Guthrie does his job
Jeremy Guthrie got beat up plenty last year – by fans, media and, most often, himself for pitching below his capabilities.
And he didn’t exactly have a stunning spring.
But, if his first start of this season is any indication, perhaps Guthrie’s 2010 will look more like his solid 2007 and 2008 campaigns.
Guthrie’s line was solid but not spectacular: He allowed eight hits, two walks and three runs in 6 1/3 innings against the Rays – good enough to register as a quality start.
He threw 95 pitches, 59 for strikes. And he struck out six.
He had to battle out of several jams, including a bases-loaded one in the fourth by fanning catcher Kelly Shoppach.
Guthrie was mixing a 94-mph fastball with a 85-mph changeup and he had excellent movement on all his pitches. He really looked like the old Jeremy at times.
Both he and the Orioles have to be encouraged by the way Guthrie threw in his season debut.

no matter what happens, teams always always ALWAYS have someone better than our best. i.e. evan longoria. and he's not even some expensive free agent or anything.
just so frustrating. it never ever changes.

Keep pouring that Kool-Aid....mmmmm..
Same old Guthrie....if we were to score six, he would give up seven....he pitches just well enough to lose...
Let's see....15 games in April against the AL East....oops, make that 13 as we are now 0-2 and having to depend on the rookie to prevent an opening series sweep.....I see 3-12 coming and DT making an exit stage left come June...

So typical.
The Orioles, losers of 98 games last year, just played to hard fought games against one of the best teams in baseball, granted they lost, but they were hardly over matched.
Much maligned Kevin Millwood pitched a solid game.
Much maligned Jeremy Guthrie pitched a solid game.
Evan Longoria's not an expensive free agent because he is signed to an expensive contract and he is going to hit his HRs against anybody. Same old Guthrie is what we would love to have, the guy that pitched to mid three ERAs for two years before having an off year last year.
If not for a bad inning by the new closer, this team would have split the first two games.
Whether you naysayers like it or not, there is a hell of a lot to build on after the first two games, and perhaps the best rookie in baseball takes the mound tomorrow.
Buck up, things aren't as dire as y'all make them out to be, or seem to want them to be.

The bar is so low...a 4+ E.R.A. and a measly 6 and 1/3 innings is now a quality start?
Pathetic. I remember when men were men, and pitchers were still men!

So typical.
So used to Orioles losing that you continue just to see the "positives" as the losses go on and on.
There are no style points in baseball.
A loss is a loss is a loss...no matter how "solid".....and no matter all the "ifs" or "shoulda, woulda , coulda" you apologists come up with.
This year is to be measured by wins and losses according to the man with a "plan".

Wish I could say the 1st 2 games have given me increased hope for a decent season. They haven't. The losses look far far far too familiar to the many losses we've rolled up over the past 10 years or so. We still see mediocre starters who lose their stuff after 4-5 innings, a bull pen incapable of protecting a lead, and hitters who can't deliver in the clutch. Nothing new there. Plus, looks to me like BRob should have had surgery to repair his herniated disk. Injections can help in the treatment of bulging disks, but really do nothing to help heal herniated disks. They simply help to mask the pain. The writing is on the wall. BRob won't be the same this year, and the team will again lose 95+ games. The season is over. We might as well turn our attention to this year's draft and next season. Arrgh! Let's not blame this on DT. Face it, he really doesn't have the talent yet to be relevant in the AL East. Looks to me like we're doomed to finish last AGAIN!. You simply can't blow games on the road like we did on Monday and expect to have a good season. Thanks Gonzo for blowing the opener. Gee wonder why the Pirates with their 17 consecutive years of losing baseball let you go. Could it have been because even they couldn't put up with your inconsistency? You're definitely not a closer.

Why don`t you people give the season at least 2 weeks before spewing your constant whining and venom about the team.
I can guarantee that if the Orioles weren`t in the hardest division in the league they could compete for at least a .500 record or better this year.
This division is very unforgiving and it is going to take time for McPhail`s plan to take hold.
This organization was a real train wreck back when yes men like Syd Thrift were making the decisions.
So lighten up a bit and lets see how the kids do.
