Orioles trade Ohman to the Marlins

The Orioles have traded left-handed reliever Will Ohman to the Florida Marlins for right-handed pitcher Rick VandenHurk.

VandenHurk, 25, has pitched in two games for the Marlins this season, allowing three hits and one earned run in 1 1/3 innings. He has pitched for Florida since 2007, compiling an 8-9 record and a 5.96 ERA.

The Orioles plan to move VandenHurk into the starting rotation at Triple-A Norfolk. VandenHurk worked with Orioles pitching coach Rick Kranitz during the 2007 MLB season with the Marlins.

Josh Bell has been recalled from the Tides, and Troy Patton could be brought up to Baltimore to take Ohman's spot Sunday. Patton would give the club another left-hander in the bullpen.

Ohman appeared in 51 games for the Orioles this season, allowing 30 hits and 11 earned runs in 30 innings. He struck out 29 batters and had an ERA of 3.30.

This is the second deal the Orioles have made in the past three days. On Thursday, the club dealt third baseman Miguel Tejada to the San Diego Padres for right-handed pitcher Wynn Pelzer.

they got Rick Vandenhurk, starting pitcher, right hander....career era over 5, limited starts...

I mean im not upset at this deal since we wouldn't get much for Ohman but, still we could have done better just because, the trade deadline was near Andy shouldn't pull trigger on any deal that looks a little bit interesting. He could at least aim for someone that has control

C/C+

but now Andy has more international clout...Netherlands represent!!

Will Ohman was lightning in a bottle - the O's snagged him for nothing (was it a Rule 5 draft?). And now they've traded him for a decent prospect with some major league experience.

It was a nice move on the part of AM and the Orioles.

If Vandenhurk had control he wouldn't be as cheap as an aging lefty specialist.

MacPhail did a good job at finding a trade partner with some depth at his needs. Considering the Marlins' depth in pitching, Vandenhurk could have become a roster casualty soon, after many shots in the bigs.

If majorleague command wasn't a problem, his overall numbers would be significantly better because command is his only pockmark.

Don't the O's already have an abundance of mediocre starters? I don't see any upside to this, based on the numbers. At least Ohman usually pitched well in situational relief.

I'd like to think I'm wrong on this -- but... with NO evidence yet to the contrary over the past 13 years. Yikes...

The bullpen is a weak spot each year yet each year thet trade a good reliever. Bradford, Sherrill now Ohman. They get little in return eaCH TIME?

you know this is past the part of be insane, jake fox , another journeyman pitcher ,same every year . NEWS FLASH we have safate hoey in triple a , i just watched them , they throw 95+ , open up the swiss acounts and get prince, this is like watching management with ray charles has our number one scout> no you will never catch lighting in a bottle and one of these broken down pitchers or hitters will turn it around and do something he has never done in his baseball life >the best thing that has happened to us is getting cory patterson back cheap and at watch someone play hard .maybe we can get garrette olson back for matt albers, whats the point !@!!

A pitcher with an ERA pushing 6...in the National League. Why?

Frank M --- I agree. Unless there's just no way Ohman signs with us again next year. But if you can bring back Ohman, I think I'd rather have him in the bullpen than another mediocre starter.
