Girardi frustrated that Guthrie keeps hitting Yankees
By now, you probably know that New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi was pretty critical of Orioles starter Jeremy Guthrie, who beaned catcher Jorge Posada in the right knee in the second inning.
Girardi acknowledged that he didn't think Guthrie hit Posada on purpose, but that didn't make it any easier to accept.
“"I don’t think he’s doing it on purpose, but he hits a lot of people,” said Girardi. “That’s frustrating for us. We know he’s going to pitch inside and I don’t have a problem pitching inside. What do you expect, me to be happy that our guys are getting plunked? I’m frustrated by it. I wish he had better command in there."
Actually, Guthrie doesn't hit a lot of guys, but he does hit a lot of Yankees. Guthrie hit nine batters in 200 innings last season, but five of them were Yankees. He hit seven batters in 2008 in 190 2/3 innings and three of those were also Yankees. That means that eight of the 16 batters he’s hit over the past two seasons wear Yankee uniforms.
Those numbers also don't include the one game this spring where Guthrie plunked both Mark Teixeira and Francisco Cervelli, prompting Girardi to yell at the Oriole pitcher from the dugout.
Asked about Girardi's "I wish he had better command in there" comment, Guthrie said, "I wish I had better command. If I did, I think I would pitch much, much better and we’d all see better results. … The inability to command every single pitch, I’m frustrated by it as well. It’s part of the game. Like I said, I’m apologetic for the fact that if he were to miss some time, that would be a shame that it was a pitch that got away from me that had that result. But ultimately, I’m going out there and trying to compete. I don’t ever want to give up free base runners because I can’t afford those as we’ve seen throughout my career.”

Girardi's is the perfect manager for a team full of scum bag's like A-Roid and Andy P.E.D.it.
Hitting more Spankees is a function of them leaning over the plate more than any other team...DUH!!! they try to manipulate every facet of the game. this is way you should just keep your money till the game levels the playing field.

Girardi has the biggest liar, wuss, and bush league player on his team (Alex Rodriguez). Go cry on someone else's shoulder.

Jeremy Guthrie is frustrated that Yankees keep getting in the way of his pitches.

Stop whining! You already said you know he pitches inside. So get out of the way. Obviously the Skankees are taught to crowd the plate. This is the result of that, well that and crappy control.
Posted by: Quizicat | April 29, 2010 3:14 AM
It's a serious problem that Guthrie doesn't have consistent control. But every cloud does have its silver lining.

I knew there was always something I liked about Guthrie.
Posted by: Rick S. | April 29, 2010 7:24 AM
My exact thoughts were well expressed by Gary Thorn blogger. They do try to control every facet of the game. They have a tendency to crowd the plate. Sometimes I think they try to get plunked just so they can get on base. They play so dirty!
I still want to hear Giraldi apologize for Hughes hitting Wiggy in the rib cage. That is far more dangerous than the knee.
Posted by: Tessie | April 29, 2010 7:42 AM
Just keep hitting them. LOL
Posted by: Jeff in Ga | April 29, 2010 7:51 AM
Really Girardi? You wish he had more control of his pitches? Don't think he, the pitching coach, the manager, the GM, the owner, and the fans wish that too.....go cry in someone else's beer!
Posted by: rebecca w. | April 29, 2010 8:05 AM
Girardi is a cry baby. Just like most of the guys on that team. If everything doesn't work out perfectly for them, they complain. Please stop whining! Guys get hit with pitches and miss games all the time. It is also a fact that many of the Yankee batters basically stand on home plate. If they don't want to get hit, back up a little; otherwise, deal with it!
Posted by: Ben | April 29, 2010 8:10 AM
Girardi had no problem when Tex unnecessarily laid out the Angels catcher last week. In fact, "it's part of the game," is what he said. Plus, you won't get sympathy from fans when your team employed one of the biggest jerks ever to walk the mound, Roger Clemmens.

Oriole's need to quit crying and start playing better. Posada doesn't "hang over" the plate and it was the back of his knee. As for O's hitters complaining that because Roberts is out they are hitting out of order??? Just hit the d#$m ball! I want to root for the O's. Bought a ball cap and came to a game a couple weeks ago but your making it real tough to!

Funny,,,Girardi is basically saying what we all know...Guthrie stinks
Posted by: Cereal Blogger | April 29, 2010 8:55 AM
Posada had just stepped out of the box in the middle of Guthrie's wind-up on the previous pitch. He was inexplicably granted the time-out and Guthrie had to stop in the middle of his delivery. When that happened, I thought to myself, "I'd plunk Posada for that." And then he plunked him. Right on, Guthrie.
Go cry about it, Girardi, but your boys play too many games up there at the plate. Tell them to stop their silly primping and maybe they won't get plunked so often.
Posted by: Adam | April 29, 2010 8:58 AM
I agree, the only reason that Yankees get hit more is due to their crowding the plate. Guthrie is just a pitcher that is going to pitch the same way no matter where the batter is.
Every one knows that Jeter gets hit a ridiculous amount because of him crowding the plate. Maybe he's convinced the rest of the guys to follow suit over the years.
Posted by: r3volution11 | April 29, 2010 9:03 AM
SHADDAP Girardi you no-class idiot. I hope Guthrie hits 10 batters next time out. Be a man and stop whining about a common part of the game. No wonder everyone hates you and your team.
Posted by: Groundskeeper | April 29, 2010 9:07 AM
Hey Girardi- tell your guys to stop crowding the plate, and maybe they won't be plunked as much. It's not a coincidence that Guthrie only has a problem hitting Yankees.
I'm sure Girardi would prefer that Guthrie avoid the inside part of the plate as most pitchers do, making it easier to hit him (not that they seem to have any problem hitting him). But luckily, being the veteran that he is, he understands that regardless of where a hitter stands, a pitcher has to attack both sides of the plate. If Girardi doesn't like it, the solution is pretty simple.
Posted by: Ben | April 29, 2010 9:10 AM
That's not 1/2 as frustrating as watching him 'pitch' for your team.
Posted by: drunkrichard | April 29, 2010 9:12 AM
Maybe if the Yankee hitters didn't crowd and dive out over the plate, they wouldn't get hit so often. Instead of blaming someone else, take a look at what your hitters are doing to see if maybe they bear some responsibility in this situation. Derek Jeter is a prime example of this.

Where was Girardi's disdain and anger when he caught Clemens who plunked everybody under the guise of pitching inside.
I know he's just doing his job, but what a hypocritical statement!
Posted by: tristan | April 29, 2010 9:40 AM
The Yankees are riding hight and think that everyone is out to get them. Then they have guys like Teixeira and ARoid that think they can indimated other teams by running over catchers unnecessarily and across the pitchers mound as a short cut to a base.
I think Andy's plan is working and when the Orioles get good again (and it won't be that far off) it is going to be fun to settle some old scores!

Here is to Matusz drilling Texeira or A-Roid in the head tonight.
Posted by: Cam Elto | April 29, 2010 10:00 AM
Girardi should tell his players to stop crowding the plate. He doesn't mind getting a free baserunner, I'll bet.
Frank Robinson was hit by pitch 198 times in his career, and you didn't catch him whining about it.
Posted by: ghankstewart | April 29, 2010 10:03 AM
Hit 'em all. They're Yankees.
I don't care what happens to the scum.
Posted by: Bryan | April 29, 2010 10:15 AM
You can't "bean" somebody in the knee. Only in the head.
Posted by: onetimeterp | April 29, 2010 10:26 AM
Roger, I never did steroids, would brush back people all the time. Then the other yankers would wait on the top dugout step so that if the other pitcher retaliated they could start a fight. Up yours Girardi.
Posted by: rick | April 29, 2010 10:27 AM
My reading of the 'code' produces the following ruling:
"If Girardi hypocritically whines about nothing, then next time, give him something to really whine about..."
You know Clemens would have done that; Guthrie should do the same. Girardi's bitching... that's not baseball.
Posted by: Orsulakfan | April 29, 2010 10:38 AM
I say way to go, Guthrie!!
They are Yankees we're talking about.
Posted by: Cosmos Girl l>--l | April 29, 2010 10:46 AM
I say more power to Guthrie for pitching insided. It is a part of baseball to get plunked every once in awhile. It makes it even better that the people getting plunked are yankees because they like to complain when they don't have a competitive advantage.
Posted by: js67vette | April 29, 2010 11:30 AM
Somebody should introduce Girardi to Joba Chamberlain and A.J. Burnett, who it 12 and 10 batters last year, respectively.
Both more than Guthrie... hmmm.
Also, deal with it Joe. It's part of baseball and your batters hang all over the plate.
Tough.
Posted by: Paul | April 29, 2010 11:41 AM
And of course he is going to hit more Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Rays than say, Mariners because OF THE RIDICULOUS UNBALANCED SCHEDULE THAT ONLY BENEFITS CERTAIN TEAMS.
When you face a team 4 times and others you don't face at all, your odds of hitting a batter probably are higher against the teams you actually face.
Just a guess.

If I were Guthrie, the next time Girardi whines about my pitching, I'd toss a 4 seamer in the Wankees dugout!
Posted by: walt | April 29, 2010 1:21 PM
Someone let me know when Girardi isn't whining about something. Last week it was about balls bouncing off the catwalk in Tampa. Boo hoo hoo!
Posted by: dcb | April 29, 2010 1:24 PM
Hey Girardi,
I'm sure Mike Scioscia didn't like Teixeira taking a cheap shot at his catcher last weekend, but you don't hear him chirping about it.
Posted by: John | April 29, 2010 1:26 PM
It doesn't matter in Baltimore what Girardi says. He can go cry to his own players. If he's got a problem, then handle it on the field. Otherwise don't give any credence to his whining.
Posted by: Not Tom | April 29, 2010 1:58 PM
It amazes me that this is coming from a manager who did not say a darn thing after Mark Teixeira ran over a defenseless Angels catcher last week who was giving him home plate just because he was plunked in the back earlier.
The catcher was making his first big league start and is now out with a concussion.
Class act.
Anyway, no one should be surprised by Joke Girardi's comments. He's a moron who wouldn't know how to manage a team that wasn't stacked with All-Star talent.
Posted by: Paul Again AGAIN | April 29, 2010 2:20 PM
Yankee hitters crowd the plate and Guthrie pitches inside. Sounds like somebody might occasionally get hit by a pitch.
Unintentional, but part of the game.
I think today's hitters take themselves too seriously. When someone hit him,
F. Robby would calmly walk to first base and then wipe out the second baseman on a double-play grounder. Then he'd hit one into the seats his next time up.

Guthrie plunking the yankees isn't near as frustrating as watching Jeremy win 10 games and lose 25!

Bring back Benitez?? Bring back Alan Mills!!
Posted by: rick | April 29, 2010 4:06 PM
It's clear he did hit Posada on purpose for stepping out. What do you expect from a team with nothing to play for. I feel badly for all of you as fans. Especially on a night when the Caps let you down, you need to vent, & what better team to vent against than your defending World Series Champs?
Posted by: BadBrad | April 29, 2010 7:06 PM
Gotta love it
Posted by: Censorship | April 29, 2010 7:22 PM
Didn't Girard ever watch "The Sandlot"?
James Earl Jones took a pitch to the head & went blind. Then he had to deal with kids constantly trying to break into his yard & play with his dog.
And still, you didn't hear him carrying on about it.
Get a real problem, Joe.

I talked about just this topic in my recent blog post seen here - http://curseofdaveyjohnson.blogspot.com/2010/04/typical-ny-yankees-self-aggrandizing.html
Girardi is "upset" and "frustrated" at Guthrie for plunking Posada. Girardi says Guthrie has no "command" and "hits a lot of people."
What a joke.
Typical NY Yankees self-aggrandizement.
CC hit 9 guys in 2009, same as Guthrie. Burnett his 10. Joba hit 12!
Think Joe has a problem with that?
Real tough job managing a $200 million roster full of All-Stars.
