« The Bottom Line: 2010 Orioles through 95 games | Main | Roberts leading off, playing second; Markakis out »

Orioles' Roberts reinstated for tonight; he's leading off and playing 2B (updated)

This probably shouldn't come as a surprise, but the Orioles have reinstated second baseman Brian Roberts from the 60-day disabled list and he'll be batting leadoff and playing second base tonight against the Minnesota Twins.

A final decision was made earlier today. Roberts certainly has been pushing to return tonight, and now he's gotten his wish.

Roberts' addition prompted the team to designate infielder Scott Moore for assignment. That opened up both a 25-man and 40-man space for Roberts.

It figures. I was headed to Bowie to see him play tonight. Guess I'll stay home and watch instead.

I hope we find room for Jake Fox when Wieters returns. He has been a clutch player.

Wow, the O's have certainly been putting the mileage on the Norfolk-Bowie-Charm-City Circulator this season!

I'm no Scott Moore fan, but why couldn't they have dfa'd Julio Lugo instead?

Jeff Z's reply: They've said several times that they need a backup for Izturis at shortstop and they apparently don't think Moore can be that guy.

i almost said i wished it had been lugo...but does it even matter which person they get rid of?

I was heading to Bowie as well. Guess the Warehouse will squeeze that extra buck out me tonight for buying a game-day ticket. Bring back the scalp-free zone!

Lugo's been getting his hits lately (I stayed all 13 innings the other night) but I liked Moore. He just wasn't a 2d baseman. There was no room for him at 3d which is his position. I hope they keep Fox when Wieters comes back and put him at first when they trade Wigginton.

Looks like another overpriced player is dictating to management what must be done!

This franchise will never be what it once was as long as the inmates are running the asylum!

i think the next guy to get the bus ride when wieters comes off the dl is matt albers. he may have had a good july, but he hasn't set any world records otherwise..

Lugo vs Moore, I can't believe I feel compelled to post to this debate but this move makes absolutely no sense. Moore can play practically any position on the field, no he is not the future of the club but he is more valuable in his utility role than Lugo. As for giving Izturis a break at short, do we not have a 6-time all star shortstop standing 40 feet to his right. Let Tejada move over to SS every now again with Wigginton at 3rd, Scott at 1st and Roberts at 2nd. Heck, lets make things interesting and have some fun, put Bergesen and his .333 batting average at SS.

Brobber back in the lineup!

I can feel the turn around comin!

A Baltimore native, Dan Connolly has been covering sports for 14 years, and baseball and the Orioles for 10 seasons, including the past six with The Sun. His first year covering baseball on a daily basis was Cal Ripken Jr.'s final season as a player. It's believed that is just a coincidence.

Steve Gould is an assistant sports editor for The Sun, overseeing Orioles coverage. The Columbia native joined The Sun as a sports copy editor in 2006 after graduating from the University of Maryland.

Peter Schmuck has been covering baseball for a lot longer than Steve Gould has been on this earth. He is now a general sports columnist, but has been a beat writer covering three major league teams (the Dodgers, Angels and Orioles) and also spent a decade as the Sun's national baseball writer.
