Orioles avoid arbitration with Felix Pie
The Orioles have avoided arbitration and agreed to terms today on a one-year, $985,000 deal with outfielder Felix Pie.
Pie, who made $420,000 in 2010, was facing arbitration for the first time in his career.
The Orioles now have three players still facing arbitration: outfielder Luke Scott, shortstop J.J. Hardy and pitcher Jeremy Guthrie. Those players and the club officially exchange figures this afternoon. Hearings will be set up for February, but the sides can still negotiate during that time.
Pie, who turns 26 next month, batted .274 with a .305 on-base percentage, five homers and 31 RBIs in 288 at-bats. He played in just 82 games, missing a chunk of the season with an upper back injury.

I think Pie could be a very nice fit on the 2011 roster. He could play some left field and steal some bases late and things like that.

The O's have reportedly reached agreement with JJ Hardy...do you suppose they will reach agreement with Guts and Scott as well?
Hope so! Hearings aren't not fun for anyone!!
How 'bout them O's?!?

Dan, you know that Sports Illustrated feature, "Today's Sign of the Apocalypse?" Felix Pie making $15,000 short of a million bucks is that. Can you honestly say he's worth that? Honestly? Even judging by your previous explanation of service time, this astonishes me.

The Felix "Pie" of a few years ago looked fundamentally like a derailed train. The Felix "Pee-yay" of last year has shown consistent improvement. I like this move for two reasons: he's worth keeping around to see how far up he can go, and the O's gain momentum towards avoiding arbitrition for all their players. Cmon Scott and Guthrie, keep it rollin

This is a big year for Felix Pie. He's the favorite for the LF spot and has the opprotunity to prove himself as an everyday player. Also, a healthy Reimold will give him good competition.

I am glade they resigned Pei. I still think Noland has a better bat and more pop . Three more to sign , another starter and a lefty for the pen . Then I say lets go to spring training and take our chances this year .Got a good feeling this year .

Pie's upsdie far, far, far surpasses Nolan Riemold. To give him only a 1 year deal and yet persist in believing in NR is mind boggling. Pie is a potential susperstar when NR hasthe strong likilhood of being a pretty decent minor league coach.

I agree that Pie has tremendous upside, I do wonder if he'll ever reach it.
However, I do not agree that Reimold has no upside. Nolan is the classic left fielder, power, decent average and OBP and OK in the field. Baseball history has millions of Nolan Reimolds throughout its roster.
Sure he had a bad year last year, but it was on the heels of a very good first year. Face it, just about everyone in the organization had a bad year last year, from the Orioles to the second team in the Dominican Summer League, the whole franchise was one step away from imploding. Reimold got caught up in that. I suspect he'll rebound, there's no reason to think he won't.
He and Pie could be a powerful weapon, along the lines of Ayala, Roenicke, and Brother Lo.

The O's need to sign more ex-Cubs..When Pie retires, he's got a job riding in a chopper over the city doing traffic reports...His segment will be called "Pie In The Sky"

Pie had a great spring last year, and carried that into the first week of the season. Its a shame he got hurt .
Though he healed faster than projected , the nature of the injury seemed to affect his power somewhat. He also seemed less patient than he had been the previous August, which was the month that he really excelled in an O's uniform.
If he stays healthy and swings at strikes, he'll get a big raise next year.
