Struggling Maryland now needs strong ACC tourney

Down the home stretch of last night's Maryland-Virginia game, you would have thought it was the Cavaliers whose NCAA tournament life was hanging by a thread rather than the Terrapins'.

Even though Virginia has long been an ACC also-ran (5-11 in the conference after last night, 15-14 overall), the Cavaliers played with purpose on both ends of the court. Their own star, guard Sean Singletary (27 points) took over the game. Meanwhile, Maryland (8-8, 18-13) struggled with foul troubles -- which certainly didn't help on defense -- and seemed to always be a step behind as Virginia took what was a close game and made it a blowout, 91-76.

Where this leaves Maryland is pretty simple. After being nearly a lock for the Big Dance a month ago when they were 6-3 in the ACC, the Terps now have to win at least two in the conference tournament (that's what losing five of seven will do). Now the No. 6 seed, they open with Boston College Thursday and Clemson would be waiting in the wings.

Just goes to show you, that in the ACC pretty much any team in the conference can beat any other team in the conference.

Sure working out that way for Maryland.

If Maryland was to get into the tourney. Do you honesty think they will get past the first round, they way they are playing right now?

Capt.,
Short answer ... nope. There were horrible in the last six, seven minutes last night. But you don't have any shot if you don't get in.

Bill,

Do you think Gary could lose his job? The players are obviously under achieving, and they never seem prepared fully. Vasquez is always out of control, Hayes doent know what a good pass is, there is no consistency with anyone, and a lack of discipline. I love Gary, but ever since the two great years he has been doing nothing with something.

Bobby,
Can't see it ... he has a national championship, that's a lifetime ticket particularly at this stage of his career.
