Local athletes to Lem Satterfield: Thanks and get well
In the sports writing business, there is no group of reporters who do more good and get less recognition than the men and women who cover high school sports.
When you cover the “preps,” as its known in some quarters, there are no road trips to glamorous places or comfortable pressbox perches where a public relations or sports information staff provides statistics and quote sheets.
The high school reporters stand on sidelines in the heat and the cold and the wet and keep their own drive charts and play-by-plays and then scurry from one end of the field to the other rounding up players and coaches.
But for the high school athletes and coaches who often play before sparse crowds and whose highlights don't appear on SportsCenter, the recognition that the high school sports reporter provides is enormously appreciated.
The point of all this is that a former Sun colleague, Lem Satterfield, who covered high school sports here and now for DigitalSports is being treated for lymphoblastic lymphoma, a cancer requiring chemotherapy.
In the Wizard of Oz, the wizard tells the tin man who seeks a heart that, “A heart is not judged by how much you love, but how much you are loved by others.” By that measure, we know that Lem has a giant heart because of how much he's appreciated by those young people he covers -- something that's plainly evident in this report and video.
Get well, Lem.

Thanks for posting the video. I covered preps with Lem in the A.A. Co. bureau of The Sun many years ago. More than I can count. He's one of the really good guys in the business, a man with a heart of gold who would do anything for you. The world would be a much better place if there were more people like Lem. And knowing how strong he is, and how stubborn, I have no doubt that he'll pin cancer - yes, I thought I'd work in a little wrestling jargon to honor him - and be back on the sidelines very soon. Take care, bro.

Roch,
Thanks for writing. You describe Lem perfectly.
