Meredith reacts to demotion
The Orioles optioned struggling reliever Cla Meredith down to Triple-A Norfolk following tonight's game in order to create a roster spot for ChrisTillman, who will start tomorrow’s game.
Meredith surrendered the game-winning hits in back-to-back outings, allowing a game-ending homer to the Washington Nationals’ Josh Willingham on Sunday, and a bases-loaded clearing double to the Oakland Athletics’ Kevin Kouzmanoff on Thursday.
"It’s kind of been a weird year for me," Meredith said. "I’ve pitched here, I’ve pitched there. Get in a groove for a little bit, get in a rut. I’ve been in a rut before. I don’t panic, but I’m not the one who calls shots around here. So, I don’t know. I’m kind of at the mercy of my employer. I’m 26 years old, my arm’s very healthy as is the rest of my body and I envision pitching for a long time whether it’s here or somewhere else. I’ve learned a couple years ago, you can only control the things you can control, this is one those things I can’t really control."
After making the club with a strong spring training, Meredith was 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in 21 appearances spanning 15 innings, and had allowed at least one baserunner in eight straight outings.
"Until last week, I was getting to talk about good stuff, but that’s kind of the life of a reliever. If you are a hitter and you have a bad week, so what. When you’re a relief pitcher, it’s a little more magnified."
Asked if it's just a matter of learning just what you can control, Meredith said, 'Yeah, especially around here."

I was wrong about Cla, as I really thought he was going to have a turnaround year. Not happening...

My dad took me to my first game in the bleachers in 63. Moved to Det back to Balt to LI back to Balt to Orlando and just now SoCal. The glory was great when we had it.
However, at this point, I'm ready for a Star Trek episode where the Enterprise goes back in time and Capt Kirk changes history so the St Louis Browns move to Indianapolis instead of Baltimore.
That's right, this franchise has become such an absolute embarassment that I'm wishing it had never existed.
It's like when a parent says to the child, "It was a mistake you were even born."
Thanks, Mister Angelos, for what you have done. One day they call you the Ken Lay of sports.
When a bum like Cla Meredith is ticked off over how he has been treated, you know you have hit absolute rock bottom and are still drilling.
Please quit. Fold the franchise and go home. Just give Cla his last check so he has enough money to buy a vowel for his name.

Worst bullpen...ever.
Koji Uhera, Cla Meredith, Jim Johnson, Michael Gonzalez are all gone, hopefully never to return.
The injuries and performance show this team was not properly prepared in Spring Training.

The shame of this is when I heard that AM wwas first hired I thought that maybe there would be a transformation of the organization towards the positive and it seems with each passing day that just the opposite has happened and continues to do so.

Hey Cla: We fans are tired of you being "around here" blowing games and pitching ineffective. It's OK with us if you are not "around here" any longer.

And another one bites the dust. Well at least the bullpen didnt blow the game tonight.
Regarding Scott Moore. If he is the answer, what in the h*** is the question?
I truly believe we are looking at the worst team in Orioles history -- maybe one of the worst in the history of the major leagues

I ve watched the O s since 1960 and this is the worst team, and manager n staff ever from top to bottom a disgrace for O s fan

I believe we are looking at the worst manager in O's history. Maybe not record wise, but everything else wise.
Dave Trembley=Yard Knome

Dr. Mr. President of Baseball Operations,
Please have mercy on all of us fans. Please make another video apologizing to us and owning up to the plan not working. Phase 2 is the worst phase ever. It is more like putting the nail in the coffin then laying down the hammer with Dave Trembley. When you think it cannot get worse, of course it does. 2-16 wasnt a big enough indication for you? So i guess we are throwing that idea of performance based evaluation and wins and losses mattering out the window no?

What a good club do with Cla after his comments: Sit him down with the field manager and GM, and tell him that if ever wants to pitch in this organization or any other in the future he has to 1.) do a big mea culpa to the press (i.e., I spoke in anger and frustration; I'm sorry; I earned my demotion; my one goal is to pitch well enough to earn my way back and help this club. 2.) be "lights out" at Norfolk.
That's what a good club would do.

Mr Angelos,
Please take "Baltimore" off the road jerseys.
Thanks,
Embarrassed Fan

Time to trade Millwood before he loses any value. I wonder how anyone could have possibly believed this team would be any good this year. Mora for Tejada? Huff for Atkins? Sherrill for ? We were approaching mediocrity a few yrs back until we unloaded a bunch of players in trade or release, and their replacements at this point are not nearly as good as what we have let go. This team, in addition, may go down as the biggest collection of chokers in the history of baseball. The only hope this team has now is to grossly overpay some big free agent bats next year to take the pressure off of everyone. But there may not be enough money to lure anyone here, given the success of Tampa Bay and now Toronto. The Orioles look to be out of playoff contention for at least three more years.

Natural to be disappointed in that situation but I still don't like the attitude. Some things are best expressed in private, not in the papers.

when you refer ence the minor league team which one are you talking about the one with baltimore on the jersey or the one that plays in norfolk?thei

Been an O's fan since the 70's and still watch every game on MLB season pass even though I live in Utah now. I would request that McPhail refund my money from watching the worst O's team ever. The 88 O's showed way more heart and at least looked like they were trying. Watching this team is like seeing a bad accident. You don't want to look but for some reason still do. I don't watch the games planning on O's victories. I watch to see how they can figure out how to get worse. What sucks even worse is when I look into the minors I don't see anything promising other than Jake Arietta. But it makes way more sense to keep duds like Scott Moore, Alberto Gonzalez, Matt Albers, Julio Lugo. Why the hell is Caesar Itzuris still major leaguer. Shame on you O's, Trembley has lost any and all creditbiliy as a manager. I want my money back!!!!!
Posted by: Randy Mckim | May 30, 2010 4:06 PM
Ah,Gary, the O's have no control over where Meredith pitches next. That would be collusion. He should have bit his tongue and took a deep breath, but speaking the truth is refreshing. You don't get to hear it ever, in baseball. On another subject, what in the world has happened to Mickolio? He can't get anybody out. How do guys stay on the 40 man with such terrible era's, Mickolio 9.64 Viola 17.?? How about getting the rosters straight and start moving guys who deserve it, and those that don't.

In 1971, I was 9 years old, and we lived in Japan (My dad was in the Navy). For my birthday, my dad took me to see the Baltimore Orioles play the Tokyo Giants.
That kicked off my career as an Orioles fan. Every year, I'd wait for the Strat-o-Matic cards to replay the season, and watched as the O's rich farm system brought up quality players and pitchers fundamentally schooled in the "Oriole Way".
I lost a month's worth of lunch money on bets when the O's blew a 3-1 series lead to the Pirates in '79. In '83, I was in Air Force basic training and did not get to see an inning of the World Series, which was minor torture.
I'm currently in San Diego, CA, watching the amazing resurgence of the San Diego Padres, built on pitching and defense. The Padres have less resources than the Orioles, yet they are flashing signs of a bright future with a quiver of quality young arms.
I manage to see about 140 Orioles games per year on Extra Innings and MLB.tv, (and my new favorite way, MLB2010 on the iPad).
This year has been a disaster since Mike Gonzalez took the mound on opening day. Not only is the team uninspired and lethargic, they commit the insufferable sin of being horrible AND boring.
At the current pace, the O's will finish 48-114. That is beyond horrible, and anyone associated with the organization that is not embarrassed, damn well should be.
This is my first post ever in the forums, even though I read them most every day.
I'm about to make my first trip ever to Baltimore, to participate in the 1970 reunion activities, attend the luncheon and a few games on wed. thurs, and friday leading up to the reunion game.
Hope to meet and commiserate over adult beverages with some of the long time Oriole fans. What are the recommended pubs or establishments to visit prior to games?
Cheers,
Ridgway

Hey Cla...one thing you CAN control is not giving up bombs. Shut up, do your job effectively & you won't have to worry about the other things in baseball...like being shipped down.
