Markakis gets 40th double
Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis went 12 games and 45 at-bats without a double before he connected for one tonight off Red Sox right-hander Josh Beckett with one out in the first inning.
It was his 40th double of the season, the fourth straight campaign where he reached the 40-double plateau. That's the longest stretch of consecutive 40-double seasons in franchise history.
Markakis had been tied with Brian Roberts, who had 40-double seasons from 2007 to 2009.
After the double, Markakis came around to score the Orioles' first run on Luke Scott's one-out single to right.

Flanagan and Thorne were just showing numbers comparing Weiters to Varitek at the same point in their careers. Varitek's are sadly a little better and worse yet Flanagan was saying he'd be satisfied if Weiters had the same career. Is he serious - this guy was supposed be the best hitting catcher since Johnny Bench - we were told tom expect .330/35/125 from him and now in his second season, he is hitting .208 right handed. I hate to be a downer after a fun month, but when do we start to hear whispers of B-u-s-t? He will improve, but watching his long lackluster swing it's hard to envision him ever being the hitter we expected.

Jeff:
Am I missing something? Why isn't there more interest in Koji/trading Koji? I can't imagine he'll be claimed by a non-contending team, and why couldn't they work out a trade if a contender claims him?

Why trade Koji? The focus should be on getting him signed for next year. they should offer him arbitration because with all his injuries the team would likely prevail and then if they lose him they'll get compensation that could be worth more than any trade would be at this stage. Besides now he would not even be eligible for a playoff roster.

Has the bloom worn off? Have the O's reverted to their old ways? Don't give all the credit to Lester last night. After the O's built up an early lead, they all got too eager to swing. Granted Lester is a strike-pitcher so to speak but he isn't dumb. The O's were a lot more anxious than they should have been, w/ a reasonable lead. They thought they would get Lester out of the game early but thought too soon, and too soon was what they were guilty of.
Tonight they are in the same mode. After falling behind by 5, when they came in at the bottom of the 2nd, you would think that Buck, or one of the coaches, would have said, "We need baserunners." Even if not, they players should have known the obvious.
Additionally, Brady Anderson, who might be 2nd to Palmer on knowing much about nearly every player in baseball (especially in the AL), remarked in the 1st that Diasuke doesn't throw a strike until he has to.
With that knowledge the O's would SUURELY go up to the plate taking at least a strike or 2 Balls. So Scott takes Ball 1 (as expected) then hits a ground ball to first which would have been an out except for a bad hop or error by Lowell. Then Pie took a Ball (again as expected) and then hit into a dble play.
Later, in the 4th, Markesis dbled and Wiggy took a ball then flied to right. GUYS, WE NEED BASE RUNNERS, that's plural. You get no credit for advancing Markesis to 3rd.
5th:Weiters on 2nd w/ Reimold up. Brady say that at least Reimold works the strike zone and he does using 8 pitches before striking out w/ 3 & 2 count on him.
Doesn't Buck see this as I see it or does he just want to see what they do on their own? Doesn't seem fair to the Yanks, Bays or other potential Wild Cards if Buck, as he has said, doesn't play to win.
Bergesen now imitating Lester but can the O's imitate the Red Sox batters?
