Steve Gould is an assistant sports editor for The Sun, overseeing Orioles coverage. The Columbia native joined The Sun as a sports copy editor in 2006 after graduating from the University of Maryland.
Peter Schmuck has been covering baseball for a lot longer than Steve Gould has been on this earth. He is now a general sports columnist, but has been a beat writer covering three major league teams (the Dodgers, Angels and Orioles) and also spent a decade as the Sun's national baseball writer. I don't like this move. The guy was the starting left fielder before he got hurt diving for a ball. He has nothing else to prove in the minors. We just threw away one of our better young players and for what? To keep some old re-run on the roster? Bad move-hope he can clear and play his way back up to the majors. Again-BAD MOVE

Dave,
I gotta disagree, with Jones, Markakis, Pie, Patterson and Riemold around Montanez was not gonna get to play here. His trade value is nil. I agree I hope he plays his way back to the majors with soem other organization, but this was a reasonable move.

oh, good grief. this guy has shown exactly no flashes in any game pie, jones, markakis are one stud outfield. scott has adjusted his game and avoided his wintry spell with the bat. reimold will be lucky to play, and you want montanez? not i.

Yes, sad but the ship has sailed on sweet LOU! I really liked him right after his triple crown AAA season but just seemed doomed to get hurt, not get to play, then not do crap when he did play etc etc etc. I hope he goes to another team and makes the O's sorry they let him go. But NO room for him here now. And we got 3+ good outfields coming up, so......

Lou Montanez WAS a minor league prospect with the Cubbies that played for Dave Trembley when he was in the Cubs organization. Was a good guy to sign to a contract and give him an opportunity to compete along with the other young guys.. He had bad luck, every time he got called up he got hurt... and he never was going to unseat Adam Jones or Markakis.. meaning he was going to battle Pie, Luke Scott, and the likes of Reimold and now patterson for playing time.

Lou has been playing very well of late in Norfolk.
Always liked his game and wish him the best moving forward.
Wish it was with the Orioles!

Too bad for Lou. Always seemed to get hurt right when a door was opening for him. I do like him a lot, and do remember the few defensive and offensive gems he showed here and there over the past couple years.
I hope it fires him up and he gets backon the 40 or makes his way where-ever there is an opportunity.

Montanez had that one great AA triple crown year but he was old for that league then..I WISH HIM WELL he should catch on somewhere But wit Markakis,Jones,Pie,Patterson, Reimold, and now the young guys Angle,Avery, and Mummey we have some OF coming on..

A"stud outfeild", huh?
Have you looked at the production of this outfeild? Let's see we have what 33 HR's combined from Nick, Adam, Felix and Corry and a batting average around .275. That's what you call a stud outfeild?
They play decent defense, not great. If this team is going to get better we certainly need better offensive production form the outfeild.
I'm not saying Lou's better than any of those guys and I like Andino a little as well, but Andino has had multiple opportunities to keep a slot on this team and hasn't done it. Also, Andino made 31 errors at Norfolk, so for me I don't know that one's better than the other at this point and I would be surprised if Andino is here for the spring.
This team will get quite a few changes over the winter, so I wouldn't get attached to any of these guys, including Nick, Felix and Corry. Jones is the only one that is safe and I know there is more than a few who would like to see him go as well, but that isn't going to happen.

Why all the requiems for Montanez? He almost certainly will not be picked up by another team and - as I understand it - will therefore be eligible to rejoin the Orioles, which he will asumedly do at once.
