VandenHurk psyched about trade

Rick VandenHurk, the 25-year-old right-hander the Orioles received earlier today in the Will Ohman trade to the Florida Marlins, is pretty psyched about joining his new organization.

He responded to an email I sent to him -- and he even used an exclamation point to demonstrate his excitement.

Here are his comments:

"I think it's great! I'm very excited to come to the Orioles organization. I've worked with Kranny before and he knows me and knows what I've got, and that's important. And I'm excited for this opportunity."

If you wonder why anyone would be so happy to come to the Orioles, think about this: He has been up and down in the minors and majors in four different seasons with the Marlins. He has to see this as a chance to stick in the majors. And, let's face it, if he pitches well, he'll have a spot here.

Vandy, as he is known around the game, played for Orioles pitching coach Rick Kranitz in 2007 when Kranitz was the Marlins' pitching coach.

So there will be familiarity there. He also has a reputation of being a hard worker and good guy. If the Orioles can get him to exhibit more command, they may have gotten a mid-20s future major leaguer for a lefty specialist.

Oh Happy Happy.... Joy Joy.....
Andy MacPhail loves to bring in Ex-Cubs.
Now MacPhail wants to bring in Ex Kranitz Protégé’s.

Is this a weak attempt to save Kranny's Job?
Also, if he was any good why would the Marlins give him up so cheaply?

I think we would have had a better shot if we picked up Dontrelle Willis instead for free

Why do I have a feeling nothing is going to truly change around here until MacPhail leaves town for good.

Dan W, you're a squirrel.

Dan W-
Did you expect to get a surefire player in exchange for Ohman? Who are you kidding? I guess it's fun to just take stabs and cheap shots whenever ANYTHING goes down with the team that doesn't bring in an all-star caliber player. We traded Will Ohman for cryin out loud!

24 years old is the age that a baseball player lets the world know the type and quality of a player that he'll be for the rest of his career. If his ERA is around 5.00 at that age, then he probably won't turn into a 2.50 ERA pitcher 2 years later. Not impossible, but very improbable.

Why would VandenHurk and his agent think that he'd have a chance to be a starter with an ERA around 5.00 ? Knowing that this org. has its mind set on it's pitchers of the future in Britton, Arreitta, & Erbe. The only place he could ever fit, is the bullpen, and again, his ERA is around 5.00. Who wants that coming out in the 6th or 7th to blow more save opportunities.

A team should never make a move unless it makes that team better. McPhail just makes moves to make moves. One decent player for the other team's scraps.

Yeah a typical nothingburger McPhail trade hoping to throw someone else at the wall to see if they stick.

I want Showalter to take over the whole operation

Am I tired of the losing? Yes! But I am more tired of all the ire against this team and Mcphail. It was said at the beginning it was going to take some time. Let these young players develop this year and grade Mcphail on next year's free agents and team. Next year was the turning poin all along. Just remember the Tigers and Verlander from a few years ago. The O's cant compete with Boston and NY money. This is the only way to be truly competitive. The O's farm system is the highest rated it has been in years. Just relaxc this season!

The Orioles have wanted Vandy for a couple of years, but the Marlins have hesitated.
They feel they have an abundance of pitching in their system and can afford to part with him in exchange for a need they have in their bullpen right now.

This is really not very difficult to figure out.
I think it's a great move.Dinneen that

Dan W? Don't you mean brummie-paul-iago-doriang-jennifer,etc etc etc?

Get a life.

Maybe Vandy saw those throw-back uniforms and couldn't help himself from wanting to play here! I didn't catch the year or era, but I would guess about 1954 or so, when they first arrived from St. Louis.

Well, whatever and whenever they were from, they were infinitely cooler than those polyester monstrosities with the hideous cartoon bird that reared its ugly head from about the mid-1960s to late 1970s. And they clearly did wonders for Nick Markakis, both at bat and in the field.

I liked those old uniform from the '50s so much, in fact, that for awhile I thought we had hit superstitious paydirt and would be undefeated for the rest of the year - or forever - so long as we wore them.

But basic modern Orioles suckiness quickly wore down basic old but cool Orioles superstition and Buck Showalter will have one fewer rebuilding tool at his disposal. Oh well. At least we still have Vandy.
