Dueling evidence in Clemens case

If it hasn't happened already, the public's eyes will be glazing over from the layers of evidence -- so far, all of it circumstantial -- that is said to either prove or disprove Roger Clemens' involvement with performance enhancement drugs.

Last week, Brian McNamee's lawyers -- McNamee is Clemens' former personal trainer who claimed he injected Clemens with PEDs in 1998, 2000 and 2001 -- said McNamee turned over syringes and swabs allegedly containing Clemen's blood that links him to the PEDs.  Of course, that evidence is several years old.

Now Clemens' lawyers say they have "proof" that Clemens was not at a party given by Jose Canseco back in 1998 that McNamee said was the jumping off point for Clemens' use of steroids and human growth hormone.  The party was at Canseco's home.  McNamee said Clemens and Canseco talked and after that was when Clemens approached McNamee about injecting him.

The Clemens' side says it has a videotape of baseball announcers discussing the party and the fact that Clemens did NOT attend.  If true, this might impugn McNamee's accounts of what happened.  Reportedly, Canseco said Clemens didn't attend. Clemens' lawyers contend the pitcher has receipts that indicate he played golf that day.  Another former player who was at the party, Darrin Fletcher, doesn't recall Clemens being there but candidly admits that, hey, it was 1998 -- nearly 10 years ago.

Meanwhile, McNamee's lawyers are suggesting that the Justice Department will investigate Clemens regardless of what happens at Wednesday's congressional hearings. Which brings us to the spotlight moment here: In two days, the principals in this saga testify in front of Congress.

If they could figure a way to put this thing in prime time, we'd probably be talking Super Bowl ratings.
