Fans making news -- amusing and tragic
We have here two bits of sports news about the folks who watch the games rather than participate in them.
One is amusing and the other is just sad.
The one that gives a chuckle is about young David Witthoft, who celebrated his 12th birthday on April 23 by finally giving up the Brett Favre jersey he had received as a Christmas present more than four years ago. By "give up" we mean that David, of Ridgefield, Conn., had decided to stop wearing the jersey he had worn every day, with regular washing and mending by his mom. Apparently, the jersey was beginning to get a little small for the youngster but he'll be at Lambeau Field when Favre's jersey is retired on Sept. 8.
The other story is about a women who ran into a man in Nashua, New Hampshire after an argument outside a bar apparently included team loyalties. The teams in question -- the Red Sox and the Yankees.
The woman -- Ivonne Hernandez who is a Yankees fan -- drove her car, which had a Yankees' sticker, toward a group that was chanting an anti-Yankees taunt. The car struck Matthew Beaudoin, 29, who died of head injuries. All this happened late last week and Hernandez, 43, was in court yesterday facing charges of reckless second-degree murder and drunken driving.
