Orioles' Pie won't be activated until Tuesday

The original plan was for rehabbing outfielder Felix Pie to head to Detroit today and be waiting for the rest of his teammates, who will arrive in the Motor City tonight following the Orioles' series finale today in Boston.

However, Pie wants to play one more rehab game today for Double-A Bowie, meaning he won't be activated until Tuesday.

That give either third baseman Josh Bell or reliever Frank Mata one more day of service time.

Orioles interim manager Juan Samuel said the plan is to start Felix Pie in left field and use Corey Patterson primarily as the designated hitter. Samuel said that Patterson has earned the right to remain in the lineup for now.

Samuel also said that Pie won't hit leadoff right away. He'll probably start near the bottom of the order with Patterson continuing to hit in the top spot.

Patterson has earned the leadoff spot. Pie has to prove that he belongs in the lineup.

Patterson has earned the right to stay in the lineup for now, although I agree he is better at DH if Pie is up to par in LF and at bat. I would also leave Patterson leadoff until Pie shows his bat is the same as the second half last year and this spring.. Patterson has cut down his free swinging some although he still doesn't walk much so we can give Pie time to get comfortable again.. I still would like to see the orioles young pitchers spend a day in a film room with scott mcgregor and watch some films of some videos of him throwing complete games of 60-70 pitches.. I would do it in late september to give them something to think about over the off season, and make copies for them if they were interested especially Arrietta, Tillman, Britton, Matusz, and Bergensen. If it seems to sink in to even one guy to throw quality strikes for contact it would be worth it and I would implement it on an ongoing basis in spring training for young pitchers..

Unfortunatelt they really need an extended look at bell so they know whether they need a 3rd sacker in the off season. I don't think bell's a very good prospect. he's to big and cumbersome to play third and it looks like breaking balls are going to eat him alive.

I guess Pie and Patterson in the line up at the same time is a good thing because they desperately lack team speed.Bell will get sent down but that doesn't mean Mata deserves to stay up,why not Sarfate and put Berken back in the rotation.

the orioles might as well let josh bell stay up with orioles. this can't be a better time to find out what he can and can't do. it is good to read that ty wigginton was chosen to represent the orioles at the all star game.

Josh Bell or Frank Mata?? Do you think that is even a choice? We really need a 13th pitcher on the active roster who can't pitch worth s**t.

Jeff,

Is Joel Guzman considered a major league prospect? He has hit 18 HRs for Bowie, plays 1B and 3B and can DH. He has already played a couple seasons at the AAA level.

Jeff Z's reply: No he's not. He's been around the game for a while. Just considered an organizational guy, not a prospect.
