Van Horn hits NBA lottery for $4.3M

Do not ask me to explain this because I cannot.  But Keith Van Horn -- a basketball player who had a decent career, but who also changed jerseys six times in his last several seasons -- will make a reported $4.3 for essentially getting into beach shape over the next two months.

Van Horn, who ended a nine-season career after the 2005-06 campaign with the Mavericks, was part of the eight-player, draft picks and cash trade that was concocted to move Jason Kidd to Dallas from New Jersey.  Van Horn's role is that he is a throw-in to meet league salary cap requirements.  Luckily for him, when he left the game he failed to file his retirement papers.  That meant he was still eligible to be traded.

So that his inclusion isn't completely a sham, he has to try to get in shape so he can play sometime this season.  An article in a Salt Lake newspaper figured Van Horn will make $75,439 a day over the final 57 days of the regular season,

Nothing against Van Horn. But, the NBA and their so-called salary cap is a JOKE! Fix it or get rid of it. Its current shape is total nonsense!

Some deal, huh. I'll bet I could even stand two months in New Jersey for $3.4 mil. Just kidding, I love the Garden State.

i am generally not one of those people that bemoans anyone who finds a way to legally make gobs of money for making ridiculously invaluable or inane contributions to the world...in fact, i aspire to be one of those people...but this has to be one of the most egregious examples of the stereotypical, self-absorbed american society in recent memory.

is there not something better to be done with $4.3M?

Jack,
If you think about this stuff too much, you'll make yourself depressed.
