortest outing this year; he lasted just 1 1/3 innings against Tampa Bay, allowing four runs in that game.
Matusz hit 90 mph with his fastball at least once on the stadium radar gun, but consistently was in the 86 to 88 range. The homers each came on 88-mph fastballs in the middle of the plate.
But he also had trouble locating his off-speed stuff. He threw 70 pitches, 46 for strikes.
Alfredo Simon entered in the fourth.

Comments
i have never been so disgusted with this team as I am right now and the handling of this situation with Matusz. This is now just flat out embarrassing, and for the dopes running this thing to let him try and pitch through this at the major league level, when the opposing players were openly questioning his health and demeanor is an outrage, and reflects badly on the organization from the top on down.
This is what baseball people do? This is how you manage a 24 yr old lefty, a former number one pick, the guy you are banking on to anchor your staff? Are these people crazy? Have they lost their minds? Do not they owe it to the team and the player to get him right so he can perform at this level.
This is just typical Oriole garbage. They should all be fired. Tomorrow.

Dan:
I hate to admit it, but I actually agree with jim66 - at least on his assessment of the situation.
There's no excuse to be running Matusz out there when clearly something is wrong. Someone's lying here. Either Matusz is not being honest about how he feels, or the team is allowing him to pitch hurt.
Even in a better-case (there's no best case with this hot mess) scenario, where his mechanics are just off, he shouldn't be out there every 5 days getting hammered. This is good for nobody, not the team, not Matusz. He needs to be shut down.
That all being said, this is utterly defeating to the O's fan. How depressing.
An aside: Great meeting you, Jeff and Pete last night at the game. Aside from all being talented writers you're all damn nice guys. Thanks.

@Jim66
Tell us how you really feel.
If Matusz isn't sent down to AAA after this performance and Tillman recalled. There should be a "Full Investigation"
Also, I think the Squirrel is going to retire from blogging. It isn't as much fun as it used to be. There used to be a lot more playful banter on everyone's part including mine. Besides, if you guys change the posting rules like MASN did, I won't be able to post anyway.
To Coin a Phrase from Gary Thorne
Adieu!
PS I hear Reynolds just hit a two run home run 8 -5 now.

I agree with Jim66...I also think it is time for Richie Bancells to resign or be let go. Brian appears to be injured, and we are playing Luke Scott with a shoulder injury. I like look and hope we keep him beyond this year, but really, why are we risking him...Luke is an asset, of the Orioles he should be shut down.

lance berkman has 4 less homers than the total of the Os 3-4-5 hitters.
I just can't stop laughing at this major league folly called the Baltimore Orioles.
Does AM actually go to the games?
Does he actually say things like "teeter bad"?
Are we to believe that after 4 years that he has any clue about how to build a major league team?

Hey dan what is buck trying to prove sending this kid out there with absolutely no chance of winning. It's pathetic to see a former # 1 pick and cornerstone of this pitching staff throw 69 mph changeups and swerve balls that top out at 79. This is a total joke and another prime example of a organization ruining a prospect. This kid couldn't get calvert hall players out right now. Grow the arms and buy the bats they ought to run andy out of town on a rail car. This organization from top to bottom is pitful absolutely pitful.

Kenny, why do you hate to admit that you agree with me? I don't know, do you think I'm that far off base in my assessment of this situation and the Orioles roster as a whole?
I was never one to bash AM because i think he inherited a pretty good mess, but things have just gotten out of hand. Someone has no clue what they are doing,or has placed an inordinate amount of faith in someone or a bunch of people who have no idea how to judge talent, develop it, take care of it, and pretty much exploit it. That's what good teams do.
If you think that there is a lot good going on with the Os right now as a team, you and i are watching this debacle from totally different perspectives.

On the Reimold/LF situation, I thought Palmer's comments were telling when asked by Dempsey post-game whether he thinks Reimold deserves a chance to play. He began his response by saying "I'm not the GM, I'm not the manager...". Buck's comments seem very strange on being "bugged" by not finding at bats for Reimold but he's the manager with the line-up card. Jeff, do you think McPhail would dictate the LF platoon based on organizational issues rather then letting Buck manage and play the players he thinks gives them the best chance to win? What a joke regardless.

I think they should have sent Matusz down after the last start. Something is wrong with Brian and getting whacked every 5th day isn't going to help him.
The DPs are getting out of hand, as is Vlad in the cleanup role. I would bat Reynolds 4th because if he doesn't walk, hit a HR, he strikes, so he's not going to kill a rally by swinging at the 1st pitch. I also think Lee and Vlad need to have a couple of guys between them in the lineup because their lack of speed is killing the O's.
I'll probably get killed for saying this, but I think Matt should DH once a week beside from his one day off from catching. I know he is awesome behind the plate, but with the warm weather and summer ahead, he can't catch as much as he has. He benefited from the rain outs, but let him DH and have Vlad sit for one game a week. Tatum is a perfect backup because he works well with the staff and he has some pop plus he does the little things right like the bunt on Sunday which is something I am shocked that this team doesn't do more of.
I think the O's made a mistake not going after Mark Ellis. He is far better than Andino and wouldn't have cost the O's much to get from the A's. I think Buck was going to use Luke to hit for Andino, but didn't want Blake Davis at 2B in the 9th.
