Wie cards 9 at Women's Open, already out of contention
There has been so much consistently bad news about Michelle Wie's golf game that you wonder if her performance will ever match her potential or the hype.
Today, she shot a quintuple-bogey 9 on the ninth hole of the first round of the Women's U.S. Open in Edina, Minn., which gave her a 42 on the front nine. She finished with an 8-over 81 on the day and is essentially out of contention.
On the sixth stroke of the 413-yard, Par 4 where her Open fell apart, Wie was chipping from off the green and up a slope when the ball failed to make the ridge at the top and trickled back to her feet.
Personally, I just hate it when that happens on the windmill hole but at least I get a chance for a free game if the last putt goes in the clown's mouth.
As far as Wie is considered, she's been on the golf stage for so long and so prominently that it's sometimes easy to forget that she is still just 18-years-old. She has lots of time to recover from things like this but you do have to wonder about her golfer's psyche.

Comments
There's been a lot of speculation that things have been going better for Wie and she might do well at the Open. Unfortunately that looks unlikely. Personally I think her family destroyed her although obviously she is set financially for life.
I did find one of her comments entertaining. She said sometimes her friends kid her "Lucky you are going to Stanford, at least you can get a real job when you graduate".
Kind of sad to see all that talent go down the drain. Who were people kidding thinking she could compete on the PGA tour as a teenager?

Michelle Wie is still very young, but she's been scuffling for a couple of years now – another way to look at it is that she's now been bad for as long as she previously was good – and where she used to play her best in big events, now she seems to post her biggest scores in the big events. If she's serious about her career, I believe she needs to achieve some separation from her overbearing father, do whatever she needs to do to regain her physical health as much as possible and then devote herself to practice.
She also needs to swallow hard, sign up for Q-School on the LPGA, LET and Japan LPGA Tours, and do whatever it takes to get out there and play regularly somewhere. Before her blow-up Thursday, she had put together a couple of decent tournaments, so she can still succeed. But if she doesn't dedicate herself to the game fairly soon, well, then, it's a good thing she got paid so much up front.

Bill. The fact that you devoted one of your blogs to Wie highlights the fascination the media has her. I don't get it, especially since she hasn't don't anything lately in the world of golf and far more deserving women golfers get ignored. For example, Lorena Ochoa is winning tournaments at a rate even greater than Tiger and ask many casully fans who she is and you'll get blank stares.
Yes, Wie is young but is already over-hyped and she probably would have been better served to hone her skills at a lower level before jumping into the LPGA. She can drive the ball a mile, which is probably why the media/fans are drawn to her but as she is showing, you need a complete game to have any hope on tour.

Terry,
I'm written some posts on Ochoa expressing the very point that you made but you're right that there is a media fascination with Wie and it's normal, I think, given that she was a golf prodigy and all the endorsement money involved.

Just way too much hype about this kid -- like the way she can hit the ball a mile (which always calls to mind the story about Johnny Unitas, who was told that QB Dan Pastorini was able to throw a ball from the poolside to a balcony on the 6th floor. To which Unitas responded, "Yeah, but his receiver was on the 3rd floor"). If the media has to go ga-ga over a woman golfer, go nuts on Lorena Ochoa. If the women's game wants Wie to succeed because she's pretty and that would help "sell" the game, then the LPGA should just hire Porn stars to play.

Patrick,
Sorry about the edit but you made your point. Liked the Unitas story.

Bill, Go back and read the rules for putt-putt. Max of 5 shots per hole. :)
Personally, I compare her to a baseball pitcher, that has lots of talent, but has trouble getting the entire pitching concept down for the whole game. Is she any different than a pitcher that was rolling allong and then just collapses in the 4th inning and has no idea of which direction home plate is?

Capt.,
I'm a purist, you keep taking and counting your strokes until you get the ball in Bozo's mouth on No. 18.
