« Minor league game recaps -- April 11 | Main | Who should be the Orioles closer now and for the rest of 2010? »

April 11, 2010

Late-inning demise

It’s such a crazy stat that it needs to be highlighted.

The Orioles have allowed a total of 11 runs in the eighth and nine innings of their six games this season.

They have allowed 16 runs in the other seven innings combined in 2010.

There are obvious conclusions to be made from this.

The first one is closer Michael Gonzalez’s implosion, but he is only responsible for four of those runs. So Gonzalez aside, the Orioles have to do a better job in late-game situations.

If you want a silver lining, it’s that the Orioles’ starters have pitched relatively well so far in this early going.

But am I the only one with the sinking feeling that this could be another season in which one facet of the team does well, while the others suffer? And there never seems be a protracted period when the club runs on all cylinders simultaneously?

If so, that’s the sign of a club that’s not quite ready to be competitive throughout a long season. Not that it's news to you.

You gotta give the Birds a little credit ... they're picking up right where they left off.

Although I think most of us have come to expect that consistency year to year.

Congrats to Mr Angelos on a fine product yet again.

Dan,

We have been rebuilding now for how long? That sinking feeling you're having isn't about the season it's about the realization that you and I and everyone single last O's fan has been fed a shovel fulls of s**t the last 13 years. The Oriole's are doomed unless Angelos spends some money or drops dead, the latter being the more likely scenario. I'm over it. This was my last post on any O's sight and my last game as an O's fan. Philly is only about an hour drive north, I can handle that

Markakis seems like he is in another world in right field almost day dreaming and at bat he doesn't seem to have the determination to belt the ball like he did the other years. Wieters swing just doesn't seem to have the power to it that everyone has expected. Wow! So how do you solve a problem like the O's?

I think we need a total overhaul of this organization. New coaching staff, General manager, new president, NEW OWNER... the works. I'm sick and fed up of Angelos not spending on key talent that could help the birds in the long run. WE HAD OVER $200,000,000 TO SPEND AND NOT ONE DIME WAS SPENT ON ANY SORT OF TOP NAME TALENT

SOMEONE TELL THIS GUY TO STEP DOWN AND TRANSFER ALL BUYING POWER TO SOMEONE ELSE. I WANT TO SEE A CONTENDER! NOT A CONTENDER FOR THE BASEMENT!

You need people that know how to win. There is no one on the coaching staff, starting and ending with DT, that know how to win. Winners don't make excuses when they lose... they don't find the "positives" in a loss... they get mad. Did you hear Tiger today when they asked if he was satisfied with his performance given that he had been away so long? He said "No. I only enter tournaments to win and that didn't happen". He didn't say he was working his way back and this was a good start. He didn't say he was getting more consistent, or any other crap. He just said he didn't win and that's all he wants to do. The Orioles need that same mentality.

it's been 5 games.

I agree with David. Every loss seems to come with this magical silver lining. Anybody know where I can get some of that, I'm thinking about redoing the inside of my car. You hear the same stuff day in and day out. Every loss has some positives. In New York and Boston, there's only winning and losing. If they lose, they don't search for the positives they just get pissed and move on to the next game.

My 6 year old son is bored by baseball. He loves the Ravens though. I asked him if there's anything that could happen that would interest him in baseball more. He asked, "could the Ravens play baseball"?

To all the Joshua's of the world. You can have 2 Billion to spend, but you can't force a player to come here. Why would anyone in their right mind want to play here instead of the Yankee's, Mets, Red Sox, Angels, Dodgers...etc. And yes we can grossly overspend for a player just to lure him away. But you'll be the first one to bitch when that guy gets hurt and your still paying him 5 years from now (see Albert Belle). Teams like the Yankees can give outragous contracts to the Carl Pavano's of the world and just laugh it off. Teams like the O's can't. Teams like us are just farm teams for the one's with money. We can develope a great player, but as soon as he's eligible for that first big contract..Adios.
