Minor league game recaps -- May 4

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides topped the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees this afternoon, while the Double-A Bowie Baysox blanked the Harrisburg Senators.

The Single-A Frederick Keys edged the Winston-Salem Dash, and the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds lost to the Savannah Sand Gnats.

Earlier today, Keys catcher Wally Crancer was added to the voluntary retired list and relief pitcher Brett Bordes replaced him on the roster.

Crancer was batting .225 with five RBIs in 12 games for Frederick this season. Last year, the 25-year-old catcher hit .302 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs in 64 games for the Keys.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Norfolk Tides 12, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 4 (Box score)

Recap: Shortstop Robert Andino had two home runs and four RBIs as the Tides cruised to a 12-4 victory over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at Harbor Park.

Norfolk designated hitter Josh Bell and third baseman Scott Moore each collected a home run and two RBIs, while second baseman Blake Davis added two RBIs.

Tides starting pitcher Jake Arrieta (3-1) earned the win, but it was far from a dominating performance. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed two runs, two hits, five walks and a hit batter in five innings. Arrieta struck out three batters, throwing 49 of his 92 pitches for strikes.

Six Tides players had at least two hits, led by Michael Aubrey, who was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Relief pitcher Jim Johnson gave up on hit in one scoreless inning for Norfolk.

Bowie Baysox (AA)

Score: Bowie Baysox 9, Harrisburg Senators 0 (Box score)

Recap: Starting pitcher Zach Britton (2-2) held Harrisburg to two hits in five scoreless innings before leaving after being hit by a comebacker as the Baysox coasted to a 9-0 win.

The 22-year-old left-hander picked up two strikeouts before being removed from the game for precautionary reasons. He is expected to make his next start for the Baysox.

Bowie first baseman Joel Guzman was 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored, and catcher Phil Britton added three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI.

Baysox left fielder Tyler Henson hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning, and shortstop Pedro Florimon contributed two hits and two RBIs.

Frederick Keys (A)

Score: Frederick Keys 7, Winston-Salem Dash 6 (Box score)

Recap: Designated hitter Billy Rowell was 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in the Keys' 7-6 win over Winston-Salem at Harry Grove Stadium.

Frederick shortstop Greg Miclat added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while left fielder Kyle Hudson was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

Keys starting pitcher Kenny Moreland didn't factor in the decision after giving up six runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings, while relief pitcher John Mariotti (2-1) held the Dash scoreless for 2 1/3 frames.

Brandon Cooney picked up his fourth save of the season for Frederick after tossing one scoreless inning.

Delmarva Shorebirds (A)

Score: Savannah Sand Gnats 12, Delmarva Shorebirds 4 (Box score)

Recap: Starting pitcher Tony Butler (1-2) was rocked for eight runs, six hits and three walks in two innings as the Shorebirds were routed, 12-4, by Savannah at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Delmarva left fielder Michael Planeta was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and center fielder Steve Bumbry had an RBI and a run scored.

Shorebirds catcher Michael Ohlman added an RBI.

Dean,

I notice Brandon Snyder, who is hitting 198, came out of the game after one AB. Any word on why? How concerned is the team that he is just not hitting at the AAA level? Is Andino being considered to replace Lugo or even Izturis on the big club?

Also, I haven't heard much about Mike Flacco, has he been assigned or is he still in camp waiting for Aberdeen to start?

Thanks.

With Izturis and Lugo being FAs after 2010 and the lack of FA alternatives after this year, Andino has a chance to be the starting SS next year in Bal if his hitting and fielding come together during the summer. Good luck Robert!
