Patterson off the market; Jays add several former O's
The Toronto Blue Jays announced today that they have signed former Orioles outfielder Corey Patterson to a minor league deal with an invitation to big league spring training.
Patterson, 31, did a fine job for the Orioles this past season after he signed a minor league deal in late April. He hit .269 with eight homers, 32 RBIs and 21 steals in 90 games, while getting a chance to play regularly with the injury to Felix Pie and the ineffectiveness of Nolan Reimold.
The Orioles had some interest in bringing him back earlier in the offseason, but the problem was that the speedy outfielder is very similar to Pie so it doesn't make too much sense to have both on the roster. Patterson was very aware of this, which is the reason he went looking for an opportunity elsewhere.
The Blue Jays also signed former Oriole relievers Winston Abreu, Sean Hean and Mike Hinckley.

We are just trading junk pieces back and forth with toronto. no wonder we both waddle at the bottom every year.

Corey was similar to Pie but a much better base runner and much less prone to injury. Andy will always hold to the guys he brought here from his Chicago GM days.

This is nuts......CP did a good job when he came up. I don't see a log jam of young talent in the wings for backup outfielders plus you want the kids to play every day at AAA or AA anyway. Toronto gives him the same contract that would get here. Am I missing something?

Jeff Z's reply: No, the Orioles just didn't feel like they had a spot for him, and Patterson was looking for a place where he'd have a shot to make and stay on the big league club.

So when Pie, Jones and Reimold get hurt, who are we going to put in the outfield? I heard they were talking to Marcus Thames, and I guess that would help. But I think this organization has to learn something about depth, especially when you have three very injury prone outfielders. In short, I don't see where having two players like Pie was a bad thing concerning Pie is always hurt.

you know why all these guys are going up there? Buck Martinez is up there. you know the jays were asking for some inside info.

I would rather have Patterson starting in LF instead of Pie. Neither is a good option as a starter, but Patterson is certainly valuable as a utility outfielder, defensive replacement, and pinch runner. Pie is terrible, even when he is healthy. You can pencil Pie in for a mediocre BA, terrible OBP, mediocre power, mediocre base stealing, and mediocre fielding. Pie is the type of player who has a lot of potential but will never amount to anything. Furthermore, Pie has a terrible attitude and personality, while Patterson is a stand-up guy. I really wish the Orioles had resigned Patterson and dumped Pie.

Wow.
You guys are whining about losing Corey Patterson? Really?
Oh no, where are we ever going to find a .260 hitter with a .310 OBP who can steal some bases!?!?!!? (Paging Matt Angle: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=angle-001mat) What are with going to do without Corey Patterson?!?!!?!?
We're sitting here without a first baseman and the one we want clearly isn't excited about playing for us. And we certainly could use another starting pitcher as well. And you guys are upset about a fourth outfielder? Hilarious.

We lost a lot of games with Corey Patterson. We can lose a lot of games without him. So, the Blue Jays are raiding the O's for talent? That worked out so well for them before with the BJ Ryan signing.

For some unknown reason I believe Buck Showalter didn't like Patterson. Best of luck to CP; I hope he hits .750 and steals a bunch of bases against the Orioles. Also best of luck to Michael Aubrey with the Nats. In the piddly amount of time Aubrey played for the O's he did well. All that got him was a seat on the pine in the minors. Any wonder no one wants to come to Baltimore?

jim66 speaks the truth
/change "you on" to "your" and it is also a haiku
//that takes talent, jim.

as much of a breath of fresh air that Corey was last year, he is not the answer for what ails this team, I hope to see him in a Toronto uniform this year. Good luck CP

foolishness , same as pie ? cory always plays rarely hurt ,consitant dee ,great speed ,and best bunter on team. corys has always done what this team as asked , if you think this is good move youre baseball knowledge is limited . also how many orioles really enjoy playing here i know coery did. so pie gets hurt again by may what then genius ?the man just turned 30 who knows if he was just starting to peek,

Patterson had a good year for us, but in the past he had been power-happy and an undisciplined hitter. Pie has a much higher upside. He maybe hasn't been impresive yet, but certainly it makes sense to prefer him, long-term, over Patterson. I kind-of agree with commenters who'd like him for a fourth outfielder, but there probably will be at least equally attractive alternatives.

I've always liked Corey and wish him the best!
Heyman thinks Lee will go to the Nats and LaRoche will end up in Baltimore, but I still feel like Texas or Tampa will sneak in. I think the ST complex will be done before the O's sign LaRoche!
I am sure the O's want to see what Reimold can do in ST plus the Marcus Thames rumor is an interesting one. I've always thought that this guy would be a good fit for the O's, but I am not sure how serious the O's are? He's got pop and can play a lot of different positions plus I think plying at OPACY will greatly benefit him.
Felix Pie played great under Buck. I expect a big season from him. The only issue is that he is injury prone, but so is Reimold and until last year, Jones was on that list so you never know.
Jeff, will some team give Beltre a 5 year/90 mil deal that he and Boras are seeking? Beltre will always be great on defense, but how can teams not see that his best seasons come in a walk year?
..............................................................................................
Jeff Z's reply: I think teams see that. I think I saw a report somewhere that best offer Beltre was five at $70 million. He might be able to get a little more than that, but I'd be slightly surprised if his deal overwhelms that figure.

What McPhail sees in Riemold I'll never know? Oh, that's right, I forgot he's working out with Brady Anderson! Wyatt Paden is right about Patterson's bunting ability, speed, baserunning ability, defense, and HUSTLE! This guy deserves a shot to play with a MLB team, too bad it's not us.

Just more of an opening for Reimold. I liked Patterson, but fielding well, not the best for a leftfielder last year - .960
Pie was .994 last year
Reimold - .977 last year and .974 career
Scott - 1.000 last year and .992 career
With or without Thames, this was a no-brainer.

Love CP, but he would really be a fifth (not a fourth) outfielder with Pie, Reimold, Jones, and Markakis. Pie and Reimold both have upside potential. CP doesn't. The club has got to try and develop the younger players.
Posted by: Dave T | December 21, 2010 3:12 PM
Pie is 6 years younger, has a higher avg, OBP, and SLG. He may be injury-prone but his upside is much higher than C-Pat. With C-Pat we know what we'd get, but Pie still has room for improvement. This is definitely a good move. If we need another outfielder later, we should be able to find one as good as Patterson.

HowdyDuty
Do you have a problem with reading comprehension? You state that all Aubrey got for his hard work with the Orioles was a seat on the pine in the minors.
So im guessing you glossed over the part where it was stated that Aubrey was signed to a MINOR LEAGUE DEAL. Do you get that? Do you understand now?
Seriously it seems that you guys would rather just complain to complain the facts and truth be damned.

Don't have to watch Patterson butcher any more fly balls this year. Great!
Posted by: CurlyC | December 21, 2010 3:38 PM
What the heck is the LaRoche holdup anyways? Reports are that the O's offer is 3 years 21 million, yet the Sun seems to think Adam and his agent are waiting for that elusive three year deal.
Also, it appears the O's are asking for medical reports on one Freddy Garcia. Great, just what we need. Another Rick Helling, Pat Hentgen, Doub Drabek - esque player who is well past his prime, with nothing but an inflated ERA to offer his next team. With that mindset, we should go after Bartolo Colon (I hear he is throwing 89-90 mph in winter ball!)

At least Corey Patterson has baseball instincts and insight. He is a smart player that plays hard and was hurt seldom. He knew what to do as a play unfolded, offensively and defensively. Pie, on the other hand is "the worst 5 tool player ever". Terrible baseball instincts. He is a very talented athlete who appears to have risen to the level of his incompetence. Since we're stuck with him I sincerely hope he learned a lot in winter ball and improved his feel for the game.

This is about the fifth OFer, not the fourth. Markakis, Jones, Reimold, Pie, Scott...
Ok, the sixth outfielder.
When the O's need an outfielder who can bunt, run, play great D and put up a .310 OBP, they've got Matt Angle. And unlike Patterson, the O's can stash Angle at Norfolk.
There's plenty to complain about with the O's, but losing Corey Patterson is way down on the list.
Posted by: PhilF | December 21, 2010 4:43 PM
We needed him for depth. Unless the O's can find a great spot starter for the OF who can come in when Pie and Jones get hurt (which they undoubtedly will), I don't see how this helps.
Create room for Reimold?
Pleeez.

Don't fret, the O's can always resign Patterson after he is released by the BJs.

Now, regarding first base...
Posted by: DaveinMD | December 22, 2010 9:50 AM
Pie is well beyond the age of having an upside. he's been playing organized ball for 10 years at least and still doesn't have a feel for stealing bases. He's not and never will be a run producer either from a baserunning or rbi standpoint. This is a failed McPhail experiment he won't let go of.
Patterson is a better all around polished player than pie.
