Valentine: O's job would be 'a big challenge'
Orioles managerial candidate Bobby Valentine discussed his recent meeting with team owner Peter Angelos and president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail during a Monday appearance on ESPN Radio's The Michael Kay Show.
During the interview, Valentine told Kay: "I did go down there and I did talk with the owner (Angelos) and the general manager (MacPhail) and they have a whole lot of problems and they seem like they're really putting their heads together to try to solve them somehow, some way, [but I'm] not sure how."
When asked about whether he'd be willing to take a managerial position where it might be difficult to win, Valentine said: "It's a big challenge. I like big challenges, but I like to have some reward too, and the reward is in the standings and their standings don't look like they're going to turn around very quickly."
In 15 seasons as a major league manager with the Texas Rangers and the New York Mets, Valentine compiled a 1,117-1,072 record. He led the Mets to the World Series in 2000, and won a Japan Series title with the Chiba Lotte Marines in 2005.
Valentine also talked about how former Orioles manager Dave Trembley is viewed as an intelligent baseball person and shared this anecdote from his meeting with Angelos.
"We were talking in this meeting, and their owner there is a kind of interesting character. And he did mention that the manager they did have (Trembley) was a really nice guy and he said he liked him a lot. He looked at me and he said something like, 'And you?' I said, 'Well, Peter, I don't think either of us are going to really have people running around the country saying we're really nice guys. But we have other qualities that work for us. And he laughed at that. I think that's a good thing in an interview."

Bobby........ forget it. This team is the WORST team to ever don baseball togs!

I take it that means he won't be the next manager...
Posted by: Kevin | June 15, 2010 10:28 AM
Sounds like Bobby made a connection with Peter. Let's hope they can work something out!

It's not hard to read between the lines of what Bobby Valentine was saying. I'll sum it up......Thanks guys, but no thank!

It's fine with me if Valentine doesn't want the "challenge" of managing the Orioles. I don't think he's a good fit anyway.

Translation: No thanks! You can't make lemonade with these lemons.
Posted by: Bud | June 15, 2010 10:43 AM
God damn Angelos sell the damn team you clueless bafoon. If you want a really nice guy then hire one of the Jonas Brothers
Posted by: Willie | June 15, 2010 10:44 AM
Valentine just broke the O's code of silence. He is out of the running...count on it.
Posted by: Tim | June 15, 2010 10:45 AM
Hire him NOW!!! Pay him whatever it takes. And let him bring his own coaches, don't saddle him down with Crowley!
The Orioles are an embarrassment and something has to be done. Right now!
Posted by: Mike | June 15, 2010 10:56 AM
I don't think the Os will pick Bobby V.
He's too strong a personality and the Owner and GM want someone they can control.
I think he would be a good choice.
Posted by: LMcORF | June 15, 2010 10:56 AM
A nice guy is not what the Orioles need to instill a winning attitude, at least, in the team. We need a firebrand who will instill a "no nonsense" culture into the team.

No offense to anyone but he is just too old. Like he even said we are going to stink another 2-3 years and that is fine because we need to draft guys like Rendon a few more years to build this thing up. Plus by then you hope Bud & Co. do something to control the $$$pankees and $$$ux spending and give a team with 1/5 of the population a chance.

Wow. Talk about depressing...
Posted by: frox | June 15, 2010 11:35 AM
He's not coming. Too bad because he's the best choice. He's not a yes man, which is why Turtle and MacFail won't hire him.
Time to buy a Nationals cap. This franchise is terminal and isn't changing.
Posted by: Groundskeeper | June 15, 2010 11:50 AM
this team needs players, period. Get those and things will change
Posted by: GHTpdx | June 15, 2010 12:00 PM
It's more likely that Johnny Oates will arise than Bobby V taking this job.
Posted by: Lazarus | June 15, 2010 12:08 PM
I haven't heard Davey Johnson mentioned much, I don't know why unless his position with the nationals is too good for him to leave or he isn't interested.. Also if the orioles have a plan to get a HR hitting 1B it might look better to a manager if he sees one here to write in the lineup first..
Posted by: GRANT | June 15, 2010 12:18 PM
This team is really bad. The entire infield need to be replaced.
While the catcher is very young and seems to have defensive skills. He is not a proven hitter.
Outfield, Keep the right fielder and get rid of the rest.
Pitching has young arms but are throwers at this point not pitchers.
Team need a complete overhaul, not just a manager or a slugger.
At this point the manager does not matter, a manager can not take this team to the next level.
Posted by: billt | June 15, 2010 12:28 PM
Good call by Bobby Valentine to say away from this situation. Sadly...the Orioles will be relegated to last place for at least another 10 years. Time to look to the Washington Nationals for MLB entertainment.
Posted by: ed | June 15, 2010 12:31 PM
Read between the lines....it aint happenin. Being that Valentine even commented says it all. Forget about Bobby V, I guess we will end up with another yes man
Posted by: Cereal Blogger | June 15, 2010 12:31 PM
How strange is Angelos....man, what a jerk....."and yooooouuuu??"
Posted by: Cereal Blogger | June 15, 2010 12:33 PM
There are some good parts in the organization and we just need to find the right person with the right qualities. It sounds like Bobby V. may not be up to the challenge and that's fine he would not be on my list anyway. We need someone who has major league managerial experience. Someone that can bring in their own guys.

We are not sure how either Bobby.

Wow what a depressing post. Here are what I take away:
1) Valentine, and experienced and knowledgeable baseball man, spoke directly with Angelos and MacPhail about the current state of the Os and the plans in place. He came away recognizing that there are "a whole lot of problems" (no surprise there), but also with the impression that Angelos/MacPhail lack any kind of plan. You would have liked to have heard him say "well the Orioles are in a challenging spot but MacPhail filled me in on his plans and I think they have a good blueprint in place for success." What he said could not be farther from this.
2) Valentine isn't going near this job (he merely took the interview to get his name out for other, better positions later this year), and unless Angelos and MacPhail improve their pitch no other good manager is going to take it either. ARE YOU LISTENING, ANDY??? This means making explicit commitments around trades and BIG free agent acquisitions, it means giving a top manager candidate more in the way of comp/upside gain and organizational power, it means you have to STOP RUNNING THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES LIKE YOUR OWN PERSONAL FANTASY BASEBALL TEAM, MANAGED ON THE CHEAP.
It looks like the Os will have to give up on the criteria they've expressed (major league management experience and post-season success), because those candidates are simply not coming to the Orioles in their current state. They may need to think outside of the box and get a young up-and-comer who meets the team's needs (fundamentally strong, fiery management style, commitment to establishing a winning culture and professional discipline).

goodbye Bobby! and then there was 11.
Posted by: phil | June 15, 2010 1:04 PM
I am really surprised that so many people believe Bobby V is the answer. He may do a good job but he got to the world series once and does not have an overwhelming track record of success. Granted he is charismatic, but I am wondering if he may be a bit overated!
Posted by: Orioles Andy | June 15, 2010 1:07 PM
Actually, I read something different between the lines... I think it's more of, "Well, I'd rather not, but if you have a truck full of money, I can be bought."
Posted by: Bonzi | June 15, 2010 1:08 PM
Thanks for putting this up Dean.
It's clear that the O's need their next manager to be the firm but fair type. Someone who isn't afraid to tell it like it is and could care less about being politically correct all the time.
Is there any info on dark horse candidates who would fit that description?
Posted by: Lance | June 15, 2010 1:13 PM
Translation:
Angelos: Trembley was my kind of manager. He was a yes man. And you?
Bobby V: No, I'm not, and I will never be. See ya! I'm out, don't call me again. Peace and good luck sorting [this] out
Posted by: Mesotheliangelos | June 15, 2010 1:26 PM
Sounds like Bobby wasn't too impressed with the O's future plans to compete with the Yankees and Red Sox. I don't blame him. Even if some of these young pitchers turn out, doesn't look like the O's will be major players for top level offensive free agents any time soon.
Posted by: Tony | June 15, 2010 1:27 PM
Valentine is crazy, but he's not CRAZY !!!! He called Angelos "quite a character". We all know that he'd never come here.
Posted by: dspedden | June 15, 2010 1:30 PM
Let the record speak for its self. Its a poor organization that needs to be revamped. From ownership down to coaches, then to players. poor choice in scouting, purchase of players, and I think poor coaching. Kranitz, Crowley, and 1st and 3rd base coaches need to be replaced. Get some coaches, GM and owner with some excitement, and euthasism, and choose players that are talented and not veterans that are in the latter part of their career to help bring along the rookies. Oh thats right bring int eh cheapest players you can find with the lowest talent level and make them productive. OK,,,, now we know that does not work, lets try something different.
Posted by: Steve | June 15, 2010 1:52 PM
Why is Terry Crowley not being held to account? I love the guy, but, to quote Gordon Gecko, "If you want a friend, buy a dog". Managers have come and gone, but, Coach Crowley has been here as long as the hitting has stunk up the Yard. Is Crowley a good coach that can't get through to the team? Then what's the sense of keeping him if that's the case? I can understand isolated slumps, but the whole friggin' team at the same time? For three friggin' months? Nah.
Posted by: Randy | June 15, 2010 2:07 PM
HAHA. O's would be "a big challenge" That's Bobby's way of saying HELLLLLL NO!
Posted by: Joey | June 15, 2010 2:09 PM
Who would want to manage for an organization that refuses to do what it takes to be great. This starts at the top from Angelos down to the poor scouting, sad coaching and abysmal players! Valentine inst stupid he knows what happened to Davey Johnson and he does not want to get stuck in a situation with an owner that could care less about dishing out the money for the players that can allow this team to be great again. It doesn't matter what excuse people say, regardless of what division we are in we would flat out not stink regardless. Angelos HAS TO GO ! or no respectable manager will ever come here just like no players will come here.
I despise the Yankees and Red Sox but you have to give those organizations serious credit, they do what it takes to be WIN Now and they don't tell their fans , 2, or 3 years..etc... The few O's fans that are left are fet up with this mess !
Posted by: Fet-Up Orioles Fan | June 15, 2010 2:11 PM
Bobby Valentine's teams are all about Bobby Valentine. On the other hand, I can't think of any player I'd say deserves to be the face of the organization.
Posted by: Uncle Goose | June 15, 2010 2:28 PM
why would ANYONE want to come to this DISGRACE of a baseball team?
the orioles are a DISASTER
Posted by: Eileen | June 15, 2010 3:07 PM
Why do I have the scene from Major League playing in my head when thinking about the Orioles managerial search? You know, the one where Lou is managing the tire store and isn't sure about taking the Indians manager position?
"Can I call you back? I got a guy on the other line about some white walls."
Any job has to be better than the O's manager right now unless it comes with cases of Maalox and free appts at the JHU ulcer clinic!

What Valentine was saying was "SHOW ME THE MONEY......."
Posted by: Dennis | June 15, 2010 4:19 PM
This is bad, on an epic scale. If they keep this up, we're looking at 43-119, only one loss off the worst ever 162 game record by the EXPANSION New York Mets in 1962.
For Valentine to say it's a "Big Challenge" is an understatement, but how in the world could you do any worse? It really can't go downhill from here, can it? We're winning less than three games out of every ten, and after the last two weeks, I'm wondering when we'll win again.
I keep watching on Extra Innings, and keep waiting for signs of life, but it's horrific. The Birds are in town this weekend, so I'll get to see three games at Petco.
I'm not worried about getting good seats, there should be plenty available.

Their incompetence cannot be calculated using a base-10 math system. I heard that one of their draft picks signed w/ Starbucks to be a barista rather than be bound to the O's.

Reward Meaning "Get paid to to do this job" If Angelos and Mcphail are serious about turning things around then it means paying an established manager what their worth and a small Orioles premium. Showalter would be the perfect fit but you are going to have to pay him. Proof will be in the pudding when they hire a low rent (billed as enthusiastic) coach. Thats when I pack it in and move on to the NATS!

Here we go, they'll go get a cheap name not on the list and that nobody had ever thought of - suggestions: Lenn Sakata, Bob Bonner, Kiko Garcia, Gary Roenicke's nephew, Benny Ayala, Brook Fordyce, Dave Skaggs, Mickey Tettleton (along with Toucan Sam as a mascot), Sammy Stewart (when he's released)

Rooting for the Gnats also puts sheckels into Angelos' pocket due to the MASN situation. Peter is so proud of himself he must think he is the modern day Charlie Commiskey or even "The Judge" from the movie "The Natural".
And he has a guaranteed sell price from MLB for the O's as well.

All I have to say is HELP CAL!!!! Please come buy this team and get it back to it's winning ways. I have been an Oriole fan my entire life. I went to my first playoff game in '74 vs the A's. Something has got to change and it has to start with the owner. I don't Andy MPhail is a bad GM and don't think Dave Trembley was a bad manager but if it not working start from the top and work your way down. Maybe Cal as the majority owner can hire the dipper to manage and get some of this young talent playing up to their capabilites. Then maybe some proven pitching?
Posted by: B Salisbury | June 16, 2010 1:11 PM
I can't say I'm surprised by Bobby V's reaction, but the most alarming thing for me is how Angelos seems so heavily involved in the process.
The O's are SCREWED as long as this loser owns the team :(
Posted by: SM | June 16, 2010 4:24 PM
U don't have 2 B smater than the avaerage fan 2 know the O's need to start cleaning house from top 2 bottom. Get rid of McPhail....he recommended this disgraceful bunch of "players". Start revamping in the mnoors. As for the O's current players, pitiful exucution of basic baseball. There R not enough negative adjectives to discribe this team. Again McPhail should be held responsible for putting together this team. Time to clesan house & spend $$$ on aquality manager & coaches.

Wow he didn't beat around the bush about the Orioles. We can cross Valentine off the list. Unfortunately, it will take A LOT to get some quality OUTSIDE of the organization to manage this team. Valentines description of Angelos pretty much shows why no one wants t come here.
