Talking non-tenders -- Albers and Theriot edition

Thursday night at midnight is the deadline for not tendering contracts to players facing arbitration.

The Orioles have six players that fit that category: pitchers Matt Albers, Jeremy Guthrie and Jim Johnson and hitters Adam Jones, Felix Pie and Luke Scott.

The only one who possibly could be non-tendered is Albers, who made $680,000 last year and went 5-3 with a 4.52 ERA in 62 relief appearances. As of today, the Orioles haven’t decided whether to offer the stocky, 27-year-old right-hander arbitration or allow him to become a free agent. All the others are expected to be offered arbitration, with the hopes the club can reach agreements with them before hearings are needed.

Albers is seemingly always on the bubble, but he ends up pitching just well enough to keep a job. When his pitches are sinking, he can be extremely effective, as evidenced by a 2.70 ERA in nine May games and a 1.93 ERA in 10 July games in 2010.

The problem, of course, is his inconsistency. His ERA in the other 2010 months: 6.75 in April, 6.94 in June, 5.40 in August and 4.80 in September/October.

The Orioles will be scouring the non-tender list Thursday night/Friday morning. Since they have money to spend, it’s not a bad way to grab solid players who have gotten too expensive for their previous teams. That’s how the Orioles got Ty Wigginton before the 2009 season, and considering he was their lone 2010 All-Star, it worked out pretty well for them.

Two potential non-tender candidates that we know interest the Orioles are shortstops Jason Bartlett of Tampa Bay and J.J. Hardy of Minnesota. But I have been told that it is unlikely either is non-tendered. Instead, the Rays and Twins are expected to tender them contracts and then continue to pursue trade possibilities.

Another name to consider, however, is Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Ryan Theriot. He was primarily a shortstop before last season, when he was switched to second base by the Chicago Cubs and then dealt to the Dodgers.

With the Dodgers reportedly signing Juan Uribe to a three-year deal, Theriot’s days with the Dodgers seem numbered.

And that could raise the eyebrows of the Orioles. Yes, Theriot is a former Cub and has connections to Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail and player development director John Stockstill. He would be a fine utility infielder and good insurance at shortstop if the Orioles can’t fill that opening or at second base if Brian Roberts is hurt again in 2011.

In five seasons, Theriot has hit .284 with a .348 on-base percentage and a .356 slugging percentage. He has stolen at least 20 bases in each of his past four seasons.

There’s nothing official on Theriot, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Orioles kick those tires if the Dodgers let him go.

I've always been a fan of JJ Hardy and Ryan Theriot. Always said I'd love to see them an Orioles uniform. Now BOTH are contenders for next year's roster. I love it!

Bill, I am reluctant to break this to you, but will do so because it's almost impossible for those two players you speak of to coexist.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/theriry01.shtml

Your boy Ryan plays shortstop, according to Baseball Ref, the majority of the time. JJ Hardy plays shortstop all the time. Now unless the Orioles trade Brian Roberts, which I highly doubt. Hardy and Theriot cannot coexist. So it makes your above statement kinda senseless! So if you truly loved both players, you would have known that already. I think someone needs to cut back his intake of AM Kool Aid, it's affecting your common sense!

Wow, Dan, I hadn't even thought about Ryan Theriot. If nothing else, he would be a better utility guy than Lugo. He also has a knack for stirring things up, hence his nick name on the Northside, "The Riot." Clever people, those Chicagoans.

The non-tender period is why you never really see a lot of movement until the winter meetings. There are always bargains out there, some good players are usually available, and some could be had at a decent wage.

I like Albers, he fills a role in the bullpen. I'm sure they've talked to him about losing some of that "stock"(I hear Medifast works) but he does have a power arm, is only 27 and throws in the mid 90s with movement, when he's on. You can never have enough bullpen types.

If someone put a Cubs hat on a gatorade cooler, the Orioles would try to sign it.

I agree with Bill on both JJ Hardy and Ryan Theriot. With the Twins winning the rights for the Japanese SS, I doubt they will keep Hardy so maybe a trade can be reached for someone other than Hernandez or Berken. I know Berken is hurt, but he could have been on the All Star team instead of Wiggy so I am not to keen on giving him up so easily.

Theriot is all hustle all the time so I would love to see him as the super sub for the O's.

Dan, do you know if the O's have interest in Brian Fuentes? He's a guy who can close and setup.

Lay off the Kool Aid Bill! - Ever heard of a utility player?

If we got both Hardy and Theriot they would co-exist fine and dandy.

Hardy would start and play about 90% of the time. Theriot would be the sub for Hardy and Roberts, pinch-run, pinch hit and probably be sponsored by Ed Norris' show.

What were you thinking?

I will tell you exactly what I was thinking!

"The Riot" since 2007 has played an average of 150 games. Here his stats again for your reading enjoyment!

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/theriry01.shtml

Now my question to you! Why would a guy who has played quite a bit in the past few years, suddenly would want to ride the Pine for the O's, hmmmmm?

Best way for O's to continue building chemistry is to respect their own talent: (i.e., Albers, D. Hernandez, Andino.) Add a shortstop, a corner infielder or 2 and a pitcher or 2 for the short run (unless they can steal a Beltre or Soriano from their own division), but don't forget what a disaster Millwood, Tejada and Atkins were last year. I'd rather stay in-house with improving young talent than bring in also-rans.

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Rays are moving closer to dealing Jason Bartlett. Any reason to believe that the O's could be close to making a deal for Bartlett?

http://mlbbuzz.yardbarker.com/blog/mlbbuzz/interest_in_rays_bartlett_intensifying/3698228?new_post=true

It is becoming clear the orioles best chance to improve might not be at the corners but SS,, I am convinced they could get fielder if they want to pay him with some of the young arms they have plus cash.. But I don't know if there would be enough left to get reynolds at 3B.. But believe they would have enough to sign uhara and Webb..

Lay off the kool aide bill,

someone needs to take a nap. Would you speak to someone like that if they were in the same room with you?

Bill simply said he liked the two players mentioned in the article. He did not say they had to co-exist. Your bity little mind added that as you tried to read the post.

what is wrong with people?

go mcphail another x cub in theriot go get him boy!albers is junk dump him to cubs

Theroit would displace Robert Andino.
We do not need anyone to do that. Andino's hitting is beginning to come into it's own.
Wigginton is our super-sub. Re-sign him.
I still say either J.J. Hardy OR Jason Bartlett are downgrades from Cesar Izturis. There is absolutely no explanation for all the talk about either one other than they are both great white hopes. RE-SIGN CESAR !!!!

I'll tell you what I'm thinking...

If a guy is signed to a contract then he sure will ride pine regardless of what he wants to do. Happens to a lot of players. I sure hope no one wants to ride pine for the O's, but you can only play 9 at a time.

Is there a big difference from Izzy to Theriot? Why not figure out 5 players to send to the Mets for Reyes. Reimold, Patton, Tillman or Arrieta, Berken and 2 A or AA guys

Hey silly commenter with a silly name:

Where do utility players come from? From former starters. Do you think anybody enters pro ball hoping to be a sub?

Players like Ryan Theriot, if they aren't offered a starting job by any team, generally find themselves happy to be in the major leagues.

As an example, I'll bet Cesar Izturis will be totally happy if somebody signs him to be a utility player next year -- assuming nobody signs him to be their starting SS.

Theriot is a terrible option.

Sigs, are you serious on trading tillman and arrietta and berken and reimold for reyes? Reyes is not worth that. Maybe Ill give reimold and arrietta but you cant throw away all that pitching depth for a mediocre ss with health issues.

Well this silly commentator is tired of the Orioles signing silly former cubs! I don't see them trying to seek SP - Zambrano or 3b-Ramirez. They want another ultilityman. As to why who knows?
I don't see what is wrong with Andino. Maybe someone will clear it up for me?
The bigger question is when will all the silliness stop?

Lastly, what are the first words out of a baby orioles beak when first born.
Answer:
"Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep"
Cheep, Cheep, Cheep, Cheep... which slowly turns into CHEAP, CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. Which exactly what the Orioles are! CHEAP. The Fans as a whole should let Management Know it!

"CHEAP"

You know the O's Front Office is in trouble when the Pittsburgh Pirates Fan website takes McFail to task for essentially not knowing how to protect young kids on the 40 man roster.
Must be a slow news day in the Charm City...no coaches signed today???

Oh, and the PIRATES are doing such a great job?? when were they in the playoffs last?!?!?! McPhail is doing a fine job of beefing up the farm system and making some very good trades. the O's are only a few players away from contending for a playoff spot.

Pleeeeeeease do not trade Jake Arietta. This would be a major blunder. He's a bulldog

Good day--

i just read a piece about the O's and their "archaic" rule about facial hair. I agree--it may not be a signing of a top FA, however, it is important to feel comfortable and be yourself. What would Rollie Fingers be without that incredible "stache" [I know, a HOF RP].
If management cannot produce top notch talent...then give the players the "FREEDOM" to be themselves. Everyone produces better when they can be themselves--
This is america, right?

Thanks and Go O's

Also, maybe...just maybe--if the fans show up to the games--if we care like we say we do, then it could possibly "force" management to spend.
Now, we are giving them more reason to hide behind attendance figures as a possible reason NOT TO SPEND.

PASSION NEEDS TO RETURN FOR THIS TEAM FROM A FAN"S VIEW AS WELL AS MANAGEMENT"S

LET'S CONTROL WHAT WE CAN--AND SHOW UP!!!

Show Up for what exactly ISitAnywhereAtOsGames ?

I am confused, please do elucidate!

Why should the Fans show up? What would we see a Half Baked Cake again in 2011? Would Roy Hobbs be penciled in the 4 spot as well as be our #1 Pitcher? Is Pop Fisher going to be named the 7th coach for the O's after taking Rosetta Stone V3: Spanish?

I mean what do we got here?

Forget Theriot; he's a St Louis Cardinal now.

I said Arrieta OR Tillman not both. And yes I am serious about trying to make that move. Reyes and Brob at 1 2 would be deadly in any lineup. Pitching depth is awsome but when you have about 7 or 8 SP you can get rid of a few. Long term risk/reward is higher. There will come a point where we get nothing for some of these guys. If they did do something to get Reyes then let Bell play 3B and maybe grab one SP or at least 1 or 2 RP

So we’ve got Theriot, Barlett and Hardy all as potential shortstops. Theriot could also be a utility infielder. Where does that leave Wigginton? I like Wigginton as a utility guy, someone who can play any position for a few games to give guys a rest, perhaps he could DH as needed, or pinch hit.
In my humble opinion one of this teams biggest weaknesses has traditionally been a lack of depth. When your AAA players expect to play in the bigs later that year, I see a problem. They should be hoping for the opportunity to arise, but not expecting it to because some old man’s bones have gotten sore, as expected. September call ups are one thing, but the team we want to be should be fielding it’s star players in September as part of a push towards October.
I’d bet on Theriot, MacPhail seems to be in a Good Ol’ Boy network, and there’s nothing wrong with Theriot, but I like Hardy personally. In any case we need to see some movement at short soon. With Showalter calling the shots we’re so close to .500. A good signing and we are there I think.
Our starting pitching shows too much potential I’d hate to see us trade it away for Hardy or Barlett. Our bullpen is complete garbage, who would want it? If they’ll give us something for it TAKE IT!

Ha, "the stocky 27 yr old right hander.
Why not call a spade a spade?
The fat 27 yr old right hander who refused to get in to major league shape as requested.
