The sound of an Orioles roster crunch
The Orioles have gotten Luke Scott, Michael Gonzalez and Kevin Millwood back.
Second baseman Brian Roberts will return soon, possibly by Friday, surely by the end of the weekend (barring another setback).
Catcher Matt Wieters can be activated Sunday, and looks like he will be. So the Orioles will have to trim at least two more players from their current roster.
The easy response is, 'Why should it matter?' They are baseball's worst team, after all. But that doesn't make the potential moves less intriguing.
To make room for Roberts, the likely scenario is that Scott Moore or Julio Lugo is removed from the roster. Since Lugo is older with less upside, he'd be an obvious candidate. But the reason the Orioles got him in March was so they could have a backup at shortstop to Cesar Izturis.
With Lugo gone, the roster would be void of another SS type, making it hard to pinch hit for Izturis or give him a rest.
Moore won't play much shortstop but has shown flashes of an upside, and he is only 26. Removing him from the roster means the organization might lose him to waivers. That'd be a calculated risk.
Honestly, the middle-infield situation, to me anyway, isn't as perplexing as what the club should do when Wieters comes back. Jake Fox could be the odd man out, but his power bat is welcomed. And he likely would get claimed on waivers.
Keep in mind, backup catcher Craig Tatum still has options. He could be demoted to Triple-A Norfolk without losing him. But Tatum has played well in Wieters' absence -- better than most of us thought he would when the Orioles chose him over Chad Moeller.
A Tatum demotion likely would be temporary -- especially if the club clears room on the 25-man roster at the trade deadline -- but it's a bad message to send to the other young players. "Play your guts out like Tatum did, but you are going down anyway. This worst team in the league can't make room for you."
Another possibility would be removing a reliever, but the bullpen is already taxed. And the perennial roster bubble guy, Matt Albers, has been the club's best reliever in July.
As Juan Samuel likes to say, these decisions often work themselves out. Trades or injuries could make the conversation moot. Still, it's fun knocking it around now.
Yeah, it might be rearranging Titanic deck chairs, but who should get the boot when Roberts and Wieters are ready to play? And why?

Comments
I haven't heard much about Corey Patterson in the trade value department, but I'm sure he's gonna have some value for a team looking for a fourth outfielder. He'll never live up to his draft status, but he is a solid player, especially for a team who will be able to bat him 9th. His OBP is not lead-off material, but he could easily bat at the bottom of a contender's order and provide them with offense and defense. To make room, I wanna see Lugo get DFA'd (stupid, stupid decisions he's made on the field. I've never liked his attitude anyway.) and Ty Wigginton or Patterson could be traded. Obviously it takes two to tango, but it'd be nice to see us get some value for these guys who aren't in the long-term plan.

Michael, interesting thoughts. I talked to an Orioles official recently who said there's not much interest in Patterson. I, too, think he'd be a good 4th OFer pinch-runner, 25th man for a contender looking to bolster its bench.

It's hard to hear all this above the din of the irony --- worst team in baseball with too many "good players"? Seriously? Maybe now is the time to totally dismiss looking for results this year and design all moves based on 2011 Spring Training.
Let's start watching next year's club starting tomorrow, and have some carry-over into next year. After all, that's what we haven't done in years. Every year we start with a new combination.
There's a word for continuing to do the same thing and expect improved results.

First, I think being the worst team in baseball is part of why the roster decisions are tough. We have so few standouts that choosing which mediocre player to send down is more difficult. I think you send down Moore (whom I don't think will get claimed, and I really don't care if he does) and send Tatum down until one of the vets gets moved before the trade deadline. It's only a week, so I really don't think it sends any kind of bad message. I think Fox would get claimed and I think he's worth keeping. The problem is that, if it's Tejada that gets traded, I am not sure that frees up a spot because you may need to bring up Bell to play third. I guess they could put Fox at first and Wiggy at third, but that will be some scary defense.

You are right Dan, these things often have a way of working themselves out. If this were mid June, that's one thing, but the club will likely be making trades in the next week anyway, so any move would be temporary.
Believe it or not, a guy like Lugo, with his middle infield versatility and his track record, a career 273 hitter, could be attractive for a club looking for middle infield depth. He has had a couple of key hits so far, plays good defense, and has speed. Plus, he's been through the pennant drive wars before, he could bring a lower level prospect. That would help solve some of the logjam.
Fox is another guy who could be helpful but it all depends on how much the Orioles figure him to be in their future.
There was an interesting piece on ESPN.com today. They suggested trading Scott and Tejada to the White Sox for SS Eduardo Escobar and Ps Luke Harrell and Jhonny Nunez. Could it happen?

who cares, they suck! if they ever start winning again, come find me, I'll be the one watching taped replays of the 1983 squad.

I agree with terpfan. If you send Tatum down, but make it absolutely clear that you're only doing it for a week - and because the other players are all out of options - and guarantee he'll be right back, I don't think that sends a wrong message. It sucks a bit for Tatum, but in a way, he'd just be taking one for the team. I do hope they reward him in some way though. I'd love to see him back as Wieters understudy next season.

Scott Moore has - oh - ever so slight strained forearm, doesn't he?
Posted by: Sudhir | July 22, 2010 1:36 PM
These guys are professionals and I think they all have an understanding that tough decisions need to be made at times. In the case of Tatum, I think he knows he's played well and I think the team would also reassure him that the move would be temporary until the trade deadline passes.

Find any kind of trade partner who will take Lugo and then get rid of him. I'd much rather see him gone than Moore. I'd prefer to see Tejada get some playing time at short, and keep Moore on the roster. When Moore was getting steady at bats he was very productive.
Posted by: James | July 22, 2010 1:48 PM
In reality, looking at this as "summer training for spring training" is logical, but tradition dictates you don't throw up your hands and say "we're done". Its not a proven marketing tool to put fannies in the seats, but it might be a novel approach. As for numbers, could Lugo be the player to be named in the original Lugo deal? I think we are stuck with him and Moore should be the guy...especially since the bonehead play on the bases the other day, put in a pinch runner to run himself out of the play...I don't think it would be a great loss. What bothers me is that whatever we give up in trades in the next 2 weeks will be in favor of the teams that are getting our guys and all we'll get back is more suspects to add to the ones we already have. We can scream about managers, coaches, players, McPhail et al, but I'm bothered by the fact that we can't seem to really evaluate talent properly.

Scott Moore was brought up as a shortstop wasn't he?
--
That's how he was signed. But he's been a third baseman most of his minor-league career.
Posted by: Keith | July 22, 2010 2:31 PM
Moore has played more corner infield positions over his minor league career so maybe the team trades Tejada or Wiggy and gives Moore the job for a week or two. If he succeedes than there is no reason to rush Bell any more than the team already has, but if he struggles then he can be removed from the roster. Don't get rid of him without giving him regular at bats first though. Also right now the team is carrying 6 outfielders with Patterson, Jones, Markakis, Pie, Scott, and Fox. If the team is getting Roberts back than they don't need Patterson to be that guy at the top of the order. Pie and Fox need to get some playing time because they are younger guys and the Orioles need to figure out if they are in the teams future plans. Scott is really the only source of power this team has right now so I feel it would better serve the team to keep him unless overwhelmed by an offer. In this scenerio I see Patterson being the odd man out and packing his bags either for AAA after he clears waivers or as a free agent looking for another gig. When Weiters comes out the disable list maybe MacPhail will have moved either Tejada or Wigginton and that will free up a roster spot. I read today that the Padres were interested in Tejada but the article said they thought he could play the outfield which I am not so sure about. Hopefully the team will have a real manager in place once August comes around, one who is smarter and doesn't call his players out when they make the right call (Tejada was right in going to the plate with that ground ball yesterday, it would have been a hard 5-4-3 double play so he man sure that a run didn't score).
Posted by: Tom | July 22, 2010 2:43 PM
I agree wh James. Give Tejada some time at short as needed--assuming he's not traded-- and send Lugo packing. He's less than a year removed from playing the position, and he can't be any more of a liability there than he is at third. I also don't see where a temporary demotion of Tatum would hurt anything. It's not like he's a future star.
Posted by: Chris Joseph | July 22, 2010 2:50 PM
Since the Padres insist on being interested in Tejada and the trade deadline is next week, I'd say get what you can in a trade for him before activating Wieters. Then you can let Moore play his natural 3rd base and see what you've got with him getting regular playing time.
Posted by: Chris in Hawaii | July 22, 2010 3:13 PM
Scott Moore picked up on waivers? Not likely, in my opinion. If they're concerned about that, trade him for a starting pitcher so the O's can stop the merry-go-round of young starters being sent to the minors.

intriguing,,,,winning teams are intriguing. This converation is hilarious
Posted by: Cereal Blogger | July 22, 2010 3:47 PM
On Sunday, DFA Ohman and Wigginton. That will give them until the deadline to trade them. If they can't find good trade partners, shame on the Orioles. Wigginton isn't hitting now and neither player will be an Oriole next year, so it's better to risk getting nothing for them than to release players who are needed either now or in the future.
Posted by: mdbdotcom | July 22, 2010 3:48 PM
Tatum is a real asset to the Orioles. It seems like he calls a far better game than Wieters. At least the O's young pitchers (the "cavalry") seem to have had their best games with Tatum behind the plate. And his hitting has been far better than expected. It might be better to send down Wieters to find his hitting stroke.

Lugo has to go. Why does Izturis need a rest? Is he our shortstop of the future? Do we need him fresh for our playoff push? Lugo is awful in the field. If we end up in need of a SS, then we can call one up. Until then, bye bye Lugo.
Fox should be the other. Yeah, he has some pop... but he isn't part of the future. Moore needs to stay because he could become a solid option on the bench.
Oh, and Wiggington shouldn't be allowed near a glove. Period. He should be deactivated from playing the field. Moore or Scott at first. Done.

Now I see why Roberts was in a hurry to get out of the minors rehab and up to the bigs. They start testing for HGH in the minors this week. Not sure if he would have been tested since he has a major league contract instead of a minor league one, but it's good timing on his part.
Posted by: Big Al | July 22, 2010 5:20 PM
Nothing against Millwood. I am sure he gave it his all and you cannot really ask more of a guy, but it appears like he is done. He just looks bad out there.
A side note, I hope we don't screw up getting a new manager. We need somebody like Buck S. who has turned around teams in the past. I don't know if I can take to many more years like the last few with fill in the name managers.
Posted by: Keith | July 22, 2010 7:34 PM
This is simple. Until you can trade Tejada, Wigginton, Scott, Patterson, Millwood, Jones (yes, I said we should look at trading Adam Jones!) and/or Guthrie, or until Gonzalez goes on the DL again (and believe me, it won't be long after he's activated), you cut Lugo loose and send Tatum down. Fox (age 27) and Moore (age 26) both have upsides. If you need to take Izturis out, you simply slide Tejada over and put Moore in.

Why is the Sun focusing on some essentially meaningless roster moves? The story is why are the Orioles dragging their feet with naming a new manager. I mean what kind of organization goes through the process of interveiwing candidates, one of whom was interviewed at least 3 times, and then not name a new manager. In my experience I have always been hired if I got to the third interview. It is clear that the O's don't actually want to hire B. Showwalter. This is obviously an extension of the plan to appear as if Angelos actually cares about building the club, without actually doing anything of significance. If the O's intention is to wait until after the season to actually bring in B. Showalter, chances are he won't be available by then. We will then hear that Showalter didn't want to come here, or some variation thereof. We will then be stuck with someone no other major league team wanted as our manager. Let's not forget that McPhail planned all along for this to be a throw away season, and then place the blame for another poor season on his fall guy, Trembly. McFool and Angelos are undoubtedly planning strategy to excuse away another lost season next year. If they bring Showalter in too soon, fans might actually expect progress next season, and the O's can't have that.

Obviously Scott Moore has to go to make room for roberts.he a liability in the field and only gets a hold of one, once in a while. They not going to expose fox to waivers so Tatum gets the short stick..If they trade Wiggy bring up Mahoney. What do they have to lose? I would also dump Patterson and bring Angle up as the evreyday LF the rest of the year and have him bat 2nd being BRob.Pie has tools but he's a lost cause on being an impact player. he could hit .350 and not be a run producer.Sign Crawford in the off season and trade Jones with a young pitcher to get a real 3rd base prosepct. Invite Machado to spring training, assuming they sign him, which i doubt incidentally.
The O's number one priority is to get some run producers in the line up.We've seen enough of a lot of these people to know they're flops.Nick and BRo bare the only 2 quality players in the line up.The rest should go one way ot another.
Trade Millwood and Guthrie for what you can get and put hernandez and berken back in the rotation.bring up Sarfate and maybe Patton to take their place in the bullpen.

There is no one on this current roster worth keeping , that is why they are in last place with the worse record in MLB,,,,,,,,,,,why would any other team want any of them, they simply stink,,,,,,,,,,they could have a roster of 50 and still be the worse team in MLB,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Posted by: spy | July 23, 2010 10:16 AM
Wayne Hicks for O's Manager - he has always had all the answers. I'm sure every move he made would be the right one. He would have been able to sign Texiera last season. He can get the Padres to trade us Heath Bell and Adrian Gonzalez for Reimold, Snyder and a bag of baseballs to be named later.
After all, he always get the job on the 3rd interview.
Posted by: Not Wayne Hicks | July 23, 2010 10:53 AM
WIGGINTON will be traded for some nobody(s) who will not be on the 40-man roster....and, while we are at it, get LUKE SCOTT and his silly grin & shades outta here....let him have his next batting slump somewhere else.
Posted by: william | July 23, 2010 12:03 PM
Why do Roberts and Wieters need to come back now? Keep Brian on his rehab assignment until he's fully evaluated and actually PROVEN that he can do everything instead of Brian saying that he THINKS there isn't anything that he can't do.
As for Wieters, put him on an actual rehab assignment for a week or 2 and see if he's fully recovered instead of bringing him up when he's stated that he's about 80-90%.
Keep them both off the roster until the trade deadline, then all of these decisions are moot. Heck it'd be the Orioles way for Roberts to come up, lose Moore via waivers and have Roberts reinjure his back the first time he slides into a bag. Then both of them are gone.

Not Wayne Hicks, since you don't have anything constructive, or even informative to say have you decided to lash out at me, and pick a fight with someone you don't even know? Ahh you are wise indeed. I would have no fear of being named O's manager, after all it is only baseball. However, as long as I would have to answer to Angelos, I don't think I would take the job. Your comments are unworthy of a reasonable person, but certainly typical for a cuckolded O's fan. After all if you don't like the fact that the O's stink, and that their poor decision making, lackluster effort in the field, penny pinching ways, and apparent disrespect for their fan base invites criticism; you can always just attack those who criticize. Unfortunately, such an attitude never accomplishes anything constructive.

It would be nice to see what a completely healthy veteran Orioles roster could accomplish in the last two months of the season - instead of a green roster that finishes an ADDITIONAL 30 games under .500. I'd keep all of the older players and send Tatum, Fox and Moore down to the minors. If a trade occurs for one of the older veterans, there would be no need to send the younger guys down.
IMHO, Tatum, Fox and Moore have not done enough to warrant keeping them on the 25 man roster.
Gotta keep people in the seats.
Send the younger guys down!

The O's are littered with "mid-level" prospects.
I'd keep solid baseball guys who contribute fired-up play and serious work ethic: Wiggy, Tejada - and Guthrie for his professional and often solid product. There is little of this on the Os. Maybe these good examples will spread to some prospects as they develop.
I look at solid players tossed by the organization over the years -- Moyer...Rhodes...Finley...guys who had (or have) great, solid careers.
It appears from the top down this organization is an awful judge of character.
Posted by: CaptiveFan | July 23, 2010 1:52 PM
waynehicks is right. These roster moves are meaningless. There hasn't been a story about the FO looking for a manager in over a week. What the he!@#$..... is going on??? The only person who is qualified to take over this team is Showalter.
HIRE BUCK SHOWALTER! DO IT BEFORE SOME OTHER TEAM REALIZES HE WANTS TO MANAGE AGAIN.
