Yesterday's game for Arizona pitcher Doug Davis was one of those "putting things in perspective" moments.

Davis was starting his final game before surgery for thyroid cancer.  He is scheduled to have his thyroid removed tomorrow.

The Diamondbacks and Davis won the game, 10-5, over Los Angeles as Davis went six innings, gave up two runs, had seven strikeouts, gave up two walks and singled twice driving in a run.  He is hopeful he'll be back in six weeks.

"It's 97 percent recovery," said Davis, whose mother recovered from thyroid cancer. "I'm a big numbers guy in baseball and that's a big number in my life, too."

When he left the game in Phoenix, it was to a standing ovation and well wishes from some of the Dodgers and all the umpires.

"Pretty heroic really," was how Arizona manager Bob Melvin sumed it up.
