Corey Patterson update
The former Orioles outfielder will be a current Orioles outfielder at some point today. If there are no flight delays from Syracuse, he'll be at Camden Yards well before game time.
It's still possible that the club holds off activating him until Thursday. But since he'll be in Baltimore, it's more likely he'll be in uniform for tonight's game.
No official word on who goes when Patterson arrives, but given Nolan Reimold's struggles and his status within the organization, it makes the most sense for him to go to Triple-A Norfolk and play every day. That would leave Lou Montanez as the O's fourth outfielder, unless more changes are made.
Again, just speculation on our part at this point in regards to the demotions.

Comments
Are you picking him up at the airport? Did he have peanuts or pretzels on his flight? It's freakin' Corey Patterson, dude. Don't need the minute-by-minute updates on him. Thanks though. Maybe you can update us on whether Craig Tatum uses whole or skim milk on his cereal.

Luke Scott should be dropped rather than wait for his bat to come around in a consistent fashion. We have too many outfielders already. He no longer serves a purpose on this team, sorry to say.
Drop Luke. Input Reimold as regular DH. Send down Lou. Bring up Patterson. That should help a little bit.
As far as pitching, I think it's time to send Hernandez down or shift him to the bullpen and bring up Tillman.
Further thinking... Maybe try to get something for Hernandez and Scott?

I am speechless as to why Montanez is more deserving of a roster spot than Reimold. Reimold hasn't been great, but he is a much, much better hitter than Montanez.
...............................................................................................
Jeff Z's reply: I don't think it's really about who is more deserving right now, Steve. Reimold is an important part of the team's future, and the Orioles need to get him right, and that's not happening right now up here.

its about time even though montanez looks lost at the plate and in the field . Corey cant be seen as a savior because he isnt .
Posted by: jon morris | May 12, 2010 10:16 AM
I'm not sure if I understand why you would send Reimold down to AAA. Over the past 7 days, he has the second highest BA on the team. Why send down somebody that is actually starting to hit better? I don't doubt there is something wrong with him in the field currently, but don't send him down to AAA because of that, DH him instead.
Posted by: Joe | May 12, 2010 10:39 AM
Why not send Hernandez down today and send an OF down before Hernandez's next time in the rotation?
Posted by: Evan | May 12, 2010 10:45 AM
Personally, I think Jones is the one who looks completely lost and would like to see him sent down. But if the choice is between Reimold sitting on the O's bench or playing everyday in Norfolk, I'd rather he play every day down there until he's moved on from the injury and has his timing back. I'm actually not particularly worried about him; at least there's a plausible explanation for his slow start. What's Jones's excuse?

The only savior for this org is Cal Ripken, but the owners doesn’t want him to get any credit for when the club is turned around (if ever). Rosenthal stands by his story & I believe him.
All we can do as fans is to stop going to the Yard & purchasing Oriole merchandise. Let’s stop lining this jerks pockets. He's embarrassed the fans & our city enough. He's out casted our heroes & put statues of Yankees (Ruth) outside the stadium. Where are the orgs winners like Cal, Frank & Brooks? Angelos is more interested in creating a baseball experience for ALL fans rather than giving the home team something to be proud of. He runs the team like an amusement park trying to attract all customers rather than marketing towards his niche market (which is a goldmine). I’m done & you should be also. Sadly a boycott probably doesn’t even matter b/c Angelos is guaranteed a certain profit margin by MLB as part of the Nationals deal. The guy is bulletproof & we are probably stuck with him & his version of the American baseball experience. RIP Oriole Way

@Daniel: What the hell are you going to get for Hernandez and Scott? Some grass seed? some equipment maybe? News Flash: teams aren't going to trade for the worst team in baseball's worst players.

Its sad when the big news is about Corey Patterson.
Send Jones down. Leave him for the entire season. Needs to learn the strike zone. Set goals. Perhaps 40 walks by season end. Make him, do not ask him to play deeper in center and by the way have him play in left too because Pie is a better natural CF. Oh, and put him on a 12 step program to break his bubble gum addiction.
Needs to be humbled while being reconstructed as a ballplayer.
He will not recover in the "bigs"

Nolan Reimold Bobblehead night is 5/26. Will he be here to see it?
Posted by: butch | May 12, 2010 11:27 AM
People need to take a step back and stop assuming success in one field leads to success in others.
Cal Ripken had a great career as a BASEBALL PLAYER. He has never run an organization (scout, GM, etc.). It is NOT a given that he would be successful.
Maybe people here are forgetful or too young but at one time too many people HAD to have LOCAL ownership and thought Angelos was the perfect choice.
Hmmm. That hasn't worked has it?

I would love to see Patterson occasionally spell Jones in centerfield over the next few weeks. As bad as Reimold has looked at the plate, Jones's start is even more disappointing because he didn't lose an entire offseason to Achilles surgery. His pitch recognition is gag-worthy. And judging by his comments during Spring Training regarding the team's desire to have him play deeper in the outfield - "We're trying it out right now, but I don't think I'm gonna do it" - last year's largely undeserved All-Star nod and COMPLETELY undeserved Gold Glove award seem to have gone straight to his head. He needs to get benched to get his head straight.

Why would the Orioles consider waiting till Thursday to activate Patterson? Why is that even an option?
Patterson's hitting and might be able to jump start the offense right now, so what would be the point of delaying the call up? That just doesn't make sense, unless there's some other considerations I don't know about that go into the decision.
...............................................................................................
Jeff Z's reply: Perhaps because they are facing another left-handed pitcher today, but it will be a moot point. I expect Patterson to be activated in time to play tonight.

Daniel...try and get something for Scott???? What are you hungry?? I'll give you a ham sandwich for him. You should take that deal! You are getting the better end it. I predicted at the begining of the year he would finish with 25 homers and 30 RBI's. He is the most pathetic clutch hitter i have EVER Seen. Yes he will carry us for a week. But so did Leo Gomez. Enough Said.
The birds really need to shake things up right now. I don't think Corey Patterson is the answer. But its worth a try. We are out of the Rays, Sox and Stankies part of the schedule and need to split and wind some series.
Posted by: samdougherty | May 12, 2010 11:58 AM
We need firstbaseman! WE have ZERO homers from that position! We should get ALEX GORDON IN A TRADE from KC right now ! We send MONTANEZ DOWN NOT REIMOLD !
Posted by: FritzJerries | May 12, 2010 12:04 PM
Of course there are, Ken. There are always other considerations.
One reason for the delay is that the M's will start another lefty tonight, and they want to wait until Thursday when Seattle starts Felix. Tonight the O's get Ryan Rowland-Smith, who is winless with a six plus ERA. So another chance for Reimold and Jones to work on some things.
I agree that Jones should be the one sent down. His upside is greater than any of the other current Orioles. Getting him straightened out is imperative. Sending him down sends the message that no one is safe.
Someone suggested trying to package Scott and Hernandez for something, right now, their value couldn't be lower. When Scott gets hot, as he will, he always does, then maybe try to swing something. Hernandez has outstanding stuff and might be better suited to the pen. I'd love for Arrieta, Tillman or Patton to come up and move David to the pen. Then maybe pakage an Albers, who also has outstanding stuff, or a Meredith with Scott and see what they can get.
I am quite sure the front office isn't sitting around doing nothing, one thing GMs always do is talk to each other about their players and possible trade possibilities. Right now, the Orioles are dealing from weakness so even if a trade was being worked on, the probability is that the Orioles won't get equal value.
Potential means something and this Orioles team is loaded with potential. The question all of us have is, how long do you wait?
Posted by: ken | May 12, 2010 12:12 PM
As a fan in NC, I am not able to see very many Orioles games, but I do read the boxscores and follow them on the internet as best I can. What I can't figure out is how Terry Crowley has survived given that this team just cannot hit with anything resembling consistancy. I loved Crowley when I was a youngin in the early 1970's, but this is as clear an area as any for a change immediately.
Posted by: Lou | May 12, 2010 12:13 PM
I have watched the O's since 1954. This is the most feeble offense I've ever seen. They take strikes and swing at balls. They look like they don't like one another. The manager don't attempt to back them up when umpires calls are obviously wrong. I'm sorry to say this but all field management must go. You can't fire the players( although I would). Lets get a look at our farm. Can't do much worse!!!
Posted by: Mike Kingsville | May 12, 2010 12:15 PM
Scott is so inconsistent that I am amazed there are not more people asking for a trade. As for Jones...only in Baltimore would people denigrate and complain about a young man who was allstar and golden glove...umm. I still believe that Crawley should go. Although he does do the hitting, he obviously is not getting through to the players. The team has changed everyone, but him over these losing years. Whats the deal? In Baltimore, some people get a "pass" and others get grief. Speaking of Corey Patterson--why was he let go. Is there a pattern?
Posted by: emjay | May 12, 2010 12:23 PM
Did anyone consider using Felix Pie as the
DH instead of putting him on the 60-day DL? If his problem is only throwing, why'
not let him bat 4 times a game, at least
against RHPs? Perhaps this will be an option whenever the 60 days are up.
...............................................................................................
Jeff Z's reply: He had a muscle tear off a bone in his back. Swinging a bat wasn't going to happen.

Nothing more idiotic than reading comments from people who think Adams Jones' bubble gum has any significance at all...
Posted by: Keith | May 12, 2010 12:37 PM
We shouldn't get too excited about Corey Patterson. He has as much of a chance of jump starting this offense as this team does in winning 70 games. However, he may represent an improvement over what we currently have.
Posted by: Charles | May 12, 2010 12:38 PM
Lets remember that our problems hitting are nothing companred to our bullpen. Pitching wins games. Obvioulsy the Os dont know this. Reimold is playing like a teenager and Luke is blindfolded when he bats. But i believe in these guys. Once we finally get back roberts, he leads off; Ty goes to DH, 1st is a joke, hughes or atkins, Issy at SS and Tejada at 3rd. Weither stays at catcher and i see him getting hot. Greek boy, jones and Lou or Reimold at left is a great outfield. Let Luke play backup. Nothing wrong with that. But even if we avg 6 ormore runs a game, well loss 7-6 in the 7 and 8th inning on or bullpen.

I really don't think Patterson is the answer here, however he looks better than most of the members of the big league squad.
I've been an O's fan for some 28 or so years, barely remember the last time they won it all. I understand the reputation that Crowley has but here's my observations and I'll get to the questions after. Markakis had a tough first year in the majors at the plate but came around, who doesn't. Since then he's the example of consistency, which is my issue. His natural ability has allowed him to hit .300/20/100 or close to it every year. Isn't it Crowley's job to get him one step beyond his natural ability? Crowley is responsible for teaching Nick to be better than .300, better than his natural ability and actually teach him new skills to improve his hitting and break out in the league. It also seems to me that Jones has gotten worse at the plate each year he has been in the organization. What are Crowley's real achievments and credentials as a hitting instructor and why should he still be the hitting coach of a team that hasn't performed consistently at the plate in the 12 years he's been in the job

Cal is not a Magic Johnson or Nolan Ryan, people that have spent their lives (Nolan even during his career as a Bank owner) after their on-filed/court days all about running various businesses. The only operation Cal has ever run is his own. Further, there has never even been a whisper about him actively putting a group together to make an offer on the team - is that the kind of owner or GM that everyone wants, one that is waiting for someone else to offer to sell before they make a move.
Loved the player, but people are delusional about this whole Cal owner or front office thing -- what has he ever accomplished to make you think that is a position that he would excel in? He changed his batting stance every third day for Pete's sake.

I have been patient with McPhail and Trembley - but if they decide to scapegoat Reimold and send him down I am done with them and both should be canned.
Reimold has been jerked around this year (learned he wouldn't start through the Media - Trembley, learned he might go down - McPhail through the Media and learned about his confidence issues through the Media - Trembley). He was also told to take ground balls at 1B at the end of Spring Training - think he doesn't feel, what I think is totally unnecessary pressure to succeed? He was also jerked around in the MiL (held another full year at Bowie where even National publications such as Baseball America were questioning how the Orioles felt about Reimold since he was clearly ready for a promotion.
Reimold needs to play both in the field and hitting Every day! For the first time this year, he was given consecutive starts - and his average has crept up. Look at his relatively high OBP to his BA and his RBIs compared to other veteran Orioles. Believe me, I love Wieters, but his BA is pretty empty. McPhail's off season is a disaster - Atkins should be released now, Gonzalez - when will he pitch and Tejada - the best move - enough said.

judging by the recent "crowds" the fans have fired peter angelos. maybe he doesn't know it.

@peanutgallery
what are you nolan's mom?
the guy can't even pick up a baseball -- never mind catch one.
Posted by: the Wayward O | May 12, 2010 2:28 PM
Agree with peanutgallery's point that Nolan has been jerked around a little bit this season. And for what? To get another retread Cubs prospect (first Pie, now Patterson) into the lineup? I think Trembley and MacPhail both handled the LF/Nolan situation poorly this season, and now his confidence is shot -- Trembley admitted as much at his news conference the other day. What a debacle.
